2016-2017 University of California - San Diego Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
hi! i wanted to ask the current UCSD SOM students, what's your favorite thing about UCSD?

It was pretty cool! The first 30-40 mins were a q&a with the director of admissions. Then the first group went to go interview (32 people in total, two groups of 16). I was part of the group that interviewed later so I had 90 mins of nervous downtime lol. I got to sit in on a first year foundations of medical science class though! Then the second group interviews. Its MMI so that in itself is somewhat stressful but it goes by surprisingly fast and before you know it its over so I actually liked it. (8 stations in total). After that, there was a lunch with a couple MS2s. After that, is a tour with some other students and finally we regroup with the director of admissions for some last minute questions on the admissions process (when we can expect to hear back and the possible outcomes).

I have a small logistics question about the interview day for you. I've had one MMI where they took bags/padfolios and didn't give them back until we left for the day and another where they just kept them in a room for the MMI and we had them for the rest of the day afterwards. Did they do one of those for UCSD's MMI? I wasn't prepared for my last one keeping my stuff, so knowing to throw somethings I might want in my pockets beforehand would be much appreciated. Thanks!

They have said there will be approx 90 minutes of downtime on the interview day. Anyone have any reccomendation on how to spend that time/ what to go and check out?

Does applying for the Prime program slow down the process? I submitted my secondary almost 10 weeks ago.

Well I'll tell you this, there is a room where you can leave your things for the day. During the MMI process you'll rotate around this hallway going to various rooms (8 in total). Outside of the room is shelf with a portfolio containing the prompt you're going to be read and talk about. They give you some paper and a pen to write down any notes before entering the room. Just remember you have two mins to read and think about the prompt, I personally didn't write anything down but others did, its entirely up to you. The less stuff you have the better in my opinion.

I completely agree with that. What I meant was for after the MMI is over. Did they give people a chance to go back and get their stuff, or did they not let you back to get what people left there for the MMI until the whole day was over? Like for during the downtime if you had the first MMI session, etc.

Has anyone received an e-bill from UCSD after submitting the secondary? I've already paid the application fee, so I'm not so sure what the bill is for.

It's been 12 weeks since the secondary for me. Still nothing. Anyone heard anything?

Yeah, I called them to confirm what it is- it's just an additional confirmation that a payment has been made to UCSD.

So we don't actually need to do anything about it, right? It's just a confirmation email? Having trouble logging in and wondering if I need to worry about it

Put on hold for interview just now, not surprised but slightly disappointed.

Anyone know if this is basically a rejection or if people actually get off this status?

I too, would like to know what UCSD's stats are regarding applications put on hold. (Put in hold today, OOS, complete 8/22). Do they usually hold x amount of interviews for x amount of people placed on hold?

On hold. Complete 7/28 IS. I'll take it over a rejection.

Just got placed 'On Hold'. Requesting permission to join the "Hold Club".
IS. Complete 08/08.

I just barely got my "On Hold" email as well so it sounds like they are sending a lot of them out today. OOS though so I can't hope for too much past "On Hold" haha

Put on hold as well. IS 70 LizzyM. Seeing all of these people who are put on hold makes me wonder, who doesn't get put on hold? Who are these superstar applicants haha

Though I will keep refreshing my inbox since this seems like a mistake?

Placed on hold as well, anyone aware of the turnaround with that. I know uchicago usually is good with that

hold... any likelihood of interview invite? never knew UCSD put people on hold

On hold as well. OOS, complete in July. Seems like a bit party I'm joining here!

Also on hold....super bummed. Does anyone know if the rumor that UCSD doesn't prefer its grads is true? I'm also curious about the likelihood of getting an interview after a hold. Also, does anyone know if UCSD holds you does it mean your chances for "harder" UCs are shot?

Idk about your first point. With regards to your second question, I'm assuming chances are low. Look at all these applicants. And with regards to your last point, the only two "harder" ones are UCLA an UCSF, and I doubt the admissions committees even know if you were put on hold. So I don't think it makes your chances "shot."
