2024-2025 Michigan

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Just finished interviewing here! Everyone was incredibly nice and supportive, and the interviews were very conversational. I cannot give specifics on any questions, but the MMIs also were not nearly as stressful as I anticipated. Very good experience!

also just finished, and i second all of this ^^
very impressed with the school 🙂

Does UMich send rejections during the cycle or do they hold off until the end to reject?

When you guys filled out your interview confirmation, did you just list the faculty and departments you were interested in collaborating with or did you write a paragraph about why you were interested in them specifically?

I personally did a paragraph explaining two faculty I would be interested in working with.

I also did two short paragraphs explaining two faculty that I was interested in working with and why

IS II this morning, reapplication, submitted 7/21, honestly freaking out because my stats are below their average
You have made it to an interview so it’s time to talk about you, not your numbers. Make it a great day

I'm not going to lie I'm also a little worried, as it seems they've already sent over half their invites, but I would still give it some time.

They're very careful about who they interview, which you can see from their 83% post-interview acceptance rate. I've already interviewed at some T10 programs and have heard nothing from Michigan, so it's not just based on stats.
also important to note that they have already received more than 10k apps--more than the last 2 cycles so definitely more applicants per interviewee slot

Yeah, from admit.org’s stats it’s clear that Michigan is the pickiest T10-T15 in who they interview, due to fit. The cycle is a crapshoot, and as many in the past have proven, not receiving an interview at Michigan does not mean your application is not competitive or good enough. Each school looks for specific things, and as outsiders it just won’t make sense to us.

Earlier today UCSF sent a pre-secondary rejection wave and many incredibly qualified applicants were among those rejected. As unfortunate as it is, even the strongest applicants can’t catch them all. Despite that, the fact you have interviewed at so many other schools speaks volumes to how incredible your application is… any school, including Michigan, would be lucky to have you!

Y’all I’m so worried I know it’s still early in the cycle but i can’t help but wonder where I went wrong
I can’t speak on Michigan specifically, but I can say that there are still plenty of opportunities for interviews across the board! Less than half of interview invites have gone out among MD schools, and some people end up with double digit interview invites despite getting their first II in October!

I know the wait is challenging, and I’m really sorry you’re going through this. Remember that you’ve worked super hard to get here, and I bet you that hard work will pay off in due time 🏆

It can only take one II to become a doctor. I’m crossing my fingers for you!

thank you so much for your encouraging words! I’m trying to stay positive and hopeful throughout this process but it’s so difficult knowing how much work I put into my application and yet silence from every single school I applied to 🙁 I won’t allow myself to panic yet, there’s more to come

Will there be more interviews sent out tomorrow given the holiday?
I'm not sure... I work at a research lab at the med school and didn't get the day off; but it could be different for office of admissions

Checked all the past SDN threads and in the last 6-7 years the As always came out at midnight or in the middle of the night, not sure what’s wrong this year. The only exception is 2017-2018 where they came out on the 16th instead.

did people get their trad interviewers' names beforehand? even day of?

Maybe they got their AM and PM mixed up this year? 🤔😆

Just checking in to ask, you haven’t heard back right? Really strange that they still haven’t sent anything when it has always come out on the 15th. Even if it was a rejection I feel like based on what the dean said we should have heard something by now so that’s why I’m asking.

+1 OOS II, was wondering if anyone could comment on the general vibe of the interview and whether the 6 short interviews are open or closed file?

The general vibe was very friendly! They make it a point that they want you to be as comfortable as possible, and out of all the schools I interviewed at they did that the best. In regards to MMI, I think it's closed file. TBH it seems your background doesn't matter too much with the MMI, but more of your response.
