2016-2017 University of Central Florida Application Thread

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So the adcom review for actual II a focus on actually comparing yourself to others every week in terms of motivation/EC's, metrics, both? Do metrics not matter as much after EFI?

For the activities questions (Regarding clinical MEDICAL volunteering, shadowing, or medical work experience, do you have any NEW or RECENT information that is NOT already included in your AMCAS application?), did anyone interpret this as meaning experiences, regardless of how long ago it was, NOT listed on AMCAS? Or does it only pertain to new experiences you've been committed to in the time between AMCAS submission and Secondary app submission? I have a transformative experience that I spent two summers involved in (though it's been many years) but had to omit it because I was already capped out at 15.

Hmmm that's interesting. But it does say new or recent information, so anything that isn't already on AMCAS is technically NEW. I am assuming you're a non-trad applicant? Most activities are going to be from you're undergrad experience an onward and maybe some exceptional achievement prior to that. I'm sure if it's a meaningful and as you said, transformative experience, it wouldn't hurt to mention it. However, if it didn't make it into your 15 slots in activities and experience, it probably can't play THAT big of a role other than giving a little more info. Best of luck! and if anything, you can just call the admissions office.

Question for REL.

My friends and I are in the UCF Burnett Honors Medical Program. We are progressing nicely on the bench marks.

Our biggest hurdle would the new MCAT cut off. We have to score 512, with no subtest below 126.

Most UCF applicants do not have that hurdle, but we do.

Question: what if we score slightly less than 512, or below 126 on one subtest. Let's say 511 or 125.

We are out of luck? Go back to end of the line, join the regular pool applicants?

You'd have better luck with this question talking to your advisor I think... I'm saying this because I was in a similar program elsewhere and my advisor was my go to for answers

Does UCF accept January 2017 MCAT score as an update for Fall 2017?

Current student here. Taking a short break from studying...

Anyone know how many total acceptances are handed out over the admissions cycle?
If I'm remembering correctly, the numbers from last year were roughly something like this:
~5,000 apply
~2,500 are EFI
~400 are interviewed
120 matriculate

Does EFI just mean you met the minimum requirements for the school? Or do they actually do a more thorough review? I got EFI status, but I'm not really sure how meaningful that is?
It's meaningful. It's more than a basic screen for the minimum requirements. However you're selected for it, being in the EFI pool means you're one step closer to an acceptance.

If the experiences would actually give committee members more insight into your motivations, capabilities, etc., I would think you can include them here. The one thing that tends to annoys them is duplicating information from your primary or elsewhere in your secondary just to fill space. Don't do that.

Does UCF accept January 2017 MCAT score as an update for Fall 2017?
I'm only speculating, but I would say no. If you take the MCAT in January, you won't get your scores back until February, which is basically the end of interview season.

Could someone please post a link to some helpful interview tips?
Also, does anyone know where I could find school-specific interview help? Thanks!
Here's what I did the night before:
I reviewed my primary and secondary applications.
I spent about thirty minutes reviewing interesting things I liked about the school: https://med.ucf.edu/about/
I tried my best to stay calm and confident.

That's about it. I never rehearsed answers to ethical questions or did mock interviews. If you've gotten this far, you probably have a functioning moral compass and you can probably hold a conversation about yourself and the career you've chosen. The interviews are rather casual and relaxed. Nobody will try to trick you or look for reasons to reject you. You'll see what I'm talking about on interview day, but the whole process is designed to be as least stressful as possible. If you have any specific questions about the school, I'll try to help answer them here.

Still on Application being reviewed and I was complete August 24th-ish. I've seen others go past the 15 day mark to but I'm getting closer to 25 days. Stay patient? or valid reason to send an email/call?. @REL

Are you sure you met all of their minimum requirements? If so, I think it's reasonable to call or email about your status. They said 10-15 business days and it's been far longer than that. The complete email also encourages us to monitor our overall app status, so I am sure they will be happy to help. Good luck!

Just got the call right now!!! Super excited, the college looks AMAZING. Interview dates are early November and beyond. Complete 3+ weeks ago. Best of luck to all those waiting.
Congrats! Would you mind sharing stats? Also, IS or OOS?

