I interviewed 2 weeks ago. Never was asked about Spanish proficiency. (I can speak only little)
Received an A here, and was indeed asked about my fluency in Spanish. Did let them know I wasn't particularly fluent in it, but knew enough to communicate here & there.

For people who have received II or A, are you fluent in Spanish?
Interviewed a month ago. They did not mention Spanish, but it will be relevant since patient population here speaks a lot of Spanish. I’ve been brushing up on it for a bit now.

they won't reject you outright if you aren't fluent, but if you plan to study and work there its basically a must. UTRGV med Students will tell you its not super necessary but trust me its cap and they're just trying not to scare anyone from the school.

In reality, anywhere you go in the RGV whether it be the biggest most metropolitan hospital to the most rural free clinic (especially free clinic) there will be Spanish-only speakers and you will not always have a translator or nurse to help you. In fact, I've seen that many places basically never use hospital-given or electronic interpreters because 90% of the staff are Hispanic and speak Spanish, so you will often find non-Spanish speakers having to ask nurses or colleagues to translate or translating themselves with their phones etc. Just a heads up.

Does anyone have any insight into the yield? I have an II and not from the valley but I really want to go but im scared im competiting for like 3 spots out of hundreds of people. Would you say it's around 10%

Also do they only match enough to hit 50 students or is it usually more?

For OOS they take like 2-3 people. So it’s low yield. The website has class profile and their class size ranges from 50-60

if you’re application and goals aligns well with the mission of UTRGV’s then you should try. OOS is 2-3 people the last few years, so that’s pretty low yield.

Im not OOS! Im in state TX applicant. Im just not from the valley nor do I speak spanish (I do speak other languages though!) I just wanted to know if it was still likely

they won't discriminate if you don't speak spanish if that's what you're asking

Nice thank you, does anyone know how many people they offer acceptances to? I know they have 50-60 spots but I was wondering if they offer more acceptances then that
Unfortunately UTRGV is pretty low yield. They have class profile pages on their website for previous classes and they interview about 450-500 for ~50 spots. Usually about half are taken by those who are directly from the RGV, meaning those with no ties are competing for about 20-25 seats.

oh gosh that is anxiety inducing

Keep in mind out of the 500 they interview, most will probably rank them lower due to being a suburban campus, not having many good home residency programs, not being in a big city, and being fairly new, which means probably a good 200-300 people match elsewhere before the algorithm even works on UTRGV. So its not a 10% thing, in reality you're probably competing against 200ish people.

Has anybody received a pre match offer? If so, when did you submit and interview? I’m trying to figure out if I should call/email to check on my app status because the interviewer told me I should be hearing back by Thanksgiving but the wait is killing me!!!

There have been a few offers made in October and November. Remember this is a small class size of 55 so they don’t want to overdo it.
Don’t contact them to ask, “well, what’s taking you so long?”

I was able to schedule at 8:30 am, try around there!
Just to be extra clear, we need to receive a second email to schedule the online interview portion? Or is it okay to schedule as long as it is a date that is after your in-person interview? Thank you!

You can schedule as long as you went to in person before. They email some people (when they add a lot of vacancies) but as long as you did the group interview you are good to schedule
You are physically able to but they explicitly told my group to NOT do this. I suspect the open days are there for people who have received the email to schedule but just haven't gotten around to it yet, so if someone who doesn't have the email invitation signs up, it is taking an earlier interviewees spot.

I never got an email, but I saw an available spot and called Admissions and they said to just schedule it. Now I feel bad lol
Well if they said it's fine then not your fault! Maybe they were sending it as a formality early on in the cycle and just ended up deciding to mention in the in-person day that you're able to sign up anytime after the group. For what it's worth, my entire interview day got our emails telling us we could sign up for online literally in the middle of the group interview, so maybe they just stopped sending it out to later dates.

When is your in- person day? You can’t schedule the 1:1 interviews until after you attend it.

oohhhh, yeah nah they told Nov 1 to explicitly not do this, since they have to make room for the people who interviewed before us

I love UTRGV, but it's very interesting that they have a group interview and 2 online interviews. A small school doing it 500+ times in a year seems like a lot. I wonder how many people actually end up completing all interviews.
What do you love about UTRGV?

Does anyone know if UTRGV accepts update letters? I did not find anything on the website.

when do you get pre-matched for this school? interviewed 10/18 and online on 11/4 i believe. when do you hear back

Anytime between 10/15 and match day. The vast majority of applicants will not receive a pre-match though.

Maybe 4-6 weeks after the online interview …. but since the class size is small the pre-matches are few and far between.

do you mean they'll hand out around 200 acceptances or we're competing with 200 people for 55 spots? Kinda unsure how the match process works, do they match more people then they have in the class size? I'm just trying to see that out of 600 interiewees, how many people do they extend an offer or match to?

There is a video linked on the TMDSAS guide explaining how the match works. It’s a good time to watch it while you are waiting to hear from schools

UTRGV does send out prematches, but they don't specify how many. I was told by my interviewer that they tell TMDSAS that they "accept" 200-300 people. "Accept" as in UTRGV ranks them high enough that they will get in through match if the applicant ranks then high enough.

I was told by my interviewer that I will probably hear back from the school a week or two after Thanksgiving. I interviewed late October. So that is around a 4-6 week timr frame.

But the Admissions director said they won't send any more prematches till January. I don't know if that means they aren't on the same page or perhaps they send a few prematches (like 1 or 2) week to candidates they really like and that junaurary date will be a wave of prematches. Take everything I say with a grain of salt.
I would take the admissions director’s word as more accurate

I agree. I'm curious why my interviewer would say that. I also noticed in this thread someone said something similar. Maybe it's just a rouge interviewer!
Saw somewhere that last year they sent a wave of pre matches in Jan. Guess we gotta wait till after the holidays. Gotta love the looming sense of uncertainty for the holiday season. Yay 😀

Quick question, I attended group interview 2 weeks ago and when am I supposed to receive online interview invitation?
Solved: I called them and received invitation the next day. lol They are still scheduling late Oct group interviewees.

I got an email notifying me that there were slots available. I got the email around 1 week later from the group interview but I’m not sure the time frame for this time in the cycle. For more clarification I recommend reaching out to admissions or calling. I called them and they were able to answer me quickly.

For those of you who were invited to interview, what did you indicate your Spanish language proficiency is?

I do not speak any Spanish and personally know of a few others who were also invited without speaking Spanish.

Hi all, any tips for the two 1-on-1 interviews?
Make sure you read up on the interviewer’s research (if they have any), think of closing questions to ask the interviewers, practice with mock interviews, relax and be yourself. Be excited to tell your unique story and not a story that you think they might want to hear.

UTRGV called me the other day to make sure I will be completing their prerequisites (I'm currently a senior in college). I already interviewed. Is this good news? Do they ask to all or just people they really like?
If you are still doing prerequisites in final year they want to make sure you are trying to complete them rather than admit you and find out you dropped those classes. It depends on how many prereqs you still need to finish.

Its not an uncommon practice. Even Harvard asks the same of their applicants if they see any pending prerequisites.

Are there any current MS here willing to answer some questions about the area and curriculum?

Hi, I noticed that there is availability for online interviews but I have not gotten the email that it is okay to schedule, I should not schedule right?
