Arizona Acceptance!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
We sound paranoid because we are. And that's perfectly acceptable and normal. And we just like to be able to know exactly when we will know one way or another, since they have been ahead of schedule so far this year.

And I will most certainly not go hit on chicks. Yick

Something else would be more appropriate for me since I am not a lesbian.

Ok guys, I have a question for ya...(and those of you waiting for the March round, please don't take this the wrong way - that's you Joseph and Kadyra  ) Ok so I am writing a thank you card for the admissions staff. I really feel like the people who work there have done a great job in a terribly messed up year and just want to let them know that I appreciate them...I was wondering if you know any of their names? I know Linda and Dr. Leadem, but I know there are a few other ladies working in the office that I just haven't met - can anyone help? Thanks in advance...and by the way, I'm stopping by the office on Tuesday - do you guys want me to ask when the last round is going out?

oh man,

I've been trying to establish a good reputation for ASU and look at the way metsn02 comes out and ruins it. I wonder if he's already been accepted and has forgotten what it is like to wait.

jargon, linda has definitely been the most helpful to me, it seems every time I call she is always the one that helps me. everyone at the medical school has been super friendly so far though. sorry I couldn't help much with names, but check out the website and see if any names you see there sound familiar.

joe and kadyra, you've got one more person pullin for ya. a waitlist a UofA is pretty much an acceptance, but lets all hope it doesn't come down to that.

Hey Sundevil, who is metsn02? Did I miss something?

he/she posted just above kadyra, 3 or 4 posts ago, and pretty much came out and said stop whinning.

Oh, silly me. :) I see it now. So when is your UCSF interview? Did Stanford agree to let you have one while you're in SF? Let us know what's up...

I will be at UCSF March 18, Stanford just told me I have to wait. They said I may not know with enough time to schedule them on my trip. I was told they are interviewing at least through April, but if I can't double up with UCSF, I'm not flying back out again, I don't care that it is Stanford. Plus, they said after my interview offer, they need at least two weeks to prepare my interviewers. What the hell do they have to do to them? Oh well, I'm happy this whole process is coming to end for me.

Yeah, I was having a rather bad day and got super annoyed at the guy who told us to stop whining. We are allowed to whine if we want to :p

Jay, if you'd ask when the next round is going out, I'd be grateful :) I don't remember anyone's names in the admissions office. I would suggest a few, but they may be people at other schools, so...

Jargon,

Here's the info you requested...

These are the two admissions office ladies that directly work with the applicants..if there are others, I'm not aware of them:

Linda Berke: Program Coordinator, Sr.
Ann Marie Braucci: Academic Advisor

I agree, they are both extremely helpful and courteous. We are quite fortunate to have them. Jargon, that's a great idea..sending them thank you letters. I'll have to do the same come mid-March when the good news arrives!

Greg

Memo to all the paranoid/whining UofA applicants. Calm down, you people sound like the pre-meds that always raise their hands in class to contest a percentage point on your O-Chem exams. Let?s keep it real here. I?ve discovered this site fairly late in the applicant game, but what I have admired from this website is the tremendous sharing of information from all spectrums of the scientific community. It is incredible to learn from such a broad range of people, and to share in the experiences of those who are attending the schools for which we dream of attending. What I absolutely can?t stand about this forum (and for that matter people in this thread) is the impatience and crying about UofA?s application process. Compared to most schools that I have applied to, UofA has been perhaps the most upfront in making the rules of the application process clear to its applicants. They use a nonrolling format and they send out three mailings (of which they SPECIFICALLY state to you at your interview the days that they will mail the acceptance letters out). What else do you people want? Should they contact each and every one of the 500 applicants each time they send out a mailing? I for one appreciate the clear-cut deadlines and projections about chances of admission much more than say at USC or UCLA which keep you in the dark for months. Patience, perseverance, and resilience are valuable qualities in a physician, and if anything this application process will teach us all lessons in each of these traits. As a second time applicant I can attest to the difficulties of medical school admissions, but I wouldn?t trade the trials, tribulations, and triumphs of this journey for anything in the world. It has matured me in a way that I could have never imagined and I only hope that many of you will feel the same after this is over.

P.S. Now that I have shared my emotions with all of you, I only find it fitting that I should talk trash about the school that I dream of attending some day. UofA basketball sucks real bad this year. Losing to ASU at Wells Fargo and then almost choking at home. Come on. When your best player?s dad uses words like ?hooorrribble? and ?teeeerrribble? to describe your game, things are pretty bad. Enjoy your token NCAA birth and early 1st round departure to Alcorn State this year Wildcats, because after ASU captures the PAC-10 tournament title (the same tournament that Lute Olson lobbied against for 10 years because he knew that his team couldn?t come through when the pressure was on) its going to be Braxton and Millage throwing it down in the tourney (NIT?).

