2015-2016 University of South Alabama Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Not sure, but I have a feeling it will be snail mail.
I'm hoping they send them out in order to get to us by April 15, communicating with us by their deadline:
"April 15 – Applicants who have not been accepted will be placed on an alternate list or rejected."
(on the phone I was there would be acceptances, alternate lists, and rejections on April 15. )

But...
Since mail from south usually arrives at the beginning of the week, it would follow tradition for it to be sent on April 15, a Fri, and arrive April 18/19. Meaning April 15 is then just a deadline for south to do those things, not to communicate to us that they have done them. Hopefully it's the first case and we get letters by April 15, but logic and my growing pessimism about this process is saying probably April 18/19.

And then, those of us who get Alternate list wait for a big movement around April 30th.

So, does this mean that there will be no more acceptances sent out other than those coming off the wait list?

When I called they said the next time anyone would hear anything is April 15.

So, does this mean that no more regular decision acceptances will go out? Was she implying that the only thing going out now will be rejections and wait list letters? I don't understand. Mark Scott said the bar would be lowered 2 more times at least since my interview in early March, It just seems that no one has received anything since then, except hold cards.

@lady_south you didn't ask me but I'll chime in anyway. There's no way to know when the score will be lowered. The waitlist isn't out yet so people who currently have a hold card can still be accepted if they lower the score. Once the waitlist comes out only those on the list can receive acceptance. Hope this helps!

Also, it looks like in previous years sometimes they didn't lower the score three times. I think it just depends on the pool of applicants.

No, the way she made it sound is that there will be one last batch of regular decision acceptances going out April 15, along with rejections and alternate list notifications. She also said that some who get alternate list will only be on it for "a short time" before they are accepted. It does sound like no more acceptances until that date, however. Who really knows though...

Thanks for posting this!

This process especially sucks because I just have no clue where I stand. Maybe I'm in the "easy rejection" pile, maybe I'm in the top of the alternate list, maybe I'm right in the middle. Makes me oscillate between confidence and despair pretty quickly. I'd be close to jumping off a cliff if I didn't have a DO acceptance in my back pocket.
We are in literally the exact same position. Glad I'm not the only one.

Everyone else got that "AAMC Recommendations for Applicants" email too, right?

Uhhh, I'm praying it's not false hope, but did anyone else get the CERTIPHI background check email?

This is good news. I know someone who got that last year and received an acceptance a few days later.

I got one from AAMC the day I was accepted to UAB. Just saying...

I'd be (cautiously) optimistic if I were in our position.

I'm staying optimistic until the end! Lol. What I wouldn't give to go to UAB though...

I got one with the subject line "AMCAS Background Check Information" the day I submitted my primary applications.

Still, considering the timing of your email, I would also be cautiously optimistic.

I received that one also. However, this had a link to actual paperwork that I had to fill out- it was requiring a physical signature for a background check. I just found it odd because I have not received any acceptance or waitlist notifications. I'm just remaining hopeful that it turns out to be a situation like @This Guy was speaking of- that I get an acceptance letter in a few days. This process makes me a nervous wreck! Lol.

@lady_south when did you interview? And do you mind sharing your stats?

I interviewed on March 23, I believe it was the last interview day. I have a 3.9 GPA, TONS of extra curricular activities, lots of work/volunteer/shadowing experience, but my MCAT was not so hot. So, it is my hopes that my interview and GPA portions of the calculations pulled me through. Livin' on a prayer here, guys.

@lady_south I'm with @This Guy! I think you're in! I went back and read the original email and you only get the background check with an acceptance or waitlist.

That sounds promising for you, I will cross fingers for both of us!

Okay- I know I'm beating a dead horse here, but you guys are so understanding of finding hope in such little things- like a background check email. (Nobody understands unless you're in the same shoes.) With that being said, I am quoting the AAMC instruction manual for my cautious optimism. Plus the suspense is KILLING me. I'm no good at wait to find out what I'll be doing for the next four years.

"In support of this recommendation, the AAMC facilitates a National Background Check Service, through which Certiphi Screening, Inc. (a Vertical Screen® Company) will procure a national background report on Early Decision applicants at the point of acceptance and all other accepted applicants after January 1. In addition, beginning in May of each year, a national background report will be procured for a subset of applicants who are on a participating school's alternate list; medical schools will not receive such reports until the point of acceptance."

This makes me wonder if wait list background check notifications don't go out until May? (Which would mean any before May would mean a conditional acceptance.) So, my question is, are there any wait listers from previous years that have an commentary or rememberance/verification that this could possibly be the case?

I was wait-listed last year and never received a notification for a background check, if that means anything. We're all pulling for you! Let us know what happens

Nope, I wish! Lol

And I thought interviews were over already! So you didn't have a hold card right?

I interviewed on the last day- March 23, which was the last interview day. I did receive a hold card the following Monday.

Okay, I see. Well let us know when you get the letter! I'm excited for you!

I assume everybody thats applied to FASFA has received an email from USA that includes a student JAG number? Just got mine - surprised to see I already have an assigned number.

I have not received that, however, I just got the email today stating that my FASFA was processed

Waitlist/rejections comes out this week! Anybody else freaking out? Lol

I guess it's pretty much confirmed after lady_south's acceptance that, despite what I heard on the phone, only waitlist/rejections are coming out now?

It's a fair assumption--I'm just wondering if that was 100% confirmed. Now that we're so close to hearing back I guess there's no need to worry too much about that anyway though, I spose!

@eee123 based on previous years it seems that only waitlist or rejections will come out. Then around the end of May after people give up acceptances for other schools there will be another round of acceptances.

Feeling a rejection is coming Friday. Not trying to be negative, just not feeling confident.

Having a previous acceptance makes this all so much easier. I'm just ecstatic I'm going to med school regardless.

Good luck all
