Question for any current students, more so looking for advise. I have a very rural focused application. If I put twin cities as my number 1 for selection, would this lower my appeal as a rural applicant since Duluth and St. Cloud are the rural focused sites. Or does it not matter based on your selection

If you look through last years threads, there were a few students that were bounced between Twin Cities and Duluth if they thought you’d be a better fit for Duluth but had selected Twin Cities as your number one. Personally, I’d choose the campus that fit my application best to give me the best possible chance of getting in. Duluth students are only in Duluth for about 16 months before the entire class is integrated for the rest of the four years. Good luck!

At some point in the interview process, I was told the Duluth campus plans to expand local clerkship slots and have most/all students stay past second year. Certainly could change, especially when that might start (won't be for the Class of '28), but worth noting and you may want to inquire with admissions where that stands at this point.

Hello! MS4 here, attended Twin Cities campus for preclinical. There have been a lot of changes to the admissions process in the last several years, and I don't think it's possible to say for sure how exactly your campus ranking impacts your chances. I would personally recommend ranking true to your own preferences. If one campus likes your application, your ranking of the other campus will not preclude you from receiving an acceptance. If you are a rural-focused applicant, being open to Duluth/St. Cloud is a good idea for maximizing chance of acceptance, but I think it is completely fine to rank TC first.

You’re right, they have mentioned working towards that several times. Duluth is already well equipped for primary care clerkships, so I’m guessing the challenge is acquiring good non-primary care specialty rotations. Hopefully the major new hospital upgrade helps with that. It would be great to get rural MN non-primary care specialty access!

On the UMN med school website, it mentions rolling admissions starting in October - has this changed since last year?

Appreciate the response. I only ask because I have a strong rural focus with rural research and clinical experience. However with my son remaining in TC would be ideal. So wasnt sure what to do since my application is stronger for Duluth/St.Cloud

want to prewrite this since i’m all caught up but they literally change their prompts every year

As an OOR applicant who interviewed last year, I do not get my secondary till 7/31. So maybe tomorrow will be the day. Either way, just seems like Minnesota is slower than some school.

did in state applicants receive their secondary?

MSTP applicants got an email saying our application was received and thats about it lol.

It essentially just says "We are beginning screening and it takes a long time" lol. no secondary, no campus selection
interesting. I dont remember them sending that out last year

Accepted to UMN Duluth and starting this month. Let me know if you have any questions! Dm me

For my fellow MSTP applicants these are the prompts (note that they do not let you apply to both MD and MD/PhD):
  1. List University of Minnesota faculty members you would be interested in potentially working with for your PhD studies in our program. A list of names is sufficient, and they do not need to be in any rank order. You may provide up to 12 names. (300 character limit)
  2. Describe the area(s) of research you are interested in pursuing during your PhD training and how your interest(s) align with the research opportunities available at the University of Minnesota (700 character limit)
  3. What factors, either personal or professional, influenced your decision to apply to the University of Minnesota MSTP? (500 character limit)
  4. How does your background (identity, past work, leadership, socioeconomic status, first generation status, disability, etc.) inform your understanding of and support our existing initiatives in justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion or inform new ones? (700 character limit)
  5. OPTIONAL. What other pertinent information would you like to bring to the attention of the MSTP? This is an opportunity for you to discuss an aspect of your physician scientist journey that you have not already presented in your application. You may also update us with any current experiences that were not included in your AMCAS application. (700 character limit)
  6. OPTIONAL. You may upload a copy of your curriculum vitae or resume.

@wysdoc

Are people uploading their CV? I haven't seen any other schools ask for this before, so I'm not really sure the pros/cons of doing it.

Is there any OOS who hasn't received a secondary invite yet? Do they do IS first then OOS?
