Although I'm thankful for a phase 2, the challenge is not necessarily with going through this process all over again, but instead with finding sites that fit with my situation. My wife matched in Colorado, and so I keep refreshing the late breaking news to see of more sites are uploaded that match my interests. We contemplated matching in different locations but after phase 1 we both agree that we value living near each other more. It shall be a fun and exciting week!

Do any of you know if the statistics for match are different in phase 2? Like, should we still aim for 15 applications?
I was told to cast as wide a net as possible. You don’t have to rank all sites in the end, and this way you will have more options to choose from. You aren’t paying for anything this time necessarily so do as many as you can/seems reasonable.

I will definitely be applying to both Casa Pacifica and JCCA !! Do you have any thoughts about what to touch on in application materials? And if it happens, how best to prepare for interviews with these sites? You can DM me if you fee better discussing there. Thank you for being so willing to help!
Hey! I tried to message you but it wouldn't let me- try messaging me and we can chat!

I'm becoming more open and okay with phase 2, thanks to these forums. It was hard not to see myself as a reject and thus all the sites on phase 2 as rejects too. Now the problem im running into are the lack of school psych accepting programs! I dont want to go to a school district, but most of the hospitals and clinics in interested in say "none" for school psych applicants allowed. Pretty frustrating. Still made a list of 24 sites I may as well apply to, including school districts... I dont want to just end up somewhere to be somewhere, you know? This isnt just a get it done it doesnt matter type thing... (#wordvomit)

Same problem over here! Whyyyyy.

I’ve actually been emailing places to ask if they would consider me.

Those are two sites I didn’t even apply to phase 1 because I assumed they were too competitive. Do sites like that end up in phase 2 due to being selective about applicants?
It's likely that they did not rank many students and the ones they did rank went elsewhere. Or, I heard that some sites leave slots open for phase 2 because it's less of a hassle for them. Either way, you have a good shot at it now!

Hi! School psych applicant here. I'm not sure what your training interests are or any geographic restrictions (if any), but I've seen quite a few sites on the list that myself or others in my program have interviewed for. Feel free to PM me if you'd like a sounding board!

Thank you so much for that! :bigtears: It's honestly really nice to come onto this site and see that I'm not alone in this. It's been really difficult for me to talk to my friends because they are going through Phase I and can't relate. What kinds of things did you reassess during this time, if you don't mind me asking? I guess I'm torn with how to begin this reassessment because it all still feels so overwhelming. It sounds like you're talking more about discovering what you really wanted in a site, rather than what your application looked like....? Like, how did you go through Phase II with a different mindset?
I 100% understand. I'm surprisingly okay overall as I did not LOVE any site I interviewed at during Phase I but it's still hard to see others celebrating and moving on while I'm still stuck doing more work. Thankfully I'm not alone in this process as I have been working with a close friend who also didn't match. He is an excellent clinician, which makes it more shocking that he didn't match and i know others who are in the same boat despite being excellent candidates. However, this reinforces what others have been saying that plenty of excellent clincians remain unmatched after Phase I. So i'm trying to push against that nagging feeling at the pit of my stomach and self-doubts! Just trying to focus on what needs to be done and seeing Phase II more as a second opportunity to rectify previous errors and hopefully get a better site than I could have gotten during Phase I.

Also, I have a question for you all. Do any of you know when most Phase II interviews take place? I planned a trip months ago during my spring break, which happens to be the first week of march, and at the time I didn't realize it would fall within the Phase II period. I'm hoping most interviews will take place the second week of March but this may just be wishful thinking...

ISPIC has a few openings. They require about 50/50 schools and "other" settings depending on the track you land on, but they have a good track record of seeing their interns place in pretty prestigious post-docs, including Kennedy Krieger. Also one of the only sites that only allows school psychs to apply.

I can relate to this so much! I've been combing through the list and trying to find sites that would be a perfect match, but there really are only a few like that for me. But I'm also trying to cast a wider net than I did in Phase I. There are sites that I would work well at, but not necessarily that line up with my long-term goals. Seems like I'm struggling with finding the balance between sites that fit, contribute to long-term stuff, and sites that would just be a "get it done it doesn't matter" kind of deal.

I did some phase 2 interviews last year and mine were in the 2nd week of March. They also were telephone interviews that lasted only about 20-30 minutes. So although it wouldn't be ideal, you might be able to do phone interviews on vacation depending upon your phone service availability.

