2024-2025 Michigan

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Anyone with an II, when you're going to fill out the MIC they ask about the faculty members/departments that intrigue you for further collaboration. Are you writing like an in-depth explanation/back story as to why you want to collaborate with this person/department, or keeping it more brief?

This is kind of silly but I can’t find where to access the MIC

Man, this school really loves their Ivy League graduates too in addition to their home school U M Ann Arbor
geez, students from ivy leagues are nearly half of their interview pool! 🤓

also non ivy normal LM and got an interview so another +1 on that it’s definitely possible. i would like to think it’s due to mission fit, Umich doesn’t have a generic one and i definitely hammered that match between me and the school in my secondary in every essay

If you are a mission fit then shoot your shot. It is still before Labor Day.
Eh you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take. If you have the money I say do it but according to data reported by umich your chances are pretty slim for this school submitting this late. If you really want to go to umich I’d say go ahead if you’re indifferent I’d put the money towards a different school at this point (can even be a similarly ranked school)

I have a question about the MMI section of Michigan's interview. They give 6 minutes per response - should we be leaving room for follow up questions? I ask because I know some schools that ask for a 5 minute response with no follow up space (but they explicitly said so in the email).

Generally you want to limit MMI responses to 2 minutes, so I’m assuming it’s designed as 6 minutes so there is adequate time for both you and the adcom to ask follow up questions!
Oh interesting. I’ve had practice where the answers were closer to 3-4 minutes, with 4 minutes to discuss (for the standard 8 minute response). Thanks for the info!

My primary was verified on the 15th of August. I know Michigan values early submission. Would it be a donation to send in my secondary at the time? 😔

I am thinking Michigan only reads August applications when they cannot find enough matriculants from June and July. Plus, less than 10% are picked up from August applications. Anyone from August submission got II ?

Unfortunately, I decided not to apply to Michigan. Apparently according to their last 5 year averages, they didn’t interview a single Texan 😔

You are misreading the document. They only included the top 10 states. I’m from a state not on that document either, and received an interview in the first wave.

Oh you are absolutely right! That's on me. What is your opinion on submitting to Michigan in August alongside the fact that I am an OOS Texan? I am under the impression that a lot of schools dont prefer Texans due to us having 14 in state schools and our own application system. (Also, I’m not sure how competitive my stats would be at Michigan this late in the game and these applications have been killing my wallet).

You are lucky as a Texan. so many and lots of good schools. I haven't applied a single one due to its own app system, also no time.

If the money is a concern, I don’t know if I would pay the fee here. It’s almost September and they only interviewed a few people that submitted in September last year.

However, if you genuinely love the school and its mission, and think you’d be a good fit, there’s zero shame in shooting your shot. It’s an insanely good school, and your odds are 0 if you don’t apply!

I'm probably going to keep it under 250 words

Is this not by primary submission date? they don't specify but I vaguely remember seeing this on some reddit thread, obviously could be totally off though
am also not entirely sure but I do recall reading this somewhere, too

I got one two years ago, but didn't get an acceptance with the feedback of "I don't know why you didn't get in... your interviewers loved you and said you were the perfect fit."

As for the primary submissions versus secondary submissions in June/July vs August on that PDF, I am inclined to believe it is primary submissions.

I decided to check previous year threads, and last year at least 5-6 people posted on SDN that they received interview invites and that were complete in September. I highly doubt that that high of a percentage would be frequenting SDN and post about it (out of the 8 on average that the PDF says are interviewed for September). Hope this makes sense. However, *I am not an adcom and cannot confirm this information

What does the being completed early being good mean for people completed really early, who haven’t gotten an interview yet. Do they still go over our application again and it still is to our advantage we were completed early? Sorry for the word salad

do you get a confirmation email when you complete/upload all the required documents prior to the interview?

Yes, +1 OOS this morning! Never thought I would've gotten one in a million years T-T

Congratulations! 🙂

Hey what are my chances if I submit my UMICH secondary now with a LM of 69.2? I feel like i screwed up waiting this long.

If you have 75$ might as well. If you don’t submit it’ll be a no anyways, right?

Respectfully, I don't think it is worth applying to UMich this late in the season, especially with stats that far below their medians. UMich is one of the few MD schools that REALLY prioritize early applications, and even for someone with a 524 and a 4.0, submitting this late would be essentially a donation.

Source: UMich website. Left is applications received, middle is interviews, right is acceptances.
