2020-2021 UT Rio Grande Valley

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
It will be okay. They are probably focusing on getting their new MS1 class settled in and doing the review/interview for their small number of Early Decision applicants.
Early Decision Program applicants under review now. N applicants > 40 when I last snooped.

Wow! I’d imagine that number will increase since they’ve extended the EDP deadline to the 14th! Any idea as to how many seats they’ll fill through EDP?

It depends on how the ED applicants are: I would assume not all 40 will be interviewed, they have to be qualified applicants just like the regular applicant pool. ED at this school is only an option for those living in or originally from the RGV.

If the results of ED won't be announced until October 1st, does this mean they will interview regular applicants concurrently with ED applicants?

I don't know, because this is only the 2nd year this school has offered EDP.
Last year they finished all the EDP interviews and rendered a decision by July 25th, which was great and allowed those not accepted into EDP to then apply to the other TMDSAS schools.
I hope they will be as timely and considerate this year as well.

I think they will begin RD interviews before October 1.

The UTRGV SOM timeline (modified in response to the COVID-19 pandemic) on their web site says the deadline for EDP applications was 1 August. The deadline for all supporting documents shown on that figure* is 15 September; also, 1 October is given as the date on which EDP results will be announced -- *on that figure. *Note: "on that figure" is "it's-not-my-fault-if-I'm-wrong-speak," because the timeline at the TMDSAS page says that EDP results will be announced on 15 September. But the fine print on the TMDSAS figure does say "This timeline is subject to change." In retrospect, I see I haven't been helpful at all.

Update on the UTRGV EDP dates: The dates and deadlines at the UTRGV SOM link above are correct. https://www.utrgv.edu/som/admissions/_files/documents/timeline-pdf-for-website.pdf

Will not speaking Spanish hurt at this school?
This is mostly speculation, but I know the school is looking for people who 1) want to come back to practice in the RGV (underserved) (Source: their admissions website) and 2) who are altruistic and want to care for the underserved (Source: video interview with Betty on Youtube). While they are not specifically looking for people who speak Spanish, they do want people committed to serving the RGV and the underserved, which has a high percentage of Spanish-speaking people. If you do not speak Spanish and you express no desire in learning it while you are there, it could make them question as to whether you will YEET out of there once you graduate medical school.

Any word as to when UTRGV will start sending II? It seems surprising that they're so far behind the other schools.

Not surprising to me, they are always moving slowly compared to the other TX schools.
Plus, they will be assessing and maybe interviewing their Early Decision applicants first.

I don't know if this helps, but as someone who is slightly neurotic (and bored at home because I'm recovering from surgery), my video was viewed a second time yesterday. This could mean they are sending interview invites very soon, or it could mean nothing.

@1ightningz it won't keep you from being admitted, but it absolutely makes your life easier to be able to speak Spanish with patients.
In Brownsville for example 93% of the population is Hispanic/Latinx.

Didn't mean for my comment to make anyone angry, @MDFUTURE123 , I don't want current applicants to feel they have been passed over because they have not heard anything yet.
Dell, UTRGV, and TCU/UNTHSC among the TX schools have not yet sent out interview invitations this year.
Last year UTRGV sent out their first interview invitations by the end of July. This year they have quite a few ED applications to assess.
Once they know how many they are taking from their ED applicants, they will know how many of their 50 places remain to be filled in Regular Decision.

edited to correct that Dell sent out its first interview invitations Aug 6th

I can't speak for the other schools but Dell has started sending out invites. But as you said, it's still pretty early to start getting worried, especially with COVID slowing things down.

Keeping my fingers crossed that I get an invite again this year. My video hasn't had any views since submitting back in mid-June. My latest MCAT score had been pending so perhaps that's held things up. Good luck to everyone interviewing!

