2014-2015 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
oh wow really? why bother waitilisting them at all haha

Got the "are you still interested?" email today as well. Waitlisted since 10/30/14 (man that's a long time now that I think about it...). I could have given them some updates but I decided to keep it short and just said "yes". As David said, "nobody is vaulting themselves to a higher likelihood of an acceptance by sending in additional information."

I've been wait-listed since then as well. Like you I received the interest email and just said "Yes" while leaving out updates. Based on the email it definitely seems like they don't care for updates. And the whole bit about understanding the "applicant mentality of wanting to share your accomplishments and your interest…" seems like a deliberate attempt to pacify those who need to send some kind update. Either way, whatever we brought with us at the time of the interview is what they'll use to measure us up to one another. Good luck to everyone.

For those who replied to their "are you still interested e-mail", did you receive an e-mail acknowledging your response? Or is it pretty much, now just waiting and see if you get chosen?

So I declined my acceptance a little ways back (emailed both ucsd-admissions & Mr. Zeglen) but never received a confirmation message. Is this par for the course at UCSD or should I double check with them to confirm?

With things coming down to the wire, I just want to make sure I'm not going to unwittingly violate traffic rules.

Hope we get another wave of WL action soon!

Anyway know if there's a way to confirm our update letter was received? I just attached mine to the "yes" email.

I called and they said they do not respond to the "Yes" responses

I know that's what the email said but my guess is it will move a lot sooner considering the date to hold multiple acceptances was moved up two weeks and last year the waitlist started moving around 5/15 too. Like they know exactly how many are in their current class and who wants to remain on the waitlist. Did anyone call today to ask?

Last year's UCSD thread was pretty quiet this time of the year. Only one person posted they got off the waitlist at the end of June (6/26). Two people were actually rejected off the waitlist in late May.* I know a significant (probably a majority) number of applicants don't use SDN (thus don't tell us when they get off the waitlist), but man I hope to see some early acceptances here.

**(This is baseless speculation but I have a feeling they'll probably reject you if they absolutely know they won't take you and you already have an acceptance elsewhere - this would be a courtesy to you since you would now be free to make living arrangements without worrying about UCSD calling you when you start orientation haha).

For what it's worth, between 4/30 and now, the FB group decreased by 15...

man even Cornell had waitlist movement... comon sd!!!

I called yesterday and they said no offers have yet been made from the waitlist.

Did they say when they expect it to move? Thanks so much everyone for your insights/speculations. This waiting process is so stressful. Maybe they'll make some calls out today like their email originally said (?)

AH! I'm being bombarded!

lol - Okay, so unfortunately I really have no new news: Currently (as was when I called around a week or two ago), they are at full capacity. I think there may be some students who are (annoyingly) holding onto multiple acceptances, etc. Thus, they are in the process of contacting those students and schools to sort things out. That being said, there is no set date to when offers will start to go out. It depends on traffic, etc. and when spots become available.

Thus, it looks like UCSD it particularly popular this year and/or admissions is getting better and better at picking students who will ultimately matriculate... rats.

Thanks for the info! Thread MVP up here.

It's unfortunate that they are at full capacity still. Medical school application cycles keep getting more and more competitive every year, I guess.

not me personally, but was told that they're still full.

Hmm, if this year will be anything like last year we're going to start seeing people getting released from the waitlist (rejected). They started rejecting people on the 30th last year.

I've been stalking this thread for a while now and it seems like barely anyone gets acceptances from UCSD after the October interview date. Do you any of you know any one getting accepted after being complete in mid-September? I'm a OOS non-URM and my primary application won't be complete until mid-August, but with the secondary screening process, the earliest I can be complete is mid-September. Please let me know how long it took for you guys to get your secondary apps and if being complete by mid-September is really detrimental. SDN seems to get a lot of mixed responses regarding application timing. Some make it sound like being complete after August is like a death sentence and I just want to know the fact.

Thanks everyone.

So what's worse, never getting off the waitlist or waitlist "release"?

It seems that the frequent flyers on this thread are mostly Medical Student (Accepted) peeps.

There's no facts. Earlier is always better but anything is possible. Your question isn't clear. If you can't be done until mid-Sept then you can't be done til mid-Sept!

If you've come for sympathy and comfort, there's limits to what we can say other than to say, don't get mired down in SDN-paranoia. Do the best you can on your app and once you do, just send it into the wind.

Since the consensus is mixed you'll continue to get mixed responses and will just have to make what you have work or make sacrifices. I can tell you that for some schools being early is the difference between light and day. For others it is not so much. I cannot remember them off the top of my head.

UCSD says it doesn't matter when you interview from what I heard. What is said and what happens can be slightly different. It could be that for the individual, ignoring extremes, it does not matter but the ones that get invites early are generally more favored on paper.

I would suggest not banking on any particular school unless you are really strong or have good ties to the region.

It's mixed because there is no cookie-cutter way to compare every applicant and everyone is limited to their own story and how they choose to relay it on SDN. But this wont sink in until this time next year for you. So if you must know:

primary complete: end of august
secondary received: end of september
secondary submitted: end of october (was being anal - I highly suggest this)
interview invite: 6 weeks later

I'm also OOS.

Thanks everyone for your responses. I actually emailed and called the admissions office to get some first-hand responses and they said if they really want you, they will make sure to accept you regardless of when you interview. The email responses were the same as the responses I got over the phone and they were made by different people on the admissions committee, so I'm confident in their answers. I also asked them if they heavily favor in-state applicants and they said that it happens to be that more people from Cali apply here compared to OOS apps, but when it comes to reviewing apps for interview invites, they don't even look where you're from. This school seems to really care about their students and prospective applicants. They are very responsive to any questions you may have. Some schools (especially the top ones) don't even reply to your emails let alone pick up the phone.

so I take it the "release" didn't happen this year? or atleast today?

I was guessing last Friday (5/29) would be the first day based on a straight time comparison (Friday 5/30 last year). But yeah, I'm guessing the axe will start coming down next weekish (it'll be June then).
