2020-2021 Rocky Vista University College of Osteopathic Medicine (RVUCOM-Colorado)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I've decided to add this school last minute bc I realized how good of a program it is but I'm having trouble with the following prompts because I feel like they are so similar? Wouldn't both require me to identify aspects of the program and how they apply to me? I don't want to sound repetitive. Does anyone have advice base don who they approached the two?

Why do you want to attend RVUCOM and become an Osteopathic Physician?

How do you envision you will help advance the mission and vision of RVUCOM?

#1: why do you want RVU

#2: why should RVU want you

Does anyone know A) does the CO campus have cadaver lab and what is exposure to cadavers? B) what is the average dress for students i.e. polo and khakis acceptable? C) approximately how much time are students spending on-campus? (I know attendance is generally non-mandatory but I saw something about guest lecturers and I know for labs etc...) If any current students or people who have information session fresh in mind could elaborate, thank you!

Hey guys! Im OOS and have a 3.7 cGPA. However, I got a 487 on my mcat. I heard they’re not looking at mcat at all. I did ER scribing, volunteering at hospitals, shadowing, research for 3 years, graduated with college honors etc. Do I have any chance at this school (Since they’re Not looking at mcat)? I also haven’t submitted my primary app

I don’t see why not, given the MCAT isn’t a factor.

How many hours of experience?

Their website says they aren't *requiring* applicants to take the MCAT, that doesn't necessarily mean they'll ignore a low MCAT. I'd be curious to see how many students got accepted w/o MCAT score. Most schools are still requiring it for an actual offer of acceptance. That being said, I wish OP luck.

current first year, so I can answer more questions if you have them

A. Yes, but not during phase blue (current Covid phase). Right now we are doing virtual anatomy lab which is lame (mostly)
B. They say there is a dress code, but there isn’t really for normal stuff. Obviously there is for SPs
C. Right now we are on campus for OPP lab (osteopathic medicine) and clinical medicine lab once each once a week. So like 4 hours a week. There is maybe 1 required lecture a week. The rest are recorded and can be watched live, but you definitely don’t have to

Do you watch all of the lectures and are they necessary to be successful on boards/exams? Or is it sufficient to study using third party materials which help with boards such as pre-made Anki decks, Osmosis, Sketchy, etc...?

How many hours of experience?

Atleast 200 hours of volunteering experience
Atleast 300 hours of scribing
Around 300 hours of research
I was also honors college advocate, assistant coach, tutor (this was like Atleast 200 hours nonclinical experience), peer staff member with admissions at my school (this program was alone 450 hours)

the only thing is my mcat ugh

Fair point. I don’t know why I assumed they just weren’t going to consider it at all in their decision.

it says it here that they are not requiring the candidates to take the MCAT this year due to COVID

Has anyone who submitted everything early September been marked as complete on the portal?

Right, but what is the definition of candidate? Is it the same as matriculant? And even if so, I still doubt there are a ton of students in that position. I was just voicing to OP to be cautious of assuming they're literally ignoring the score, especially this late in the game. I'd guess that about 25% of their seats are already filled at this point, if not more, and I'd be surprised to find that a substantial amount of those didn't have MCAT scores that met their averages. Just a thought, I could be totally wrong.

So sorry to hear 🙁 do you remember when you were complete?
I believe I got the supplemental fee email and paid it on 7/27. So it took them a little of 2 months to review me and reject. I didn't realize how sought after this program is! Is a large part because of location? Good luck to all of those still in the running! 🙂

For me, they have the most innovative program. My nana lives near the CO campus and she’s my favorite human, so that’s a huge plus for me as well.

Still playing around with this, and I suggest you really dial in on your learning style. Right now what I think works best for me and what I plan on continuing is going over the lecture powerpoints and then watching just the parts of lecture that are confusing (usually only 10 min or so out of 1 hour lecture). The main study tool I use is the Anking deck. I also have used boards and beyond and sketchy when the subject calls for them. I had to buy those separately.

Definitely going to try and nail down my learning style over this time period. It is kind of difficult since I am already done with undergrad and am not currently taking classes, so if you have suggestions on how to test things out please let me know.

Are there any resources that RVUCOM gives to its students for prep for boards and studying in general?

My LM is 54 so I’m for sure getting rejected
NOT TRUE! Don't put yourself down yet! LM only takes GPA and MCAT into consideration and you are so much more than those numbers! I've gotten II from schools that were "out of my league" and that's because many schools care about WHO you are more than stats. This process can chew you up and spit you out if you let it, and trust me, I've let it. DM me if you ever need to because we are all in this together 🙂. You've got this and are going to do great things!

You can take one of those learning style quizzes online. I’m visual and kinesthetic so listening to lecture is pretty much useless, but I know some people that live for lecture. I recommend starting there and just thinking about times you’ve learned best.

the TAs for each unit are awesome and provide great questions for in house exams. I don’t know of much RVU provides for boards, but I’m also a ways away from that

Oh great idea. I’ll try that out!

I’ll have to look into which things RVU offers for boards and whatnot. Also, how’s housing up there? I’ve been looking around for my wife and I and eve thing looks expensive. Any suggestions for apartments?

yeah Denver is expensive. My wife and I are actually renting a house in Parker that some previous RVU students lived in. I recommend utilizing the class Facebook page for housing when it gets a little closer to matriculation. That’s where we found our place!

Just to clarify--in the MyVista portal, if the dates of my LOR keeps changing, that's just a glitch in their system right? Does it mean anything else?

Congrats guys! If you don't mind, when were you marked complete?

Complete 7/27! But my Casper wasn't received until 9/9 I believe.
I finished my secondary on 07/27 but I wasn't marked "complete" until after I emailed them about it. I think it was 10/01 so I might be waiting a while longer....

Either today or tomorrow, but I'm gonna guess probably tomorrow based on previous threads. Fingers crossed!!! 😍
Okay! Should we check the portal in case we receive an update from there?
