2015-2016 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'm assuming the answer to this is "no", but do they even look at your primary app if the only thing that isn't in yet is your MCAT score? I know they highly recommend having your primary in by September 1st, but does that even matter if your MCAT score isn't in yet?

Also, for those of you with interviews, would you mind sharing your MCAT score?

Good luck to everyone applying and interviewing! Also, apologies if anyone here was in the tour group on the 10th that opened the anatomy lab doors to see my group hammering the hell out of a cadaver's skull. If anyone wants to ask anything, I'd be glad to help, currently an M2 here!

Have all of my materials turned in as of today. I am IS regular decision applicant. How long will it be before I could get an interview invite? Anybody know what's typical?

Interview dates are subject to change but for now the website lists them as:
KC campus:
Oct 7-9
Nov 16-19
Nov 30
Dec 1-2
Jan 5-8
Jan 25-28
Wichita campus:
Oct 26-30
Salina campus:
Dec 8-9
So you can get an invite about week prior to any of these dates

Anybody know if there is a typical turnaround rate though? Like if it's a week, two, a month, two months? Or does it just vary? sorry I'm anxious lol

II today!! OOS but with very strong KS ties. LizzyM 73, for those who care. Best wishes to all for good news (which a little bird told me might come, ahem, VERY SOON for some of you)!!!

Does anyone know if KU's interviews are done blindly or with our application sitting in front of the interviewers??

There are 3 mini interviews, 2 with your app and 1 blind.......if I am not mistaken

I interviewed EDP and there were two, thirty minute interviews. The first interviewer had access to all of our materials and the second interviewer only had access to our supplementary application.

I thought about posting this to the main board but it seems that qualifications vary so much state to state. How does shadowing and clinical volunteering factor in at KU? Obviously there is no magic number of hours but does anyone know anything more?

In undergrad a few years ago, Sandra told us they value shadowing more than clinical volunteering, but both were still important and required

A good luck peom to everyone!

'Twas the night before EDP decision when all through KUmed not a creature was stirring, not even a lab-rat; The IV bags were hung by the patients with care, in hopes that Dean McCurdy's letter soon would be there. The students were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of becoming MD's danced in their heads..
And mamma in her 'kerchief, and I in my cap, Had just settled down after a long MCAT wrap

When out on Student Doctor Network there arose such a clatter,
I sprang from my Netflix to see what was the matter.
Away to my iPhone I flew like a flash,
Tore open the email, hoping my heart wouldn't crash

The subject-line on the breast of the newly arrived mail,
Gave the lustre of anticipation, teeth clenched to the nail
When, what to my wondering eyes should appear, something terrifically anew, stating

"Congratulations...YOU did it, and Welcome to KU!"

Did you already get an acceptance? If so welcome to the family. I remember exactly what I was doing when I got that email!

No, I interviewed for EDP this year and we're supposed to get the email today or tomorrow with the decision. For now just trying to send out good vibes to all the other EDP and traditional apps

Factors in big. KU more than any other place I applied looks at the whole applicant and not just MCAT or GPA. I would say the more patient contact and unique experiences you have, the better. There isn't a magic number like you said, but it's definitely something they addressed when I interviewed, and at the end of the day, I know it was a huge part of me being accepted here.

If all goes according to last year's thread, EDP decisions could start going out within the hour (Magic 8 ball concurs). Until then, I'll continue eerily feeling phantom phone vibrations and sincerely wishing everyone the best of luck! Let's make this blank matriculant slate our oyster!

...I'm rapidly losing faith in the power of the Magic 8 ball to predict these EDP letters. Who thinks we're waiting another week?

I would like to think that this year it's taking so long because they decided to take us all lol

Did they tell you today specifically? My application year they sent out decisions on the 30th, like a week before regular interviews I think

At the interview they said that we would most likely know either the 24th or 25th. But honestly it's probably a pretty involved process so can't really complain for the wait!

EDP people we're almost there! We'll know for sure by Thursday so fingers crossed! Everyone on my interview day seemed awesome and I would love to be in the same class as you guys!

Same here! What day did you interview? I was on Monday

What factored into y'all's decision to apply early decision?

This was the cheapest option for me, the only school I ever really considered and I really like it. Also I'm in state so that's big here

I'm in-state and KU shows huge preference for in-state applicants. I also just wanted to option of only needing to apply to one place and then being done. (save money, find out by October, etc.)

File complete on 8/20, out of state student

When do you think decisions will be sent out about whether I got an interview or not?

Also, is there a place on the website that will tell you things like "application in review" "application on hold" etc etc? Or is the only thing just "file complete"?

Unfortunately it's just "file complete." At least that's the way it was for EDP.

When I applied a couple years ago they told us all the out of staters interviewed in February (and the few people I knew that were out of state did interview in late Jan or Feb). They might have changed it, I'm not sure

Ooh! Fresh meat!

Available for questions for incoming and applicants. 🙂
