2015-2016 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

Omg I finally submitted this beast of a secondary essay HALLELUJAH :dead:

I didn't try to relate everything back to med school but instead took the approach of showing various aspects of my character growing up so hopefully that's what they're looking for...

Does anyone know what kind of community UCSD serves?

For those with secondaries, how long after the "Account Authentication/First sign on" email did you get your secondary. Thanks.

what is this PID business they are talking about? i got a user id after i completed the first sign on but havent come across a PID
I can't even get it to work, it says my AMCAS ID is incorrect! What the hell??

You don't use your AMCAS ID, it a special ID that was generated for you a while back when they asked you to create your account. Check your email, or just click "forgot password" and it'll tell you.

If you applied to UCSD for Undergraduate you were assigned a PID. You need that and you can request a password reset. That is what I had to do to pay the fees. Also, they only take E-Checks. Be ready with your checkbook to provide routing and account numbers.

Just finished this beast of secondary draft, however instead of making it smaller I made it bigger 10,720 char FML:diebanana:

Hey all I'm OOS..3.98/35 MCAT still no secondary. Anybody else in this boat with me? What's the cut off?
I received and submitted secondaries to UCLA and UCSF...
This happened to me last year. I have 3.9+ GPA/35 MCAT and waited for UCSD secondary until mid-August last year, after I had gotten UCLA, UCSF, etc. Don't lose hope!

Could someone post the prompts please or confirm if they're different from last year's? Thanks!

I am also OOS. I received a secondary to UCSD; but I have not received secondaries to either UCLA or UCSF. I think you will get one soon.
My MCAT is 39 and my GPA is 3.7.

So, I reset my password, but where do I go to login? I haven't received a secondary yet. I can "see my application status" using this link https://meded.ucsd.edu/asa/admissio...statusLogin.cfm?CFID=2067756&CFTOKEN=68930553

but that doesn't require me to input a password anywhere.

Sorry for the double post, but I just received a secondary invite from here. LizzyM ~70 OOS/heavy research. verified 7/14 (but I got an email saying that they only received my application 7/20)

Having so much trouble with the autobiography. It's 2x as long as it needs to be right now. 🙁

Just got a secondary as well! Verified 7/13! 2 down, still waiting on UCI, UCD and UCSF, but making progress 😀

Secondary received! Very relieved by this one, UCSD was the only school not to grant me a secondary last year. Must have done something right! Now I just need UC Davis to complete the set...

Wow! Just got my secondary! So excited! My parents are both from Cali and I would love to go back. I've had love from UCD and UCLA as well, so maybe the dream is alive! Congrats to everyone else who has progressed! :highfive:

FINALLY! Thanks for the support ^^. Only waiting to hear back from Vandy now....

Awwwwww yisssssss secondary received. Just waiting on UCSF now.

MSTP here and still waiting for a secondary... They received my AMCAS 7/02 and I got secondaries from UCSF and UCI already, but no UCSD 🙁

Just starting work on my secondary! Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions or tips to tackle this mammoth question? Anything would help!

I spent most of it on my childhood, very little on college (as most of that is in my PS and ECs). Funny, once I got going, ended up cutting out 2 paragraphs and trimming it down. Bring up stories from your youth/HS that were meaningful to you!! Good luck.

To all asking, the prompt for t he essay is the same as last year. See post number 2 on this thread for the last year prompt to write an autobiography

Hey I know this might be a little random, but I am wondering if anyone knows whether schools (like UCSD) send out an email if you have been invited for an interview and when you are no longer under consideration? Or just when they want to offer someone an interview?

According to their admissions process page, they do send out an email if you are no longer under consideration at any point in the process.

Oh cool, that's great, thanks! Do you know if that standard for all medical schools, or do some just not say anything?

I have heard about schools putting people on a "hold of death" before, so I assume not all schools do that. I'm a current applicant though so I don't have any personal experience with this.

Does anyone know if they're responsive to in the area emails?

I don't know the answer to this, but I'm in San Diego for summer break and I really wish I could be like "hi, I live here... interview please?"

Finally sec submitted!!! What a beast of an essay! Def a reach for me! All I can do now is hope for the best and expect the worst!!!
Good Luck everyone!!!

I'm struggling here. I've written my essay, but it's pretty heavy, and it's difficult to send something like this off into the oblivion to be evaluated by a stranger. Writing something this personal will make it very painful to receive a rejection...

Can anyone direct me to a school with secondary essay questions like "What is your spirit animal" and "What is your favorite flavor of ice cream?" (automatic rejection if you don't like ice cream, automatic acceptance if it's mint chocolate chip!) 😛 Lol

How long are you guys making your essay?
I was able to cut my essay down to 5,966 characters..... It seems like most people, like me, overwrote and exceeded the character limit so I wouldn't be shocked if a lot of essays ended up just under the 6000 character limit. BUT if you are able to get your story across more concisely and with less characters, don't stress yourself out trying to write more!

How long are you guys making your essay?

Yeah, I waaay overwrote initially but then cut it down to 5,456 characters. I would say don't be afraid to overwrite, as you can always cut later and I think cutting an essay that's too long is better than trying to lengthen an essay that's too short.

I'm having trouble just starting this essay!! 😕

I just submitted! The essays for Prime and MAS Clinical Research were also really long, but I'm feeling pretty great about them.
