Was bored this morning and found the last years waitlist thread Waitlist Support Group 2017-2018

Skimmed through. We are already 2k replies and 50k views higher. I guess the abolished traffic rules were in effect late last year as well and there was at least one instance of poaching-matriculated student attends orientation and accepts offer to top choice program. Lots of last minute moves, scrambling, and lost deposits/leases/money for re-apps and jobs and employment. People getting interview invites while sitting on waitlist. Decent mid/late-june movement at top tiers and across the board. It was nice to see gyngyn giving updates on specific school movement. Sadly we don't get that anymore. I hope this thread continues churning out the good news in the upcoming weeks.

A funny post by user MareNostrummm:

Are schools more likely to give acceptances to people who don't hold any other ones versus people who might have another acceptance as indicated by their PTE selection?

There were mixed opinions on this earlier in this thread/cycle but I think as we move towards classes starting, offers will be extended to people with 0 As as these people will be more likely to accept and move on such short notice.

As frustrating as this waiting process is, it feels really nice to have this community of people who are all in the same/similar boat.

With that being said, I have a question about my chances. I’m on a ranked waitlist at a mid tier state school where I am an out of state student ranked in the mid teens with a class size of 175. I know my chances are still slim even though I’m relatively low on the ranked alternate list, but I just have no idea how many people actually get admitted off of these lists.

Unfortunately, there's no way for us to know. Just have to pray they move that much.

You should look at past threads for movement to get an idea. For me I know I would have been admitted already if the waitlist movement that happened the last few years happened this year so I am cautiously optimistic. However, in both our cases we have no idea how many they have admitted or how many will decline acceptances come late June/July when CTE dates start happening.

I have called my school a number of times. I dont think theres a negative connotation with asking, they know its all we can think about.

Is it really bad form to call the admissions office to ask for updates? I’m guessing yes.

I don't see why it would be bad form. It's your future, and you are in the dark. The worst they can say is that they can't tell you.

First MD acceptance to my top choice today guys! Am able to withdraw from my top DO school and from two other MD school waitlists now. Literally cannot believe it
Rosalind?? Any word on if there will be more movement I am really hoping to get off this waitlist as I’m sure everyone reading this is

Is it valuable to send an update informing the adcom that you started working on a research project or should the update be sent after it is complete? Thanks all!

Yup Rosalind! Not sure about more or less movement, but I imagine more because they have historically had a lot of waitlist movement

Congrats!!

Which DO school ?!

@gyngyn how would you interpret this my friend?

From Wake Forest ADCOM:

“Regarding the waitlist, we know as much as you do at this point. We might go back to it, we might not. There can be movement up until one week before classes start.”

Would u assume the class is full? Or are they just lost at this point?

It sounds like they are at their target at this point and just waiting to see if all those PTE's turn into CTE's ...or not.
We're all in the same boat.
The only admissions officers who seem perfectly calm and cheerful are the ones who just started this cycle.
At this point we are all going to ride this one out.

Their CTE deadline is on June 15th. Do you think that will have an impact on waitlist movement between now and then? Or more so after that date?

It probably depends on how many of their accepted students believe that the CTE is enforceable.

Are you saying that Wake Forest may not recind acceptances even if applicants do not CTE by June 15? Or that students will not drop other waitlists?

Does anyone have an active MSAR subscription that would be willing to let me check a school really quick? I have to make a decision but I lost my notes on the school... Please lol (you can pm me). Thx in advance!!!
** Mine expired 2 weeks ago 🙁

I don't know the conviction of any school regarding the hasty (and rather arbitrary) designation of a "CTE" date.
They may be strictly willing to dump you (I am aware of at least one school who plans to do this) or they may be flexible.

Students who would much rather attend a school where they are waitlisted may be willing to stay on a waitlist.

Hi @gyngyn anything worth reporting from your conference/meeting today? Thanks again for all your info thus far!
The meeting was held today but I can't say that we have any more information than we had before, sadly.

What is strict enforcement when they cannot pinpoint which applicants are violating these varying policies, whether they are within the suggested timelines or not?

I am pretty sure, if the school chose to do so, that it could run a report using the AMCAS CYMS tool to identify its accepted and WL applicants who have PTE'd or CTE'd at its school or other schools. It could then reach out to applicants to ask them to release multiple acceptances, or it could just rescind their acceptances. This is according to the AMCAS website.

Apparently, to the extent applicants are holding multiple acceptances (other than those who have been transparent with their schools and been granted exceptions) schools are choosing not to enforce at this time, thereby disadvantaging those of you waiting to hear. Clearly, at least at this point, the schools not enforcing care more about indulging those they have already accepted than those of you who are still hanging. If nothing else, this should make clear where those on the WL are on the food chain. 🙂

I've been lurking here for a while because I'm applying this year after reinventing myself. The waitlist thread is helping me realize that it's going to be a tough road.

I do think that schools must be able to see something because my cousin told me this past weekend that he had been accepted to my state school (close family ties) but also was accepted to his state school. After April 30 he sat there with both acceptances. My state school contacted him and told him that he needed to make a PTE decision. When he didn't his acceptance was rescinded. He was fine with that in the end because he didn't want to come down south  if he didn't have to.

So it seems some schools are enforcing the rules (or guidelines or whatever).

To hopefully take the feelings out of it, I like to think of med schools as a business. It is about their "revenue" (what they get from the app process), their image, and their future. Maybe this helps you? It helps make the WL wait less sad for me.

We have to play their games to get in. We have no other choice. It will work out.

@gyngyn did yesterday's meeting give you any indication of when movement may start? is there a chance waitlist movement may just not happen and almost all PTEs will eventually turn into CTEs? my school has had had no movement yet.

Wait list movement is happening. People just aren't posting here. If you browse school specific threads you will see people posting they have been accepted off wait list. I would also assume more people are coming off who do not post at all.

Also, facebook and twitter seem to be places people post recent acceptances from waitlist.

Best of luck guys!!

My schools alternate list hotline was last updated on the 22nd of May, so I’m guessing that’s the last time there was a major shift. Let’s all be patient and realistic looking into June!!!! I’m taking a practice mcat today to keep myself grounded and miserable .

Your signature quote thing is scarily accurate right now. Thanks for sharing though! Hope you are right.
