2015-2016 University of Kansas Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all, I am an OOS but I will be in Kansas visiting family in early January. Would it be weird for me to call and see if I am going to get an interview and if so, if I could have it while in the state?

What is taught in the first 8-week class 'Fundamentals of Medicine'?

Foundations is a general overview of medicine mostly focused on biochemistry. I thought it was extremely fragmented and confusing, and really didn't demonstrate its value until the second half of first year when the concepts they taught were finally tied into the systems we were studying at the time. Do your best to master it, but also don't freak out if it doesn't immediately make sense...you will see most of it a second, third, fourth time. The best thing you can do in foundations is figure out how to be successful in med school. Get that down and the rest will be easy.

Like stugglebus, I'm on hold until March. IS, interviewed 10/8, MCAT was 507, cGPA 3.7 and sGPA 3.5. Lots of hours working for a clinic in Kansas City also. It's going to be a long wait.
Yeah, that waitlist til March was the worst, I was in like a perpetual bad mood until March 15 when they put me on hold. Good luck to you guys and anyone else on hold, hopefully the waiting pays off!

For current med students... Do most professors use PDFs, PowerPoints, etc. that they post online and then use to guide their lectures or is it more of strictly note taking. I know videos of the lectures are posted online.

Most of them post PowerPoints & we take notes off of them. Orientation week is great for going over how classes are setup and the normal routine.

They post the powerpoints online and most of us download them onto OneNote and do most of the work in there. If you don't use OneNote yet, I suggest you try using it for the next 6 months or so and get familiar with how it works, what it can and can't do, etc...

Wondering if any other EDP applicants who did not get in have heard about our second interview dates yet?? I was told that I would be interviewed again in early January since I was applying regular decision after not getting the early decision post-interview acceptance but haven't been given a date yet...

At least 69 accepted so far as per the Facebook page. How many seats left to be filled?

In-State Interviews completed Dec 9, 2015.
Accepted Students Stats based on the thread as of today:
MCAT: >508
GPA: >3.8
Accepted Students Joined Facebook Group for 2015-2016: 69

The number could be higher than 69 due to not all join Facebook. There could be accepted students with lower stats, as low as 501.

Received my II today for Jan 6th at the KC campus!!! I'm a resident, with a 3.3 GPA in Biochemistry and Genetics major with a Chemistry minor from Texas A&M, 31 MCAT, tons of EC, and am about to graduate from UTH with a certification in Health Informatics. Anyone else getting there a day early?

Here's what I've inferred about the numbers:

46 accepted ED (per Sandy on my interview day), ~20-30 accepted so far through regular decision (based on "top 10% rule" Sandy described on interview day), probably another 10 or so for people who did post-bacc, and a few more for deferments.

So in total we have roughly ~80-90 already accepted. They overfill the class and accept 230, so that leaves about 140 spots. Another 50 will be put on the wait list as well based on previous years. Granted, this is all based on approximations and assumptions, so take this with a grain of salt.

The numbers you quoted seems to be in the ballpark for interviews completed as of October. November and December interview selection results are not out yet.

Yeah, I agree, I just had a running total for people who have heard back so far. So add on 6-10 more people per interview group on average.

:help::hello::help: Any OOS peeps interviewing January 8th and wanting to split & share a cab/hotel? :help::hello::help: I'm flying in Jan 7th and the hotel across the street that they recommended is $114, so it's going to cost me a crap ton of money...

Anyone know how many in-state interviews conducted this period?

What is the top 10% rule?

What is the top 10% rule?
After each interview batch they take the top 10% of those applicants and accept them, and give them the letter within 30 days ideally. Middle group gets sent the on hold til March letter, bottom gets rejected

Any update?
No updates yet! Every day before I check the mail I get this tightening in my chest. I'd rather not hear anything until after Christmas! I'll take the anticipation over a rejection letter any day. How about you? Any news?

Hi all, I received a rejection letter in the mail today, post interview. I am sad. Thanks for ruining Christmas KU.

Obligatory stats:
3.96 Post-baccalaureate science GPA, 3.52 Overall GPA, 33 MCAT, OOS
Primary Complete 06/02
Secondary Complete 07/09
II Invitation 11/12
Interview 11/30

Interviewed 11/30. Anybody else from that day remember them saying we'd hear back the week of Dec. 17th?

Dean McCurdy said they would try to get out responses before Christmas, but that they were extremely busy. I'm so sorry about your rejection right before Christmas! That's the pits.

I am sorry to hear that but I hope everything works out with a different school. What did you think about the interview? Anything I should know beforehand?
