2014-2015 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm in the same boat. And the few people I am good friends with who applied all have already been accepted. I'm over here like, what did I do wrong?

You did nothing wrong. There are many highly qualified applicants. Maybe your friends just had stellar interviews, who knows. Take heart in the fact that you have not yet been rejected, as is the case with many of my classmates and friends. The torturous wait will soon be over.

Any late January (I interviewed the 29th) interviewees heard back yet?

I'm pretty certain they've sent out those letters, I would just call the office this week and ask them. This two week wait is worse than the first month wait, even with having a back-up school. :/

Did everyone just get the email about choosing your campus by March 13? It says they anticipate mailing the final decision letters within TWO WEEKS!?:boom:

I believe KU-Wichita picked up funds to double their class size! Hopefully will help my chances the next two cycles since I am only applying to this campus.

Could you direct me to a source on this by chance?

Gots it! Dumb question, but how do we answer the "why did you choose blah blah as your number 1"? Should I be honest and say, yo, I own a house, would rather not rent it out or commute 3 hours. OR do we say other things, that are true, too, but not as honest? lol I do want to keep volunteering at Children's Mercy, and get to know KC better, and blah blah

Be honest, owning a house is a huge responsibility and it seems like you've already settled into your city; especially if you have kids or a wife. It's way harder to uproot someone well established than someone who just wants to "volunteer and get to know the city".

FYI Wichita has planned it's own Children's Hospital at Wesley so the whole volunteer angle is shot AND there are plenty of volunteer opportunities at both campuses. IMO your honest reason seems legit. Other things you might note are why you chose your campus based on your career goals. I.E. do you see yourself practicing Rural, Urban, or Community-based medicine.

What's the likelihood of us getting our first choice anyways? I know they told us at our interview day, but aren't most people who matriculate at Wichita and Salina there because it was there first choice?

Idk man I just want to get accepted =/ they could send me to freaking Syria campus at this point and I wouldn't care.

Sounds more like a reallocation than an increase of funds. Wouldn't help your chances of being admitted, but may help you get assigned to Wichita if that was your first choice. Also, it looks like this is intended to take place over the next two years so may or may not affect this year's applicants.

Honestly this sounds like a bad idea to me. No increase in class size, seats moving from KC to Wichita. Not sure the Wichita facility can even accomodate so many more students.

I'm pretty sure in the long term plans they are building a new building in addition to the current med school in Kansas City. I've seen things mentioned in the hospital's news and updates before regarding that.

The money is coming from the Lawrence campus where there is not a medical school campus? Wouldn't that be adding seats to the Wichita campus without taking them away from KC?

I assumed they meant the KC campus but you may be right. Would be ok with me if they increase seats.

The article talks about increasing the class size, not taking seats from KC and relocating them to Wichita. The KS board wants to graduate more doctors, and with only one school having a medical school and only 20 seats in rural KS they want more people to stay in Kansas.

It's more likely they want to add seats, not move them. Otherwise they would have taken money from the hospital program at KC and reallocated to Wichita/Salina. Instead, they took money they were giving to Lawrence and decided to give it to Wichita to accommodate more students.

Even the faculty has said they want to expand the medical school classes. The only way to do that is to expand the facilities in Wichita and Salina.

The senate is doing it.

I never said the campuses asked for it or wanted it. I only said that Kansas is doing it and offered a possible explanation as to why.

Actually, we just got an email stating that the University and the Board of Regents opposes this proposal because they feel that it does not help KU as a whole.
Of course the university wants the med school dean to say he opposes it so it doesn't make the university look weak. Maybe not but I really doubt the dean will act excited even if he really was just to please the KU higher ups.

Does anyone know for sure that the funds will be used, in part, to increase the overall class size, specifically in Wichita and/or Salina? If so, will this increase take effect next cycle? An in-state underdog such as myself could benefit from some extra seats in Wichita.

All Wichita I believe. I could definitely benefit. 3.5 GPA 3.3 sGPA, 27 MCAT

Did you apply, Creed? I thought you were waiting till next year?

Hmmm.. so if we look at last years thread, do we think letters will be sent this friday?

Next year. Hoping to get in next year. Most likely will only apply to KU next cycle. If I don't get in, I'll apply to KU + multiple other schools (mostly DO) two cycles from now.

Are you applying EDP? After much consideration, I think KUMC will be the only school I apply to as well. Based upon my stats, background, and connections, I have the best chance of getting into KU, such that if I can't get in there I probably can't get in anywhere else.

I don't have the numbers to get in EDP I don't feel like, but I'll probably apply EDP anyway just to show them it's by far my first choice. But I also would love going DO route to Oklahoma State, Marian or KCUMB.

Alright let's get back on track here, this is 2014-2015 not 2015-2016.

Did they send out decision letters this Monday? Has anyone called Beth?

There is no 2015-2016 thread, so I will use this year's thread...

You know it really doesn't matter what thread he posts in. He was answering someone's question. When he starts discussing his chances next year and what we think about them then by all means call the topic police.

If anyone confirmed with admissions when letters will be sent, please do let us know. The verdict is almost here ladies and gents.

I'll just wait here.jpg

Anyone know how campus assignment priority works between those accepted post-interview and those with a final decision in March? Are they the same in terms of preference? I know it is different between those off the wait list.

I interviewed the first week and they didn't even show up when they said they would. I can't imagine how late these ones will be 😛
