🤐. I really hope you guys don't overthink yourselves and play out all your cards. I imagine schools choose a candidate because they believe that person will be a good fit. Now, whether or not they can see your social security number, I think if you are still up for grabs, they will extend an offer as they become available. Again, don't play out all your cards. There are +/- 25000 other candidates waiting in line.

I agree with your point. While this particular thread did generate some anxiety for me whether or not selecting PTE was a good decision, after reflection, I think that being honest and transparent and trying out the choose your school tool is the right thing to do. Spending all this time attempting to guess how a school may interpret a PTE selection or not is an exercise in futility (imho). We don’t actually know what they think and can’t know. I do plan to enroll in the school I have selected provided I don’t get off another waitlist. I would assume most others who are hoping to get off a WL are likely in the same boat, although there are a few who might opt to apply again if they don’t get off their desired waitlist, in which case they are in a different boat than I am. May 1st will arrive regardless of what you select, so here’s hoping we can get there without any new gray hairs.

For anyone who may be in a similar situation, if you were already accepted to a good school but waitlisted at your dream school (mid-tier) would you go ahead and secure an apartment at your accepted school? I don’t want to wait on something that might not happen and then struggle to find a decently affordable place, pet friendly, isn’t too far from the school, etc. However, I also know most housing deposits are non-refundable and you may be locked into a year long lease if I were to be accepted elsewhere. I was just curious if anyone was in a similar situation and had any thoughts/advice!

I'm in a similar situation and I decided to hold off because I feel that a lot of students are accepted late in the cycle and are able to find housing so it won't be too difficult to find roommates/housing later on. But I'd rather not stress about being locked into a lease and losing that flexibility.

Yeah I am in s similar situation - I also decided to wait . I am giving myself to May 15, and then making decision

but just IN CASE i am making a list of apartment complexes, talking to current students, and making the prioritized list of them in order of what works best for me.

Yes, I think there's plenty of time to wait until like June or so. A lot of leases I'm seeing are available for June/July 1st, so it just depends when you want to move too. I'm trying to do an August 1st lease I think.

Im actually in this exact situation. I signed a lease for an apartment and spoke with the landlord about my situation and i'm playing it by ear. PM me if you want to talk more about this!

Has anyone been in a situation or know of anyone who has been in a situation where you're waiting on a waitlist but get a job offer?

I'm hoping to score a research position in the next week or two but I'm not really too sure what to do about my waitlist. I'd feel terrible going through their onboarding process just to leave if I'm fortunate enough to get picked off the waitlist.

I’m in a similar position. I would wait at least till early May (almost there!) before accepting a new job.

Makes sense. Have you contacted your school about the predicament? To maybe try to see if they’d give you an earlier decision?

No I haven't. I figured its better to call them in the first or second week of May because we might hear some good news before then. I also think schools won't really be able to gauge the waitlist until early May anyway, so calling now wouldn't likely help. If you don't mind me asking, what school are you waiting on? I know some schools specifically tell us not to call them.

I tried to PM you but it wouldn’t let me!

Not to be the dark cloud to the silver lining, but I want to want y’all that there are some schools specifically telling accepted students they don’t have to commit to enroll by April 30th, or by any hard deadline at all. I know of at least two schools doing this. So WL movement may not happen until the last minute (we’re talking July) for a handful of schools 🙁

Damn .... what schools are those ?

yeah I see that the CTE deadline is mid-July for both of my waitlisted schools, that's annoying :/

CTE is the very last step. I think most schools put that 21 days before matriculation. The sky is not falling; there will be movement. Students cannot hold more than 1 acceptance past the 30th so that WILL free up seats. Let’s cease fanning the flames of fear. 🙂

Well, yes--I don't think any school can require CTE by 4/30. I believe AMCAS permits it no less than 21 days before the matriculation date, though admittedly it seems defining the matriculation date gives schools a fair amount of leeway. You cannot hold multiple acceptances after the 30th, but that is not the same thing as being required to CTE.

This. While schools are not required to require you to commit to enroll right on April 30 (and most have it as 21 days prior to matriculation), per AMCAS rules you cannot hold more than one acceptance after April 30. So even though you don't have to hit CTE, you have to withdraw from all but one acceptance. That is no different than previous years, and there will be movement.

Is there a way to enforce that?

I don't know if this is the right place to ask this BUT

I was just put on the waitlist for the only school I received an II at and am considering withdrawing and reapplying again next year. Do I need to report being waitlisted on (potential) future secondaries or just say I have previously applied given this wasn't an outright acceptance? Will withdrawing from the waitlist and reapplying blacklist me somehow?

Why don’t you just keep your spot on the waitlist and see what happens? You can still work on reapplying since you don’t know when you would hear back/if you’ll get an acceptance

Why don’t you want to go there ? Do you have strong negative feelings against it ?

None of my secondaries asked that specifically, but you may or may not come across one that asks. You won't be blacklisted by any stretch of the imagination. If you have to disclose your WL I think schools will just assume you never were extended an acceptance.

If you know you don't want to attend the school I'm all for you withdrawing your spot and letting it go to someone that does.

Withdrawing from the waitlist will not blacklist you from any other schools as they will have no way of knowing. With that being said, it's a year of your life and a lot of work to apply. I would seriously consider the opportunity cost of getting an MD a year later before making that decision.

Genuinely didn’t know that, thank you both for clearing that up for me! A lot of the communication from my accepted and WL schools has been unclear, so I was under the impression that on May 1st, people could still hold multiple acceptances.
