I completed my first bachelor's in a non-science major with a 2.21 GPA (yes, OUCH -- I won't go into details on here why) over five years ago. I did take numerous of science classes and the majority of the bad grades were between these courses and my major's courses. However, I recently finished another bachelor's degree in a hard science (comprising of ~90% science courses) with a 3.7 GPA and a 512 MCAT, with very strong ECs. I am currently taking more advanced science courses while in a research fellowship. I know my combined GPA is not over a 3.0 because my first degree's GPA is pulling it down. Will I be screened out of the secondary?

They won't screen you out for secondary. They will send you secondary but you have to check if you meet the minimum criteria. (as far as I know)

I'm curious to hear what you guys said for your last secondary question (the long one). I have written about 5 essays, none of which I'm happy with, and I'm at a standstill as to what I should write about. What did you guys do?

I took the prompt to mean write less about extracurriculars and more about upbringing, while still answering the "why medicine" question. I covered stuff like where I grew up as a kid, the diversity of my schools growing up, my parents' influence on my decision to pursue medicine, and my major hobbies, and made sure to relate each piece back to what I'd learned about medicine or how it developed my motivation for medicine.

Hope this helps. Maybe you can frankenstein some bits and pieces from your other drafts or from a diversity essay for this.

Hey @REL, sorry in advance if this has been covered somewhere else in the thread but are you able to tell us approximately what percentage of applicants who get 'AORTA' end up getting interviews?

awesome question, would love to hear too! But don't you mean EFI? If I am not mistaken AORTA is the committee that reviews your application.

I am IS, High GPA > 3.9, Decent EC, volunteering, Research, co-author. Low MCAT < 500. I saw that UCF COM have screening filter for MCAT 500.
Is there anyway possible that I could just submit and update later with my January MCAT. Will adcom consider my application.

I anticipate somewhere in the neighborhood of 2k EFI, over the last three years we have averaged 425 that we interview, so it is just under 25%.

You can submit an update but it probably will not work out well. We say that we do not accept the January scores and that is mainly because our final interview invitations are usually make before the January scores are released.

Thanks for the stats, really puts the perspective on expectations for ii. Is the EFI solely based on the applicant meeting minimum stats or is it more thorough like reading the essays? I was in assumption that basic filtration by stats happened with the secondary.

@REL Would you consider an mcat 2015 score around the 70th percentile to be considered competitive as an OOS?

EFI is a deeper dive into display of consistency of medical motivation and community, plus teamwork and leadership.

Over the minimums makes you a candidate, we don't consider state residency in the process. All have to meet same standards. The only time state residency comes into play is upon acceptance and keeping the 75/25% class ratio.

Completed super early in the cycle in early July. I am OOS though so it's a long shot anyways. Anyone know if they do silent rejections?

EFI today. Submitted 08/22. Glad to hear some updates.

Hello!

Just submitted my AMCAS and am waiting for an MCAT score.

I cam here looking for the secondary materials to start them just in case they allow me to do them.

Good luck to everyone!!

Do you get email or phone call for an interview?

I was EFI (submitted 8/14 and EFI 8/25) and then I checked today and that status seems to be gone. Shoud I be nervous? (I am feeling nervous!)

**Edit: EFI just reappeared...really weird

The Twilight Zone!!! So what really happens on the even hours of the day for approximately 5 minutes is that the system refreshes itself. During this time there can be a 1-5 minute period when the status is missing.

Did any instate students receive II recently?

Finally got AORTA - EFI status! Hoping for an II.

EFI today too! Would you mind sharing when you submitted/complete. I submitted my secondary early September and thought I was very late to the game.

I received my II yesterday. Traditional student , IS, LizzyM~71. Secondary submitted July 20. I am excited to be interviewing at UCF in the middle of October. Is there any advice anyone can give me for the interviews?

by any chance do you know what date your status changed to EFI?

I submitted early September too (9/02/2016). Hopefully we get that II soon!

lol 9/3 for me! I know that chances are still low even with EFI (~15% get interviews?), but it didn't stop me from jumping for joy :soexcited:

Does anyone know how comprehensive the initial review that led to EFI is? As in did the AORTA team read through the entire primary, secondary, and LORs? I know it sounds like a silly question, but a lot of schools just do an "initial review" (mostly based on stats) in which everyone gets thrown into a supposedly "smaller pool" of applicants.

Could someone please post a link to some helpful interview tips?
Also, does anyone know where I could find school-specific interview help? Thanks!

Does EFI just mean you met the minimum requirements for the school? Or do they actually do a more thorough review? I got EFI status, but I'm not really sure how meaningful that is?

Hi I asked the same question earlier, this is what REL mentioned who is in UCF's admin I believe:
EFI is a deeper dive into display of consistency of medical motivation and community, plus teamwork and leadership.

He/She added that less than 1/4 of the EFI applicants get selected for II if memory serves correct.

My way of thinking about it is that you can't get an II without being EFI first... Just tab it up as a small moral victory while still realizing that an II is far more difficult to get and not at all guaranteed just because you have reached EFI status. Regardless, it is still a hump you have to pass on your way to an II so be glad you have at least not already been rejected lol
Actually I got an II twenty business days after submitting my secondary without them ever changing my status to EFI.