P.P.S Kadyra, if you get ?super annoyed? at a post on SDN, I hate to see what your going to be like when you?re a resident dealing with 5 hours of sleep over 3 days?.Just kidding Kadyra, after getting a look at your profile picture I wouldn?t mind extending to you the peace branch for your digits. Can you hook an ASU brotha up?

We wondered if they were still going to be ahead of schedule or if they were back on schedule. I don't think this is whining. Or unreasonable. I appreciate that U of A is so upfront about their process. It's a relief not to be totally biting my nails and stalking the mailman for this school. Figuratively speaking, of course. But I like to know for sure.

I don't think it has made me more mature though. It has only amplified my impatience.

•••quote:••••UofA basketball sucks real bad this year.•••••U of A basketball is inconsistent this year because they have such a young team. We beat USC by almost 30 points and we only lost to UCLA at Pauley because the refs weren't making obvious calls (if I can see it, it's obvious). Inconsistent yes. Suck, no. And Luke Walton isn't our best player. According to the media, it's Jason Gardner. I am proud of ASU this year. They have been doing well. But I have to clarify something for you. The reason Lute Olsen lobbied against a Pac-10 tournament is because it tires the playersout before March Madness and in a normal year (this year's conference wins and losses haven't been normal), the winner of the Pac-10 tournament was always whoever was leading the conference. This year, it is not so clear-cut, so we shall see.

I don't hook anyone up who knocks my basketball team :p

"With so much drama in the LBC, it's hard being Snoop D O Double G" - Snoop

Is it just me, or has the drama on SDN increased five fold in the last several months. Anyway, just wanted to say goodmorning (it's an absiolutely BEAUTIFUL one in Tucson today) and also I see your point metsn02, but we are chill over here in the AZ corner. :D

:D

I was in a good mood this week until yesterday afternoon when some nerd smashed in the side of my car in a parking lot. I am still trying to get ahold of him again :p I'm not hurt, my car isn't that bad, but boy am I sore! It is amazing what your body goes through in a stupid 5mph accident ::sigh::

Anyway, I really do see metsn02's point. I just don't agree. It's one of those agree to disagree things. Not too dramatic, I hope.

 oneironaut

I am SORRY, metsn02, if this is too whiny or unrelaxed for you, but has anyone heard about the date for AZ's last round of acceptances? Thanks in advance.

Hey guys - for those of you waiting for the last round of decisions, Dean Leadem said that they SHOULD be going out at the end of next week (so most likely this Friday). I can't guarantee that or anything, but that's what the man said at the Dean's welcome thing.

Anyway, a couple of things that I found about UA that were sort of dissappointing: That the USMLE scores are "at the national average"...AT not ABOVE...But I'm not too worried - boards are just like any other standardized exam - Sundevil and I are gonna rock the boards and raise that average for our year, aren't we Santiago? The other thing was the quality of students - I know this is bad to say, but I knew peeps there that were accepted that had no business being accepted in my humble opinion...but I guess that's to be expected at a school that only considers in-state students...Regardless, I am quite sure I will be happy here.

Good luck next week everyone!

Thanks for the info, Jargon!

ewells, jargon

it was nice meeting both of you guys (if you consider that a formal meeting jargon). It was also nice to meet your wife ewells. Jargon, I agree on the disappointment of the board scores and probably the quality of the students. I'm just worried about myself and doing the best I can and getting the most out of these next four years. jargon, we will own step1. Of course, I also care about the success of my fellow classmates but you know what I mean. good luck to everyone next friday.

Ewells - were you accepted? I didn't hear - if so, congrats! Are you still headed for Penn State? Good luck wherever you're headed. :)

You didn't tell us you were accepted ewells :p Congrats!

I have not been accepted at UA; My wife and I had dinner on Friday night with Sundevil and his wife. Both our spouses are teachers and they wanted to get together to discuss teaching/tutoring opportunities in Tucson. I had a great time on Friday, Sundevil. Hopefully we can all get together sometime this summer.

I am 99% positive that I am going to Penn State.

I see now, ewells. Well, it's cool that you got to meet sundevil.

99% sure you're going to Penn State? What's the 1% that's stopping you

Update:

Admin. committee will be sending out last batch this friday (3/8) as well as the waitlist and rejections.

