2015-2016 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I do not, unfortunately. I did interview yesterday, and was told that I won't find out until 10/15 (~4 weeks). The director says this means our group has to "wait longer than usual," so I assume a normal wait time is less than that?

I just saw your MDApps and I must say very impressive stats and thank you so much for such a detailed description of the interview day 🙂. Really informative! Good luck with your cycle but I'm sure you won't need any with your stats!

Thank you! Do you also happen to know the time frame in which one should expect a post-interview decision?
In the past, the committee would meet on the following Monday (all interviews are on Thursdays) and decisions were emailed either Monday afternoon or Tuesday mornings. So a very quick turnaround.

I think this first group just has to wait longer since AMCAS doesnt allow schools to release acceptances until after Oct. 15

I wouldn't be surprised, since we were very explicitly told that our interview has the most weight in the decision process (in fact, they essentially ignore stats at this point, and may look at ECs or LORs). I remember seeing a place for interviewers to score applicants; and I wouldn't be surprised if our entire interview experience is represented by a total numerical score. If acceptances are given to applicants who score above a certain threshold, decisions are easy.

**all speculation; please don't quote me on this.

Has anyone who has scored a 511 or below on the new MCAT gotten an interview here yet?

Ah, I don't think that we were told this information (the part on how your interview has the most weight/they essentially only look at interview/EC/LoRs). Was that information stated during the interview day? Or is that part of your speculation?

An applicant asked if stats were still considered in the final review process. Dave said, "No, not really. At this , it's your interview that holds the most weight."

Do you guys know if stats are a big deal when selecting interviews or do they stop looking at stats when you pass the screening and get a secondary?

Haha well now I'm curious, were you offered an II later?
On 2/3 I received an email saying their interview slots were full but I was on the waitlist for interview.
That's the last I ever heard from them, a true "silent rejection" if you will haha.

Well poop. Thanks for the info though! Good luck if you're re-applying this cycle!

hey do they ever send out a complete email? I don't think I ever got one...

I got this last cycle too, I think we're in the same boat for a lot of things so good luck friend!

Silly question:
For those of you who have been on the clinic tour, do you know what the dress code is? Not sure if I should be in full business attire and I would feel pretty silly being the only one walking around in a full suit, blazer and all. 😕

It's definitely casual attire. I wouldn't wear a t-shirt, but jeans and a casual button-down are perfect. Some guys even wore shorts.

My primary was verified August 4th and my secondary was sent the 13th. From what I've seen in other UC threads, the UCs aren't very predictable with regards to when/how they send out their secondaries :-( Still haven't received UCLA's or UCD's.

I received UCLA's secondary after a week but haven't yet received UCSD's (didn't apply to the other UC's). Go figure. It's been about 9 weeks for UCSD, although UCSD did say their preliminary review would be at least 6-8 weeks.

It's all a crap shoot in my book. Last year I got UCLA and UCSF but no UCSD, this year only UCSD....

I'm on the opposite side of the spectrum. Got a secondary from UCSD and still nothing from UCLA or UCSF. Since UCSD is a computerized system and you got an automatic secondary last year, I don't see why you didn't get one this year unless your stats changed or something.....

Also, has anyone who has been complete mid-September and submitted AMCAS in August heard anything yet from the school? My GPA is above 3.90 and my MCAT is from 510-512 and I'm getting pretty anxious waiting around. Please let me know if you know anyone with similar stats get a II from UCSD! I'm OOS, ORM, and non-disadvantaged BTW....

I'm a first-time applicant to UCSD (and UCLA), and I did not apply to medical school last year.

I've been complete since mid-July and not heard anything. Just try to relax, this process involves lots of waiting around. And SDN can make it worse

Nah, I'm in the same boat with you, but SDN helps temper the anxiety, as I know I am not alone.

Did anyone who did not apply for any joint masters programs get an II?

I'm still working on the application. It sort of feels wrong to not select interest in any of them... Not sure if I'll be able to have time to craft a good essay for the joint program I'm slightly interested in..that autobiographical sketch is a beast already in itself

I didn't apply to any of the joint master's programs.

Did anyone else get a weird "electronic billing notice" email today? I submitted my secondary with payment back in early Sept... I'm going to assume this is just an auto-generated error? 😵

It's auto-generated because they created a PID for you when you applied. Don't worry about it. It's unrelated to your current app status.

Source: was a UCSD undergrad + grad student + current employee.

Congratulations to everyone who have gotten IIs from UCSD. Has anyone who has submitted AMCAS in August and a secondary in September gotten II's yet? I just submitted my secondary a couple of weeks ago and haven't heard a peep yet. I also find that certain people who are complete earlier than others sometimes receive II's later than other people who were complete at a later time. Do you guys know why this is? As far as I know, schools go through applications in the order they are received....perhaps after they split the apps to different reviewers, each reviewer takes a different amount of time...

I didn't get an email, but I was a late applicant.
What did the email say?

I think it was only sent to people who already interviewed. The subject line was "Welcome from UCSD SOM Admissions Reps" and the first two sentences were, "Hello! On behalf of the UCSD SOM Admissions Committee and entering class of 2015, we would like to extend a warm congratulations".......... "on the completion of your interview." I know that acceptances aren't sent out until the 15th, but man, reading Welcome, SOM Admissions Committee, and Congratulations all before the words "completion of your interview" made my heart skip a beat.

Le sigh

I got it too and got so excited and confused since it wasn't Oct 15 🙁🙁🙁

Why would they tease us like this haha

Got that email too... I wonder if UCSD will actually let us know on Oct 15... last couple years they pushed the first decisions back toward the end of the month.
