2024-2025 Oakland (Beaumont) OUWB Secondary Essay Prompts:

OUWB admissions tracker

1. Oakland County has a diverse patient population with a health equity divide that has resulted in a vulnerable group of patients that are underserved. Select an obstacle that primary care physicians face that work in these types of communities and discuss possible solutions. (400 words)

2. Please select one or more of OUWB's values and describe any experiences (personal, clinical, and/or service) you've had that align to those values. The values of OUWB are integrity, innovation, inclusion, excellence, accountability, and respect. (400 words)

"Please select one or more of OUWB's values and describe any experiences (personal, clinical, and/or service) you've had that align to those values. The values of OUWB are Collaboration, Compassion, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Excellence, Professionalism." 400 words This prompt updated July 5 based on applicant reports

3. In clinical bioethics you will learn how we all have to make complex decisions that sometimes do not match our personal beliefs. Accordingly, is it important to do what you believe is right or what you have been instructed to do? How would you approach this dilemma? (400 words)

4. Optional: Is there anything you want the admissions committee to know about your qualifications for medical school that are not already represented in your application materials? For example, if you have already graduated, briefly summarize your activities since graduation.
Note: This space is provided for new information only, not to promote qualifications already highlighted in your other materials. (400 words)

Good luck to all applying!

OOS secondary received, complete 6/17

Q1. Oakland County has a diverse patient population with a health equity divide that has resulted in a vulnerable group of patients that are underserved. Select an obstacle that primary care physicians face that work in these types of communities and discuss possible solutions. (400 words)

Q2. Please select one or more of OUWB's values and describe any experiences (personal, clinical, and/or service) you've had that align to those values. The values of OUWB are integrity, innovation, inclusion, excellence, accountability, and respect. (400 words)

Q3. In clinical bioethics you will learn how we all have to make complex decisions that sometimes do not match our personal beliefs. Accordingly, is it important to do what you believe is right or what you have been instructed to do? How would you approach this dilemma? (400 words)

Q4. Optional: Is there anything you want the admissions committee to know about your qualifications for medical school that are not already represented in your application materials? For example, if you have already graduated, briefly summarize your activities since graduation. Note: This space is provided for new information only, not to promote qualifications already highlighted in your other materials. (400 words)

q3 might be one of the harder secondary questions i've answered this year. too much thinking for my liking 🤣

For question 1, even though I have very minimal primary care experience, would it be appropriate to draw examples and anecdotes from my own clinical experience (derm) and try to relate them to that question?

Optional: Why did you choose to apply to OUWB's Early Decision Program (EDP)? Please explain your ties to OUWB.

I didn't apply to OUWB Early decision but can I talk about my ties to Michigan here?

I read that first question one wrong because it a lexical ambiguity. I thought it was asking what issues work not what issues physicians that work with those with populations face.

Also, I see Oakland started adopting CASPer into their secondaries.

But Oakland isn’t even on the list of schools to send the casper score to. How would we even get it to them?

I sent an email to the admissions office about this and they said this essay is only for the EDP.

@wysdoc

The second essay shows different values for me. I'm not sure why?

"Please select one or more of OUWB's values and describe any experiences (personal, clinical, and/or service) you've had that align to those values. The values of OUWB are Collaboration, Compassion, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Excellence, Professionalism." 400 words

I actually wrote my essay using innovation and a couple of others looking at this thread, but luckily, I double-checked the prompt before submitting.

They must have gone back in and changed their values, because I specifically was completing the essay on accountability, but the list has changed now. It would have been nice for them to email everyone about this because I spent time working on the old list.

@wysdoc
Please update the prompt for question 2 and put a note hightlighting the change -- confirmed it did change. 😕 What a strange thing to do to us! They updated their values on their website.
and thank you to @shambho for pointing this out before I submitted the original essay!!

Yeah, it’s easily missed. I thought many other people may mess this one up if they weren’t paying attention

question about LORs - I only have a committee letter in AMCAS but it has 4 LORs in it. Would this satisfy Oakland's requirements? Bc they said committee letter only counts as 2/3 of the minimum letters but not sure I'm understanding it correctly.

I'm in the same boat. It will have to work lol

Pretty sure that's where the secondary portal comes in where you can elaborate.

OOS secondary received 7/1 and submitted 7/3
I had the pleasure of touring this medical school last year when I still lived relatively close by. I was very impressed with the overall program, facilities, and staff. I was also able to speak to the admissions staff in April (maybe), since I was rejected last cycle. I have had some great experiences over the past year that I hope the ADCOM enjoys as well.

I got an email saying they have recieved my application on July 1st, but I haven't yet got a secondary. I meet all the minimum requirements they have posted on their website. Do we need to assign letters of rec before they send secondary?

I guess not...?

It just seems like most applicants can't answer this from an experience. Why would people <30 yrs old have been in this position, unless they were in the military or something? Or belonged to a conservative religious sect that has values which don't align with modern humanitarian medicine? Or had ALREADY worked as doctors?
I don’t understand why this has to be a dichotomy. Unless they’re talking about an extreme like being ordered to do something that puts patient health at risk, which I doubt since the q is about clinical bioethics.

I took it as more of a hypothetical question since they are asking what would you do. I chose to talk about the team and leadership environments I have experienced in the past. I told of how leadership would make a general plan and then anyone could submit their ideas. If an idea was better than what leadership came up with, it was used. I shaped the essay around discussion and decision-making as a group. Just my thoughts

Same! Not sure if there's anything I should be doing rn + my letter packet was uploaded to AMCAS before I even submitted my primary.

@ncpremed245 @alisonbechdel Check your spam folders! On gmail, I received the secondary on 7/2 at 6:13am Pacific Time with the subject line: "OUWB School of Medicine:Supplemental Application Invitation". I just noticed this a few days ago, so it seems its a common issue for Gmail users!

How many did you guys addrsss in the following prompt:

Please select one or more of OUWB's values and describe any experiences (personal, clinical, and/or service) you've had that align to those values. The values of OUWB are Collaboration, Compassion, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, Excellence, Professionalism." 400 words This prompt updated July 5 based on applicant reports

I did two of them with small anecdotes/explanations

Do you think trying to fit all of them would be too much/ not allow me to give an adequate explanation?

yes, lol, whats the point of trying to fit them all into the one prompt? You can probably show the ones you missed in the other prompts

Did you guys include anecdotes or just use reasoning to answer the following question:

In clinical bioethics you will learn how we all have to make complex decisions that sometimes do not match our personal beliefs. Accordingly, is it important to do what you believe is right or what you have been instructed to do? How would you approach this dilemma? (400 words)

Mostly reasoning. I used a hypothetical also.

I haven't received a secondary invite yet and meet the minimum requirements. Should I be worried?

For the optional Q4, should I not answer it because I already talked about what I did in my gap years in my primary application? I can talk about it in a different way, but the Q specified not to promote qualifications already highlighted in your other materials so idk

Smart move would be to follow their instructions on only using it for new things.
