A. Describe succinctly the important experience(s) in your life which began the process that motivated you to enter the career of medicine.

B. Please explain why you are applying to the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine.

C. If you are a re-applicant to JABSOM, please complete the following additional essay. Describe what efforts you have made to further improve your application to the MD Program.

There are no assigned character limits but each prompt provides about one page of space.

Pre-secondary rejection

513 MCAT, 3.97 masters gpa, lower ugpa, OOS

Edit: I just spoke to their admissions staff. They were very nice over the phone. I was prescreened out because of my ugpa. They do not currently take masters GPA into account during their initial screening process, unfortunately.

Best of luck to everyone else!

Did you get an e-mail, or find out just by talking on the phone? when was your amcas verified? Thanks so much for sharing!!!

Good luck everyone!

I'm wondering also what you all are putting in the first essay. I am not sure what to do with this versus my personal statement because I feel I have answered the same question.

Lol I've put it off for 20 days for exactly this reason. Now that most my other apps are done I'll get to it...

Did yours not have a two-week deadline?

My secondary was given with a 07/14/16 deadline written on it, I had assumed that everyone had a deadline for the secondary

You know what. It doesn't! It says "to be completed by deadline noted on form" and then on the form it says "_________ (receipt deadline)" but the blank... Is blank. So I don't know.

I actually don't know what to do now. I didn't even know there was supposed to be a deadline. I really like Hawaii, but their secondary threw me for a loop. I think I'm going to call and see what they say.

Welp. Turns out there was a receipt deadline, it just never showed up when I opened the PDF on my phone (never opened the PDF on the computer). Oh well. I was really looking forward to applying here...

I have not received a secondary but paid the fee? Anyone else have this happen?
They screen secondaries pretty hard for OOSers. If you check last years thread there is a comprehensive list of how you get the "points" to receive a secondary.

How is everyone doing so far?

I know last year II started around August 11th, so hopefully within the next two weeks (?)

After I submitted my secondary (July 3rd) I got an email (July 6th) letting me know that they had received my packet.
Additionally, I had to submit syllabi to prove that my school includes labs in courses without giving extra credit/semester hours (ie a 3 credit Gen Chem DOES include lab). But they seemed more than willing to work with me on this issue!

Let JABSOM hear the prayers of our hearts 😍😍😍

From last years thread:

"Looking at previous years's threads, it seems like it works something like this:
>3.8 cGPA: +4 pts
>3.8 sGPA: +4 pts
+1 if >3.85(?) during most recent semester
+2 pts for 11 per section on MCAT, +1 for 10 on a section
+1 for ECs, +1 for research, +1 for publications, +1 for grad degree, +1-3(?) for Hawaii ties...

OOS need 16 pts for an II, IS need less, maybe... 12? "

It looks like you also need 16 points to even get a secondary. However it seems as though they are receptive to calls/emails to ask if you've been screened 🙂

What in the world... I got 10 points, there goes 150 down the drain...

Wow very slow! I just submitted (threw away) the $150, I'm OOS and lizzy 66 soooooo I hope they do a holistic review

Is anyone applying EDP to JABSOM? Or does anyone know the stats for past EDP applicants?

Anybody reject after secondary submit?
I think if you're given a secondary, you're on the II list. It says that on their website. You pay the $150 prior to the secondary for them to screen your app.

This is c&p from their FAQ:
Does everyone receive a secondary application or supplemental materials?

No. Upon receipt of your verified AMCAS application, your application will go through a screening process. Applicants who make the secondary screening cut will proceed through the admissions process and requested to submit supplemental materials and invited for interviews. Please refer to this website to view the latest entering class profile of number of resident and nonresident applicants to JABSOM, number of applicants interviewed, and number of applicants accepted.

OOS, Yes, i mean submitted a secondary and was rejected with no interview.

That's tough. Sorry. Like I'm sure you've heard, it's a lot tougher for OOS. Do you mind sharing your stats/ECs and what your connection to hawaii was?

I thought that meant that the "secondary screening cut" meant after submitting the secondary essays/materials? Someone can correct me if I'm wrong

So if I have a 3.77 GPA is that +0 points because it's not >3.8? Or is it +4 because it rounds to 3.8? Or is it something like +3 (which would make the most sense to me)?

Sidenote: I noticed in your signature that Mayo "re-opened" your app? What's the story there?? -- That sounds interesting!

I'm not too sure of the finer points of their system, so unfortunately I can't help there 🙁

I imagine you do get partial points for >3.7

And Mayo rejected me, and then "oh hey, we're re-opening your application, we'll be in touch"... good times 🙄

I got an interview here early September. OOS/canadian no ties
Anybody get an interview and would like to comment on how it went?

I interviewed earlier in the month, OOS as well. There's a student interview, faculty interview, and a final interview with the Dean of Admissions. Everyone was extremely friendly and the campus was gorgeous, and very small. If you have any specific questions feel free to pm me, though I'm not on here too often.

Almost 2 months since to submit secondary, NO invite to interview yet, anybody with me?

Is no secondary after paying the fee 6 weeks ago a good sign? Per the ol' adage, "no news is good news" amiright?!

Hi everyone,

I just received an interview from JABSOM (IS). Not sure if they send them out at the same time or what for the IS applicants