Hi I was hoping to gain some insight on how to answer this prompt, particularly how to explain the "how they integrate with each other" part

The UTRGV SOM educates future physicians with the following values in mind:
Patient advocacy
collaborative leadership style
community focus
cultural awareness
life-long problem solving

Choose TWO (2) of these values and explain their importance to you and how they integrate with each other. Please explain how this integration will impact your medical school education. (300 word max)

I've picked cultural awareness and a collaborative leadership style. How do these integrate with each other? I am confused by what they are asking me

It was tough for me to pick just two values but I narrowed things down to the values that I thought would best intertwine with each other and made sure I answered the prompt. I'd suggest writing out key things (bubble map or Venn diagram) for your two values and then see which items overlap/intersect. For example, cultural awareness and collaborative leadership style both encompass working with/leading/collaborating with a diverse group of individuals while being also being sensitive to the needs of the particular group of people you are serving. You could then write about how that integration will help you become a better physician, etc. If you have real-world examples I would definitely use them to "show" rather than just "tell". I hope this helps. Good luck during this application cycle!

I am not saying that my answer is what they are looking for, but I chose community focus and collaborative leadership. I then talked about what experiences led me to pick these values and why I think they are important in the “formative years” of medicine (aka medical school) so they can produce fruitful means of helping patients and communities post-residency. I hope that helps!

that helps a lot thank you!!!

This is very helpful! Thank you for the response and good luck to you as well! 🙂

For those who applied EDP, I'm curious as to how many views you've had on your video? I've had one since they received my MCAT score sometime yesterday. How soon after your app was complete & video was viewed did you hear back for an interview? Thanks!

I submitted my secondary application in mid July, and received notice about the interview last week. They also received my MCAT score last week, so that likely has something to do with the invitation. My video has quite a few views, but I’m not sure how many were from myself lol

If total cohort is 55 then only 13 students are from other parts of TX. Does this school strongly prefer URM or spanish speaking for the non RGV applicants?
Total cohort is 55, 25 from RGV, so 30 are from elsewhere. (Those UTRGV grads are part of the 25 from the RGV).

Speaking Spanish is not required, but absolutely helpful as so many of your patients may speak little English.

RE: Timing of IIs -- as @wysdoc has intimated above (way above), I don't think anyone should think they've been passed over by this SOM yet. If what I can infer from their published timelines is correct, they're conducting EDP and JAMP interviews right now. If you're not in those programs and see someone is looking at your personal video now or in the recent past, your application probably is in the hands of an AdCom member.

Have any EDP applicants heard anything since their interview? I am wondering when they will notify us of their decision.

I applied EDP and it appears one person has seen my video but I have not received an II. I wonder if they will be offering anymore II for EDP seeing as some people have already interviewed prior to the 3rd week of September which is when EDP interviews were scheduled to take place as per their website. I've improved my app since the last time I interviewed and I'm really hoping to get another shot. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Praying for you! 😀

How selective is the secondary? I am awaiting a MCAT score, so I'm not sure what they could have gone off except my meh GPA. And my app was sent on Friday, and secondary received late Monday afternoon. SOooo

Well , if they sent it without an MCAT score...yeah
Might as well get started on the secondary, it's kinda long 🙂

No news about an II on my end, but go to youtube and check the views on your secondary video. I never watched my video and youtube studio said that it got a view on 9/22. I don't know if it's an error, but if it isn't, that would mean that they're reading and going through our secondary apps right now. For the record I was complete there 8/26.

No views for me. Sigh...

09/28/20 No II yet. Applied early. My video has been seen many times. We shall see!

Their published timeline shows that EDP results will be announced on October 1 this year. I don't know if any direct communications happen earlier[?].

EDIT: My disapproval was premature, they did start notifying ED applicants this afternoon after all.
See next page for my update.

Not hearing any news from any ED applicants, I searched the UTRGV site today and see that they have silently and retroactively changed the text on their page about ED applications.

Now it says:
  • Applications via TMDSAS start on May 1, 2020, for the Class of 2025, entering July 2021.
  • Students applying to this program are restricted to UTRGV SOM only – no other application may be made until UTRGV releases the student. Admissions decisions are binding.
  • Process and review of credentials will begin immediately by a special admissions sub-committee, upon receipt of application – August and September.
  • The Admissions Early Decision Sub-committee (EDSC) will review and conduct interviews in September.
  • If accepted, the offer may be made with or without contingencies, at the discretion of the admissions committee. The acceptance offer is a binding contract.
  • If a student is not accepted, he or she is then released to the general application pool, on or before October 15th. The applicant is then able to apply to other medical schools before the end of the admissions cycle.
Well heck, the admissions cycle ends on October 30; so lame, UTRGV. I had high hopes for you when you made your ED decisions by the end of July last year.
