2015-2016 University of New Mexico Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
If it's any help to you all, I received my acceptance e-mail at about 1:00 in the afternoon on 2/15/26. I was also informed that I was accepted at the meeting on 2/8/16. So if I were a betting man, I'd say some of you got accepted yesterday and will be hearing about it next Monday.

Edit: Why they wait to send out the e-mail after accepting someone I have no idea, adds to the torture I guess 🙂

Yeah, dragging it out 10 years is evil lol

This also probably means that some of us were rejected and will be finding out on Monday ....:nailbiting:

Lol! Funny error. But sadly not even that far from the truth considering what I went through to get in 😀

When did you interview?

Long time lurker, first time poster. I am out of state and interviewed on 2/5, which was the last of the interview dates for this application cycle. Still painfully waiting to hear back. Best of luck to all still waiting as well!
Also, my vote is we hear back 3/8.

Has anyone received any recent updates? If not, looks like we have to wait another few days. My guess is probably next Thursday or Friday.

No news as far as in know, although I haven't given up on hearing today yet.

I called the office & they said it'll be (more than likely) before march 15

How I imagine the admission office's response to the question when people ask if we might hear back sooner than the 15th... I don't think it will be today. I'm sticking to my guns and still saying it will be next Wednesday.

For anyone still waiting and curious, they let a ton more people into the FB group this week but I think it was mostly BA/MD and not regular decision folks.

Last admissions meeting is on the 8th so I'm assuming decisions will be sent out on the 9th or 10th. Good luck guys!

You are 100% sure the last admissions meeting is on the 8th?

Shouldn't they already know the applicants who will be accepted since they already scored everyone at prior adcom meetings? Or do they move applicants around based on other factors besides the scores?

There are probably ties that need to be broken. I bet hometown, family background, and things of that nature are what they use to break ties. Seems like they really want a class that represents the state accurately.

Hopefully I am considered in state. I just moved here in July.

Is UNM your number one choice?

Did you graduate from high school in New Mexico, and/or have you lived in New Mexico before? I'm pretty sure residency for admission purposes is a year before application.

Now to answer your question. All I will say is that I plan to make a final decision after attending second look if I am accepted. If I'm waitlisted, I'm 100% moving on with my life and going elsewhere hahaha

Waiting since October and being rejected now would be torture 😱... Unfortunately I think they will be sending out as many rejections as they will acceptances/rejections :arghh:

No but I have strong family connections and I am an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe.

Oh nice. What other schools have you been accepted at?

If you're an enrolled member of a federally recognized tribe you will definitely be considered IS!!

FWIW, everybody I know who interviewed in Sept/Oct last year who didn't get a rolling decision was either accepted or waitlisted.

Oh that's good. I interviewed in early December but waiting that long must be stressful.

Those are offered after march 15 i believe
So does that mean there is still people who have been rejected who might hear from prep? Or is it only for those on the waiting list or not rolling rejected

Not sure when we would definitely hear by if we're considered for it, but I'm guessing sometime this month based off things I've heard about the program. I was also told that people who've already been rejected could still be considered for PrEP. I don't think being rolling rejected has anything to do with it. If I hear of anything else I'll let you know.

If anyone gets invited for PrEP can you please post on here or message me?

Yes if anyone else hears from prep please post it to keep us informed.

For everybody asking about PrEP, I think it would be prudent to go over the SOM website to get a better picture of who/what they want for the program. They seem to emphasize educationally-disadvantaged (eg. rural, low-income, broken families, URM) as a MAJOR selection component. You may already have checked into this, but I feel people toss around "PrEP" without being 100% aware of the purpose of the program. In addition, I interpret it as something for people with already rockstar EC's. Also, it says to directly contact the admissions office for more info on the process.

It is not a second chance for those who aren't admitted. I don't mean to be so frank, but I think it's worth knowing if you meet the criteria they are looking for.

I was a student assistant for a pre-med advisor in undergrad, and I've heard some of the craziest app mistakes people have ever made (not saying a rejection implies a mistake on your app, this is an uber-competitive process after all) and how some have been shut out their first app and got flooded with acceptances the next year, so if you want some advice please PM me.

In the past there have been people that were rejected but then considered for prep and then others were wait listed and considered for prep

I think you are completely right. They consider maybe 20 ppl for prep and I don't think those people have any idea who they are until they receive the email. As you all know, med school admissions committee stuff is so hard to interpret and while there are certain criteria that they look for, just because you meet that criteria doesn't mean you'll get an interview for prep. Usually those people have something that can be easily fixed with help wrong with their application. Maybe a concerning bad grade or lower Mcat but they have amazing EC's and letters of rec. I believe their interviewers really fight for them as well. PrEP is a great program but very few are actually considered for it.

So if you are a registered member of a federally recognized tribe you are considered IS?

Not sure how to interpret the wording, but it says "consideration is given" when the heading says "residency requirements."

UNM receives (and competes for) federal money for Native American students that they succeed in recruiting.

I've met people from tribes as far as New York who have been able to receive consideration, despite not having a single tie to New Mexico. I'm not aware of any who have attended, but they do receive consideration.

Could you guys explain more throughly the quote, "ties that must be broken"? What ties are there within an application and how do these ultimately affect your application?

From my understanding, ties refer to multiple applicants having the same overall score. So say that after two applicants are scored individually based on GPA/MCAT/non-cognitive, their overall scores are identical. These cases are what we refer to when we say there are ties that need to be broken. How they break ties specifically is anybody's guess.

Yale's descisions went out today so hopefully UNM will let us know today or tomorrow!

I wonder if the administration ever look at these types of threads and snicker at our compulsive behaviors and excitement at every whispered rumor. Guessing I'll never know, but just musing myself between obsessive email checks.

Are we still thinking today? It's getting really close to the 15th... Haha.

I sure hope so, this angst is killing me. Last rumor heard was yesterday was the last meeting, so IF that is true I don't see why they would just sit on the info.

I still hate March....it gives me "final decision" anxiety. I feel for you guys! Hang in there....if its not the answer you want (and you're sure you want to do medicine) get back on that horse. Its hard... but eventually it'll happen. I got in on my 4th try...so keep after it!

Thank you for the motivation, encouragement & inspiration 🙂

First time poster. I also feel the anxiety and obsessive email checking. It is so surreal. If worse comes to worse, i just hope we hear back by Friday and don't have to endure another weekend of questioning and reanalyzing haha

Good luck to all of you. I can tell that everyone wants it.

Let another day of obsessive email refreshing begin...