There was a girl last year with a PhD in school psychology that was in my internship cohort last year. She wanted to do peds and didnt match. My internship wite was kind of like a consortium: you had two sites each her. One of her sites was a cmhc and the other a pediatric hospital. She wished she could have not had to do the cmhc but she matched at a pediatric hospital for her postdoc!

I am school psych too! There are several sites in phase 2 that myself and cohortmates interviewed with. I’d be happy to share anything about those, feel free to message me!

I’m in that same boat too. The thing I’m trying to keep in mind is that your internship experience does not define your future career. I know multiple psychologists who do completely different things now than they did on their internships. It really is just another stepping stone to get to graduation. Sure, if you can find a site that matches what you want to do, go for it! But we’ll also be able to gain opportunities in the future if we want them.

I didn't match in phase I and matched with my second choice of 3 interviews I received in phase II. The internship itself was pretty mediocre, it was poorly run and had a terrible show rate, but I did get some REALLY interesting clients. Secured my dream post doc about 3/4 of the way through internship, and my dream job about 3/4 of the way through post doc. Don't get down on yourselves because you are in phase II. It can still work out just fine.

Hello all! I posted this in the main internship thread but I thought I might try over here too. I've made a list of sites that I am considering applying to in phase ll and I am wondering if anyone has either interviewed at a particular site (and if so, what was your experience like?) or if you have knowledge of a site and it's reputation (e.g., recommend vs. not recommend?). Any and all feedback will be super helpful. Feel free to DM me or reply here if you're comfortable (I'm sure it will help others out too). Many, many thanks in advance!

I’ve worked as a prac student at the St. Louis va (and they were actually my top choice for internship, but I ended getting my number 2) and I interviewed at the central Iowa VA as well. I highly recommend both of them! If you (or anyone else) has specific questions, please feel free to DM me!

Hey all! I am here in Phase II with all you lovely amazing individuals. A training director that I interviewed with in Phase I encouraged me to apply to the track that still has openings, despite not matching to the other one. Thus, I am keeping the hope alive that my site/track is meant to be is in Phase II. Good luck getting those apps out!

That is so nice! Congrats, and hope it all works out for you! (and everybody else in Phase II)

I know this has been discussed in another thread, but I just had a private conversation with a student that didn’t match that really triggered me. She was considering “at this point just trying to get an internship to graduate.” [code for: I don’t care if it isn’t an accredited internship]. Please. If you notice yourself engaging in this line of thinking, I truly challenge you all to a. challenge this in the moment (I think we are far enough removed from match day now that the emotional salience should hopefully be a bit less intense and the possibility for rational introspection should be a bit easier), b. think about the potential long term implications, and c. look at that list. I know everyone’s situation is unique and circumstances sometimes have to be considered that might preclude one from moving to a certain location, but this list is massive compared to when I went through the match, at the height of the crisis, and students I knew in phase II were lucky to even interview at an APA site that was leftover. I know I’m just some rando on here, but I’m telling you, I already know some folks who are early career, who decided to take an unaccredited internship and are now having problems procuring employment at places they would like to be working.

I assume that not = now? Otherwise the concluding statement seems out of place with the preceding.

The biggest difference that I noticed during phase II interviews was sites were more invested in getting to know the applicant and goodness of fit (like an actual interview). I was asked during a few of the phase II interviews about why I thought I did not match and how I coped with the phase I outcome. Good luck to all of you. There are great sites out there and plenty to go around!

I still can't send you a message and this was too long to post in a reply to your comment, so I thought I'd just post it here. Anyway, I'm a current intern at U of Missouri in the adult neuropsychology track, and I love it here! I think the training is top notch; there are board-certified folks on both sides (adult and peds), really interesting cases and a wide variety of cases, and everyone is very kind and supportive. Being in a consortium is nice because you can try a bunch of things--I'm in adult neuro, but I've also done primary care and inpatient rehab rotations, and next I'm doing a pediatric neuro major rotation and a minor at the VA. Columbia itself is a pretty nice town; it's a typical college town with lots of places to eat, not too much traffic, and low cost of living. Let me know if you have any other specific questions I can answer! :)

I’m a current intern at the Truman VA side of the consortium. You can PM me for questions! I highly recommend it. All the supervisors are amazing and all of us just secured top choices for postdoc so the training is really good as well!

