2015-2016 University of South Alabama Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Nothing for me as well. Looks like tomorrow will be the day.

Congratulations guys! I would imagine that all of us probably got the same response, so lets enjoy what Mr. Scott mentioned as the best part of med school!

I got my email today. I will see you guys next fall!

How was the interview process? I know there is 3 separate interviews. Are they more conversational? Do they ask ethics questions?

I'll go ahead and chime in. All of my interviews were conversational. Although I personally did not get any ethical questions, some others did from what I gathered from the chatter afterwards. However, believe me when I say that South will be one of the most laid back interviews you'll have, if not the most.

Just out of curiosity is there anyone that applied that is not ED on this thread? If so, if anyone took the new MCAT do you know what type of score they are looking at for in state applicants? Thanks and goodluck to everyone! 🙂

I've heard a few people say that their scores of ~508 +/- were positively commented on in interviews. Not sure what exactly that means though.

Just received my interview invite. ~72 LizzyM. IS. (Obviously) Not ED. Interview date is on Wednesday, November 18th. Does anyone else have an interview date on the same day? I'm trying to carpool to save money if possible. Coming from Birmingham.

A friend with a low MCAT let me see their feedback after being rejected from UAB ( I know it's not South, but relevant at least) and they told them to retake the MCAT and shoot for a 506+. I'm sure some people are going to get in both schools with scores under that mark, but they will probably have to be pretty strong applicants otherwise.

Congrats @Traygus! - When were you 100% complete?

That's the weird thing.....I'm not 100% complete even now. I'm still waiting on my comp letter which should be uploaded by tomorrow. I do have two other letters up already though, so not sure if that made a difference or what. UAB hasn't even processed my secondary yet and I finished it before I even mailed off USA's secondary.

Hah, Peggy (USA assistant to Mark Scott) pretty specifically told me they wouldn't extend an interview without a committee letter.

I am a re-applicant however, and that usually throws the rules out the window.

I dunno, but trying to figure out their/UAB's process hasn't worked once for me yet - just gonna wait with a bit of sanity. Thanks for the response!

How often does South A send out IIs? On a continuous basis or in waves?

Did Mark Scott give any exact indication of when we might hear something to those of you interviewed on October 21 or 28? Earlier in October, I think he told us either the first week or first part of November, but I was just curious if y'all might have heard something more sure or maybe even something different.

For those of you waiting on II's....When did you mail in your secondary?

My understanding is that they do 3 batch interviews. One is already done. The next will be in Nov. My secondary was received at the end of August I believe and I received the II last week. The one after that will be in February I believe. So if you haven't heard anything yet, I wouldn't anticipate anything until January.

Yep. I submitted my secondary app back in late August. Haven't heard anything.

How are you all preparing for your upcoming interviews? I'm new to this process and I'd like to be thorough. My friends already in medical school have been a bit slow in responding to my queries due to their workload. I found this page where I looked through the most recent interviewees feedback to see the questions they posted. Is there more that I need to review besides my own essays?

Also, if you guys would like....I copy pasted a ton of the possible questions I found on that page into a word doc....I can upload it here.

Yeah. I'm not sure when we are suppose to hear back. I thought he said the 1st week in November is when they start sending acceptances letters/ waitlist cards. But now Im not sure.

Yeah.. That's what I heard -- and we were in the same room together, so I know I wasn't hearing him incorrectly.

I called earlier this week. The administrative assistant said they were planning on sending notifications this Friday, November 20.

Exactly! I think last year they sent them out around Nov 14th. But that's good they gave you a date. I cant believe they still use snail mail. It would be nice if they called instead.

Mark told our group today that the first wave of acceptances/holds will be sent out Friday or Monday. It's going to be a smallish group however, as they are only sending acceptances to the most qualified this round (people above a certain "high" score on a scale of 1-10).

@SMIGuy @Traygus Congrats!! How did you all receive the acceptance notification? Snail mail?

Yeah. Snail Mail. Except mine wasn't very snaily considering I interviewed last Wednesday and got the letter of acceptance today. I guess I was very lucky to have interviewed the day that the committee convened to decide on the first wave of acceptances. This is very surreal.

Would y'all that have been accepted mind sharing your stats? I'm wondering what their threshold for the first set of acceptances was.

@Traygus Change your status. It will feel great.

Indeed it did. Indeed. It. Did.

As for those asking about stats for accepted for thresholds. I had a 3.77 cgpa, 3.66 sgpa and a 512 MCAT (127/127/130/128). There's more to it than that though. Stats are only 50% according to the director of admissions....albeit low stats seriously hurt you at south.

Like user Traygus mentioned, this is only 50% of the equation:

3.688 cgpa
3.54 sgpa
MCAT 510 (128, 129, 127, 126)

I fall pretty heavily into the other 50% as you can see haha. I'm proof that you can suck at physics and still make it!
