2014-2015 Brown University Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Rejected today via e-mail, complete 07/03. A little down because I really liked this school and thought I would fit... 🙁 I saw this e-mail and thought it was an II so I squealed before my face fell as I recognized the verbiage to be the format of a rejection, lol

Good luck to those still in the running! Especially to my pals @BengaliBrat and @sunflower18!!

did these rejections come out all at once this afternoon? or have they been sending them in waves throughout the day?

I guess us late August, early-mid September completed people are next on the chopping block.

Does anyone have any idea what the turnover rate has been? I was complete 9/4 and I've begun to have an unhealthy relationship with the refresh button on my email... Not sure how I'll manage another few weeks of that. I'ma gonna loooooose my mind!

Rejected. Completed sometime in early Aug. Good LizzyM score. OOS. I saw this coming though, my profile made me looks like that I am super heavily leaned towards research, which might concerns Brown for my fit with the school. Enjoy Brown those lucky few!

Complete 7/30. It says my app is no longer being considered on the portal. 🙁

Really? I feel like Brown emphasizes research. At least on their admissions pamphlet, I felt like they really preached global health and research (i.e. "90% of our students conduct research blah blah blah publications blah blah blah") along with community service, etc.

In any case, I'm very sorry about the bad news. I expect to be on the chopping block next!

Brown emphasised teaching above all else during my interview day. They said they really want to train clinician educators, and that all of the interviewees on my day were selected due to teaching experiences being prominent on our applications. They also talked a lot about research and art opportunities.

*Sigh* Thank you for letting us know, but I guess this means I'm out haha.

Sorry to hear that 🙁 I was rejected too today. I think fit was my issue too, my friend. I don't have enough "community service" and I emphasized teaching more in the supplementary essays than in my primary application 🙁 The most I've engaged in non clinical volunteering/leadership was a topic I am passionate about and that's what is important: helping organize fundraisers for my religious community. We raised 100,000 dollars two times that we used for different community projects. But that's probably not enough for schools like Brown and U of Chicago, which I also hear is service-heavy.

Aw dang, well at least I have some idea why they rejected me, lol. Good luck to all still in the running at this school 🙂

That's so interesting, because I certainly wouldn't describe my app as service heavy... Hopefully they don't waitlist me because of that!!

I thought they emphasized art and education. Or at least I hope so, lest my dreams of going to Brown are crushed

Definitely agree, which is why I think I got an interview. It's a very unique focus and I love that! Gah, I'm getting so nervous to hear back now.... This is definitely one of my top choices

Yeah, I feel like the school is ABSURDLY tailored to me as a person. They even have an elective that combines medicine and theater. I heard angels singing when I saw that

I PM'd you 🙂

this is really interesting what you all are saying...i know someone who is there and was hard core biology and science research applicant. i don't think they had any art or theatre on their app
i guess there are certain niches to be filled at every school

The reason why I think that there is a more prominent art focus is because RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) is right next to Brown. There are a lot of collaboration opportunities, since RISD is a world-class institute. I don't do visual art, but I think the association between the schools lends to a creative culture at Brown. They also told me about students who received summer stipends to spend time with patients and then write poetry based on their experiences, or to write short stories/poems after reading old medical charts. I thought that was ridiculously cool, as writing is my art form of choice 🙂

But perhaps art isn't any more focused-upon at Brown than at any other school, and I just happened to hone in on what opportunities do exist during my visit. It definitely does take all kinds to fill a class! The only thing I know for certain is that the director of admissions specifically told us that we were all selected due to our involvement with teaching, so that's surely more of a focus than art is.

This is very interesting. I'm sure they aren't looking for just one type of student...or at least I hope not, given their emphasis on diversity. But if all of the art and teaching information is true, then I'm just going to expect a rejection soon. I have quite a bit of writing on my application, but it's not creative writing. I have no teaching experience what so ever. 🙁

Truly sorry to hear that so many worthies have been turned away. It just doesn't get easier. . .maybe the opposite.

You are so kind! Brown doesn't know what it's missing by not welcoming you. I'm glad this news was balanced by Iowa-grown love!

Have people sent in updates here? If so, just to the admissions email? Thanks!