In Phase I, I applied relatively late in the game to 5 sites (due to family reasons/geography) and had 4 interviews. I did not match, yet my #1 choice is a newly accredited site with 3 unfilled spots in Phase II. I am truly perplexed by this outcome, since I felt like I was a good fit and very well qualified. The only reason that I can imagine is that they intentionally or inadvertently did not rank me at all. If the former, I have no idea what to improve. If the latter, I have wondered if there is any way to check if there was a mistake? Regardless, I will apply to the #1 again in Phase 2 though I am feeling pretty discouraged at the moment. On the positive side, there are more options in Phase II than Phase I (at the time that I applied) if I could convince my family to all move for a year. Any similar experiences or any suggestions on any of the above?

Similar thing happened to me. I did not match in round 1, and the site that I ranked #2 still has an opening. This was not even a super competitive site, and I happen to know that they frequently have to participate in match 2 to fill all their spots. I applied there again in round 2, but, as would be expected, I am feeling disappointed and discouraged that they apparently did not even include me in their rank. I was hoping I could find something to indicate that there might have been a glitch in the matching algorithm, but there is no way to peek behind that curtain, and I haven't found anybody online discussing ever running into an error with the match system. :/

My DCT said doubtful that there was a mistake, but I do wonder and hope that I will know someday. For Phase 2, I wrote a very targeted letter using their interview rubric. I also expanded geographically and enjoyed one of the "perks" of Phase II - free applications! I'm also warming up to the idea of waiting a year, if things don't work out from my family and me. Best of luck to you! Curious to hear how it goes for you.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions about American University. I interviewed there.

A site I interviewed at also is in Phase II, thus they did not rank me. Reflecting back, it was not a good fit clinically, personally, or geographically and I think we both sensed that. Of course, I sensed it a bit later on once my anxiety from interviews passed. Look at not being ranked as something relating to goodness of fit, rather than a knock at who you are and your worth as an individual. It doesn't hurt to reapply...all they can do is not respond or decline an interview. At the end of the day, you matter and are amazing at what you do. Good luck!

Anyone know the timeline for sites to reach out to applicants for interviews? I've heard from 4, which is awesome because I got offered 0 interviews in round 1... I was suuuper picky round 1 & this time around I've widened my scope a lot. Nonetheless, there are a few sites that I REALLY want to interview with and I want to know how long I should wait before I tell myself it's not going to happen. With that, anyone know anything about Green Chimneys? I applied and am eager to interview with them as they seem like a great fit for me. Good luck to everyone participating in round 2!!

Do you (and others) mind sharing which sites, especially since sites don’t have to send decline emails?

I received an invitation to interview today from KKI-PDD track.

Do y’all think that sites will ask us why we think we didn’t match in Phase I? What should be prepared to say in that scenario?

I doubt you’ll get that question unless it’s a site that didn’t rank you in phase I but just be honest in your response wether it was geographically limitations, bad cover letters, or you have no idea.

Are there any training directors that might be willing to share why some sites don't rank applicants that may not be their top choice but are still good applicants and would still be a good fit? I hear plenty of stories of applicants who interview at a site, don't match in round 1, then end up matching at a site they previously interviewed at but didn't get ranked at.

Dang so fast! I looked up Green Chimneys a bit, I also applied there. The program looks good and the employee reviews on Indeed and Glassdoor were positive. What concerned me was in the past decade they had a LOT of drama regarding unethical treatment, poor management, sexual abuse, physical abuse... there's a group on facebook called "Green Chimneys Survivors". Now, granted, it has been 7+ years since someone has written anything in any of the groups or forums or anything. Also, I have worked in treatment centers that had really bad reviews because they're adolescent treatment centers where the kids were sent involuntarily. So. lots of factors. But definitely something I'll ask about if I get an interview!

Thanks for sharing that info - super helpful. Just to clarify, I have not been invited to interview with them but I am hoping to have the opportunity. Hopefully you and I can be in touch about it because as I said earlier, it's so hard to gauge this time timeline and get a sense of when to expect invitations and when to accept that it's a no go. Best of luck to you!

Mass email from Memphis VAMC confirming receipt of materials.
"Our tentative plan for this phase of the match is to notify you of your interview status by noon on Wednesday and schedule the interviews for the end of this next week and the beginning of the following week. We will be offering interviews via videoconference and in person, based on the preference of the candidate. Please note, we anticipate most candidates will elect to interview via videoconference due to the compressed time frame in which we are required to complete the process."