@REL , is it possible for you to comment on the total number of acceptances handed out last cycle? Not number of seats in the class but the total number of acceptances that are handed out over the entire application process. Thank you.
I don't know the number, but I know that UCF is a little more conservative than most schools, which usually admit about double their capacity.

Hi @REL,

I have concern regarding interviewing at UCF COM. What kind of attire should I wear? I understand that we will be doing a lot of walking and was told to wear comfortable shoes. Does that include sneakers or comfortable dress shoes? If sneakers are preferred, am I advised to wear a full suit?

Also, what does EFI stand for?

Thanks!
I think they most likely mean comfortable dress shoes/sandals. If you are a woman, I know if you wear some type of padding for the back of your feet it doesn't get scrapped from the harsh leather. For men, loafers are extremely comfortable to wear so I would highly suggest going to your local store and seeing if they have a good price.

Definitely not sneakers. You can find some comfortable dress shoes for a good price and even if you can't, I'm sure you can tough it out. You've already made it this far to get an interview! Dress to impress! For interviews at most med schools, you're probably going to be walking for ~2 hours (max) since there is a lot of sitting and waiting. Best of luck!

II, yay! Secondary complete end of August, if I'm remembering correctly. LizzyM~72, nontrad, IS, reapplicant
love love love UCF

Hello all, just stopping in.

I am a deferred acceptance from last cycle and will happily answer any questions people have to the best of my ability. You will find the staff at UCF and REL in particular extremely helpful, but I know not everyone wants to ask the schools questions, so feel free to use me as a sounding board. PMs welcome and I apologize for any delay in my responses but I'll try to check in daily, but every couple of days at least.

Good luck to all!

Hi !
I have a 503 MCAT and a 4.0 GPA. Do you think I have a chance in this school with these numbers ?

Yeah that is what my status says, so I am guessing that means I'm put on hold, and they'll wait for my update ?
You're not on hold, you're part of the group that they deem eligible for an interview based on passing both minimum requirements and showing a strong interest/dedication to the field. They may invite you for an interview at any time....I believe it's ~5000 apply, ~4000 have EFI, of that 4000, ~800 interview and ~400 are accepted....so based on numbers and your status you have about 1/5 chance of being selected for an interview

I go to UCF for undergrad and according to my medical advisor ~5,000 people apply, 400 get interviewed and 120 get accepted. I am not sure about the number of applicants that are under the "EFI" status though.

The correct terminology is important. They matriculate 120, that is a different number than how many applicants will be accepted. Some will be accepted and matriculate elsewhere, so accepted will always be higher than the number they matriculate.

About half that many get interviewed and accepted.

I'm guessing this means the interviews this weekend will be rescheduled?

EFI today. It's no II yet - but it's the next step!

Complete 9/28

Would an LOR from a math professor fulfill the basic science faculty letter requirement?

also for this question, Do you have any information that you would like to share with the UCF COM Medical Student Admissions Committee that has not already been addressed in your AMCAS application? You may also use this section to include information about your family, personal interests, hobbies, and travels that have not already been discussed in your AMCAS application. Please provide details about NEW information for the Committee to consider to include information about your family, personal interests, hobbies, and travels that have not already been discussed on your AMCAS application.

could i write about new experiences/activities since submitting my primary application?

@REL I have a committee packet letter ( from 3 professors on pre med committee), plus two additional LOR . One is from a Dr. that I shadowed for a semester and one is from a history professor. Could these be considered character letters? Thanks!

Based on what you say you may need to assign an additional character letter (non-faculty) from someone that can give us their thought about who you are. It can be from someone that you work with or have known for awhile, peer, clergy, club or group, etc. Committee Letter = 3 faculty + history prof = 4.

No one really knows. u can be EFI for a long time only to hear back later on in the season like in January. There are many people with EFI statuses since July and August and are still waiting. but it's always a great sign if you get an II in less than a month after EFI.

I'm in the Lake Nona area and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for a restaurant! Im starving 🙂

I heard that the Nona Tap Room is good! Also, if you wanted to expand your distance, you can drive to Disney Springs or one of the Disney resort hotels for some of the best food I've ever had.

Does anyone have stats like mine and get an interview? I'm IN state.
This is my #1 school.

Science: 3.77
Cumulative: 3.44
MCAT 502
150 shadowing hours
120 ED volunteer hours

Is your status now "Eligible for Inteview" ?
Also do you have an interview for any other school yet?