I sent in an update a month ago via e-mail, just to their admissions e-mail. Good luck! :luck:

Just a hypothesis that may be totally incorrect because I am no adcom and certainly not at Brown! 😉 I will say that I should have emphasized art and teaching more in my primary app than I actually did. I mostly stuck to a focus on cancer, which helped me (Hi there, Cornell!) and in other cases hurt me (eg. in all my interviews, the interviewees are surprised to see I have such an artistic background when I show them my portfolio, Brown rejection) I think in my quest to display too many things at once, I diluted some really interesting aspects of my persona and only could include small chunks of information. Oh well, I hope it all works out in the end 🙂

@sunflower18 you delivered your application perfectly!!! I wish you had a shadow-twin who could have been my premedical advisor 😉 😀

Aww shucks you flatter me 😳 And yes, the Iowa acceptance totally made up  Ultimately, it's all about The Fit, I keep telling myself, and if I misrepresented myself in my application thereby making The Fit less obvious, then what's done is done and as some of my best friends say, "Khalas". 😀

Good luck to all those lucky enough to be considered by Brown!!! Especially you, @sunflower18 and @BengaliBrat!

Having research experience is probably prefered by almost all med schools. But I'd assume that brown wants it to be balanced by other things. Both Researchismymiddlename and I have quite unusual amount of years of research, she's a research superstar with a phD. and I got 8 years and did several dozens of projects. We are out of the game probably because we weren't as balanced in our experience as many who do. Just a theory though. There could be so many reason why my app did not impress at such a competitive school.

I have absolutely no bad feeling about this result though. I just wished to at least visit the supposedly beautiful campus but I'm sure one day I will.

That's a great point. But with your research experience (dozens of projects? crazy!), Brown is missing out on a great candidate and I am sure you will get love from many other wonderful schools.

Oh, she certainly has impressed some great schools!! Stanford, UPenn, Vandy, Cornell and she just got accepted to Michigan two nights ago! @Friendly_female_house is a SUPERSTAR 😍

Thank you  I knew you said you did a lot of research, but that's incredible!! I only have had three so far. I can't imagine your breadth of experience! Cool!!!

And to tell you the truth, besides Brown's amazingness and the beauty of Providence, I also wanted to see the areas Emma Watson frequented 😳 I know, priorities, priorities, but I am a huge fan.

Ha, I was there while Emma Watson was a student at Brown. She didn't frequent many places because she wasn't on campus much at all!

Getting really nervous about hearing back.... eeek. Anyone else here waiting? @BengaliBrat, you are too, right?
For some reason that I have not been able to fathom, I was given an opportunity to go in person to convince the admissions folks that there are better candidates. I waited a long time to benefit from the bureaucratic error, though. I can't attest to this as fact, but I have heard that Brown (like Dartmouth) is very cautious in the early stages and interviews only a handful of hopefuls. The up side, I'm told, is that a higher proportion of interviewees is accepted than at most schools. Sunflower18, I thought that you were the Interview Empress. Brown is late to the dance?

I meant about acceptance! I interviewed here threeish weeks ago and loved it 🙂

@sunflower18 and @BengaliBrat I'm waiting for the decisions too—Brown broke my heart when I was applying to undergrad, but I couldn't help falling in love with the school all over again 😍 ... As a loyal stalker of both of your app cycles (in a most flattering and not at all creepy way I promise) I have a feeling both of you will be getting some good news tomorrow! ~Sending everyone good vibes/best wishes/loads of luck~

Ahhh wishing you nothing but luck!!! Thank you so much for the nice words!!! I'm taking a red eye tonight, and I land at 10am.... Here's to hoping I'll have good news waiting for me when I land. Except I'd probably scream and everyone waiting to deplane would be alarmed hehe

Love your avatar! You are so nice to compliment this hopeful. . . I don't expect good news from Brown for quite some time, if ever--I don't even interview there until next month! I am looking forward to the visit. I didn't apply to Brown as an undergrad, but I had friends there who LOVED it, and I couldn't resist setting my sights Rhode Island-ward this time. I fantasize about being torn by indecision as my top choices compete for the pleasure of my company. . .sort of like Scarlett O'Hara at the outset of *Gone With the Wind*--all those beaux and suitors! Really, though, I'm much more like Prissy, right down to "I don't know nuthin' 'bout birthin' no baby." (Forgive the implicit racism. I see no relationship between character and melanin! Prissy could be a Bengali brat for sure!)

Anyway, I appreciate the good wishes. And if you are a stalker, then I guess that I am one as well. I read these posts as if I'm a gypsy squinting at an outstretched hand, checking every line and speculating about its import! Let's just think of ourselves as comrades!

I forgot to wish you good news! Consider it done. . . hope your Beloved reciprocates!!
