2021-2022 East Carolina (Brody)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats to everyone who has received an II!
For those who have not heard back yet, do not worry. I am a re-applicant who got to WL last cycle and did not receive an II until January.
Stats are not as significant when compared to your story and experiences for Brody - trust me. We got this 💪

I’m usually pretty good at taking things in stride but wow trying to stay positive is harder than I expected

Hey I sent emailed my interview schedule time request and haven't heard back yet. Did anyone who got an II receive the follow up email with the interview package after scheduling yet?

I’m a first time applicant and I received my MCAT score today. Unfortunately below 500, I’m still continuing with the cycle in hopes they see past my stats.

Update: I've been sent the email that my App is complete and the committee will begin reviewing it. And so it begins

Do we get another email after the "Applicant Gateway Activities Complete" email?

It seems that interviews are given out in tiers of MCAT scores. Higher scores will be interviewed first. I’m in your boat with a 499, I’m just going about assuming I’ll need to reapply next year and preparing for MCAT in March and if I get an interview then all the better. The worst than can happen is I don’t get in but I’ll be prepared next go around. Bringing your score up 10 points is very feasible. But to ease your mind, I know many people who didn’t interview until January and got in.

I don't know if this is true. 100th percentile MCAT but no II love from Brody so far.

Yield protection is a meme. I get an interview there last year.
Sure to an extent, but as the trend shows they are receiving more apps but interviewing less people. I believe yield protection is valid if one does not “fit” the typical metrics/mission/experiences Brody students have.

Also it’s WAY too early to be anxious about not hearing back! They are a smaller team but with them already starting interviews about 2 months earlier than last year, I assume they will be interviewing through Jan.

They probably interviewing people for early decision right now and won’t get to others until after October 15. Anyone receiving acceptances before oct 15 is early decision anyways.

If that's the case then big RIP lol...

current M2 at Brody. let me know if you have questions and I'll do my best to answer them. good luck to all - this process is a long slog but you can make it out the other side no matter the outcome

How are the students doing at Brody? Do you feel the stress level is typical for med school?

I'm going to assume you mean "how are they doing emotionally." I think my class is doing pretty well, which is to say, we're all stressed and a little cynical but not on the verge of mutiny, and we still manage to have some fun here and there. for us, it's really nice to be back in person after nearly everything was remote last year - I can't speak for everyone but I'm still basking in how cool it is to actually be able to talk to my classmates face to face.

I'm not as close to folks in other classes as some of my classmates are, but I think the M3s and M4s are pretty much just doing their thing. the M1s had a tough first exam this year (not sure what made it so tough) and were pretty stressed about it. they just had their second exam this Monday and I haven't heard yet about how that went.

I think the stress level of my class is probably pretty typical, but it's hard for me to say what "typical" is because I only have the experience of being a med student at this school to pull from. I don't think we're under unconscionable levels of stress. the M1s are, I think, more stressed than I remember us being at this time last year.

here at Brody, as you may already know, we only have exams every 3-4 weeks, but they cover everything at once. so exam week is very stressful but you get the tradeoff of not having to feel that intensity of stress very often. some people hate the concept but I've grown to like it.

Has anyone in Eastern, NC had luck finding opportunities for volunteer clinical exposure during the pandemic? Suggestions welcome. I’m able to find volunteer opportunities but none that provide direct patient clinical hours.

Does anyone know when they start sending out acceptances? I know their website says oct 15 but I’m wondering if theyre slow to start sending them out or if I should be anxiously checking my phone!!

For reference I interviewed during the first week of interviews

I remember during my interview with them this year they were looking to have only sent out 30% of their acceptances by late November and that the large majority of their movement will be in 2022. That's all if my memory serves me correctly.

That means I might still have a chance for an interview and acceptance. 🥰

They've sent out 16 acceptances as of today

I just received an II! Semi-complete 9/20, but my RCN was about to expire so I needed to update that before it was considered fully complete. GPA 3.6, MCAT 511 re-applicant. Interview should be scheduled for either 11/9 or 11/17.

Can current students share the attendance policy? Are we expected to attend classes daily in person? I have a long commute and just wanted to plan accordingly.

so, yes and no. most lectures aren't mandatory, but a lot of small group/flipped classroom/lab stuff is. therefore, even though you don't have to attend everything in person, you very well might have to be physically present for part of the day every day of the week in a given week.

for example, looking at the M1 calendar for this week, they had an exam Monday, ethics small group on Tuesday afternoon, foundations of doctoring small group on Wednesday afternoon, and anatomy lab both Thursday and Friday morning. I will say the M1 calendar is a bit more in-person heavy than the M2 calendar due to having anatomy, histology, neuroanatomy, microbiology, etc. - there have been a handful of weeks as an M2 where I haven't had to show up to campus at all - though I'd say that's not the norm: most weeks I can expect to have to be physically present at at least one or two things, if not more, but it's much rarer to have something every day. today, for example, I don't have anything mandatory in person and will be chilling at home studying, as I don't watch lectures live unless attendance is required.

that being said, a long commute has an impact on things besides mandatory classes. if you want to attend meetings for any student-run groups, physician talks and panels, etc, they'll be either at lunchtime or during evening hours, and they might be on a day when you otherwise wouldn't have had to be on campus. and, during second year, the majority of M2s sign up to have a cubicle study space in the student area on the second floor, and a fair amount of interaction with fellow students happens there. therefore, many M2s spend all day at Brody anyway even if they don't have mandatory class that day. it's certainly not required that you get involved in any of that stuff, of course - I personally didn't want a cubicle and have been fine without one. but it's worth thinking about.

Thank you so much for sharing your personal experience. I live 1 hr away, and if Brody and I are matched, I will consider having a place to stay a few days a week. I am not planning on selling the house and relocating my family to Greenville.

Don’t they usually offer around 120 acceptances before they fill a class. I think that’s what I’ve seen in the past.

an hour's not too bad. I know a couple of folks who have tried to (or continue to) commute from 1.5 hours out and that's starting to push it a little.
