2014-2015 University of Texas Medical Branch - Galveston Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
can anyone shed some light on why other threads discuss schools such as UTMB and TT Lubbock to be in the "lower tier" of texas schools (though still great schools) when they have board scores of 130 and 132/pass rates of around 98-99% .... What am I missing, in what way are they lower tier?
I don't believe UTMB is considered in the lower tier. It's probably only ranked after Baylor, Southwestern, and Houston.
TT Lubbock on the other hand is probably perceived as the worst Texas school in large part to poor location.

That makes sense, however in that case, Galveston isn't the greatest either haha (though I loved the school). They both have great pass rates, board scores, match lists.. Both also have level 1 trauma centers within the campus, so I'm also confused why others place them in the lower tier (or in your case, just TT Lubbock)

Haha thanks. And no problem. I'm at 3.8 with a 29 MCAT. Decent EC's as well.

I have the same stats w/ a slightly higher GPA. I got my confirmation on July 7th and transmitted 6/25 but have heard nothing from the school. When did your stuff go through? Also are you URM?

I was transmitted 7/23 I believe. But yes, I am URM.

Submitted 6/23, but no confirmation email from UTMB yet :/

Just saw this post, so I am not sure when you transmitted. Regardless, assuming you transmitted 6/23 and you are URM and it took you so long to hear from UTMB, I probably have no chance here.

Thanks for catching me on that. I transmitted - not -. I submitted and confused the dates.

And it is still very early in the cycle. If you have similar stats, I don't think you should lose hope.

I've been a long time reader of this thread, but never actually posted. I just wanted to let you know to keep the hope. I too received an interview on Thursday for a 9/26 interview. I submitted 6/24 and transmitted 7/18. I am a reapplicant to UTMB with a much lower GPA than yours, but a high post-bacc GPA and average MCAT. Don't let up yet. It's still very early. I think they genuinely care about other things in your application beyond grades. I also know non-URMs at UTMB with imperfect Grades and MCAT.

Does anybody have access to UTMB's 2014 match results? Their website only shows their 2012 match results and it's VERY impressive

Edit: I don't really know how to interpret match lists, but I saw that 6 matched into Derm, 3 ortho, 3 plastics, 15 radiology. I think those are some of the most competitive specialties? If anyone wants to explain how the interpret match lists that would be great!

I am, transmitted on July 11th and still have not heard anything. This is the only school I have not received confrontation from.
I am transmitted on the 28th July. Never received any confirmation letter yet. Should I call them? This is the only school I didn't get a conf from

I got an interview invite without ever receiving a conformation e-mail. I tried calling once and no one answered and I never received a call back.

Submitted 7/15, Transmitted 8/12, UTMB status email 8/17 , just wanna know if I was too late in app cycle to have a shot at II.

The earliest any Texas school can make an offer to an in-state student is Nov. 15th, so you definitely have a shot at an II! It's still fairly early in the game, in my opinion!

How do you know this?

If ZK is to be believed then Oct 17 invites have gone out. That means two dates of october, three dates of november and two dates of december remain. I applied in June and have no II,'s luckily there are no bridges near my house.

I don't know if that necessarily means that dates earlier in October are full. For example, schools do split up interviewees so that there aren't a whole lot of one particular school on a certain day. Another thing is that I received an II at a TX school before a friend did, but I got a later date than my friend.

Got my II today for 10/24/14 🙂
Can't wait for this day to come!!!!

Transmitted on 8/23/14
CGPA: 3.96
BPCM GPA: 3.93
MCAT: 30
Lots of EC's and good letters of rec

Good luck everyone!!!

Thanks! Submitted TMDSAS 8/5 and transmitted 8/29. I received the confirmation email from UTMB 9/10.

Ahhh it's been over a month since my app was transmitted and still haven't heard anything from them. This wait is killing me 🙁

My last LOR was received 9/2/14.
9/18/14 - Invited for 10/17/14 interview.
-In state
-3.71 GPA
-29 MCAT

Does anyone know how many acceptances they give out?
228 matriculated last year according to MSAR so I am guessing slightly above that number (a little more than 250-260???) are accepted… no idea though just a ballpark

Over a month since app transmitted, and no complete email. OOS, is this normal? Transmitted 7/31

I would send an email/call. I got mine about 2 weeks after transmitted.

I just interviewed there this past week and never recieved a conformation email for what it's worth. However it is a great excuse to call and remind them you still exist.

any way to check status of app here?
i got the "app being reviewed" email on 7/7 and havent heard anything :depressed:

II this Friday. Heading to the night before tomorrow as well. Good luck to whoever is interviewing this Friday or in the future! If anyone wants to meet up tomorrow and hang out, I'm down. I'm arriving very early in the morning. Just shoot me a PM.

Congrats! When did you get this invite?

August 20 something I believe
Gotcha. The thread has been so quiet I was just trying to see if there had been another wave of invites. I applied late (Transmitted 8/27, MCAT score 9/9) but I have already received an invite for UTHSCSA so I was trying to see where everyone was in the process. UTMB is one of my dream schools (as is UTHSCSA) so I'm on edge about it! 3.84 cgpa, 3.76 sgpa, 31 MCAT, 100 hours clinical volunteering, 3rd year teacher nontrad. This whole process is nerve wracking and exhilarating!