Joe

Friday huh? ::sigh:: OK, this means that I have to ditch my volunteering. Why? Well, because I leave for work at 7:30am (before the start of the adcom workday), and I get off work at 4:30 and volunteering starts at 5 and doesn't end until 9. I can't wait that long, and I don't have access to a computer all day-- I am home sick with bronchitis today. I am sure they will understand. They are nice people at the peds urgent care. They should be since I am sick all the time now from being exposed to those little runts every week  I bet I will be nervous all day at work Friday too. ::sigh:: I am such a spaz!

Take a deep breath, Kadyra! After reading your post I think pediatrics is for you!! :p /jk

Just wanted to bump this thread up a little in anticipation for the possible movement today from UofA. Man, I just got back from watching the game tonight and I am embarrassed that ASU cannot hit a freakin' free throw. I mean come on, the most fundamental aspect of basketball and they were 0for7 at one point. Anyway, I take back my comment about Luke Walton sucking. He's decent. But the real players on that team are the three point guards: Gardner, Stoudamire, and Bynum. Those guys can penetrate and hit the trey. If Gardner's smart he'll stick around for one more year to help the two freshman develop next year. Props to UofA, even though you punks are going to get balled on by USC in the final. Good luck to everyone tomorrow and I hope we all hear good news. peace

metsn02,

You insist on pushing the one button that I really hate having pushed :D  The U of A basketball button. Don't be too sure about the final. Remember that U of A and USC are 1 and 1 this season and when we beat them, we beat them by almost 30 points. They didn't spank us quite that hard. Either way, it'll be a great game.

By the way, I won't be online after this to check my e-mail until about 5:00pm MST, so if I odn't post today, it's not because I'm rejected. It's because my work is lame and has no computers

Anyone out there get good news today? If you haven't checked your mail yet, GOOD LUCK!

Made the alternate list...well, could have been worse I suppose:)

Hey not too bad at all Greg - I heard the vast majority of last year's alternates were eventually offered admission (something like 24/25?!). Best wishes...

Thanks Jargon! Hopefully the other AZ applicants following this thread heard some good news as well. I'll keep you posted!

Greg, when did you get an email? Did it say alternate list in that? I haven't gotten any mail yet.

Joe

Joe, the email was sent at 8:01 this morning. 'Alternate' was listed as the subject heading. The email described that applicants on the list would be assigned a numerical position by March 29th.

Greg

Thanks Greg...hope they're not done sending!!

Ahhh! I'm freaked out now. It is 11:48am and STILL no e-mail. Anyone else in the same boat? :)

It's 2:30, I have no email either. Not to be a downer, but I found out that they only send emails to accepted and alternates. I'm hoping that they lost my email and I won't be getting a rejection in the mail. I've resigned myself to the fact that I won't be staying here next year; I'll be going to MCV instead. Bummer.

Joe

Bummer!.. That's far better than nothing, my friend!

...and besides, UofA has strange admissions procedures, so you should feel proud regardless of what happens..

So is that it, they released the last wave of accepted, and the waitlist as well? Or only the waitlist so far? What do you guys think. I haven't heard a word from them either.

Thanks for the support Greg! And congrats to those who got accepted and waitlisted, since we know how well that moves. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that Kadyra gets some good news when she checks her email today!

Joe

Hey oneironaut -
I talked to someone from admissions yesterday and they told me that only accepted applicants would be e-mailed today (although apparently wait-listed applicants were e-mailed as well). Well, I guess that is it! It's already 4:41pm and no e-mail.

Well, congrats to all those who heard something today. For those of you that haven't heard anything, don't worry, UofA does have strange admissions procedures. Keep your heads up, just keep on trying and pushing harder. Accomplishing your goals woudln't be so sweet if it didn't involve some struggle.

Ewells, will the waitlist be getting shorter by one person then?

Jargon, will you be at the research presentation on Monday, March 18. I've postponed my interview at UCSF and I will be there so I hope to see ya.

Take care guys, best of luck with everything.

For those who didn't hear today, I'm sorry about the not so good news...It's sort of annoying because UA admissions can be really, really random. Particularly Joe, Ewells and Kayra...I feel for you because I am pretty sure you are better qualified than a few peeps I know that got in. I could go into some pretty repulsing details, but I'll leave it at that, seeing as though this isn't exactly an anonymous forum.

Sundevil - I was not planning to attend the MRSP reception March 18, but I'll stop in since I know you'll be there. :) I will be in the Cancer Center anyway around that time so it's not too big a trip, plus I can bum some food...

In other news: SPRING BREAK IS HERE! Well, unfortunately I am getting all four wisdom teeth removed next week, so I will be chillin on pain killers I'm sure. But after that, I plan on working on this 24 pack of Newcastle I just bought. :D

Sundevil, yes I am going to withdraw next week.

Kadyra, Joe and everyone else, my heart is breaking for you. I was planning on venting about not being accepted, but I still feel pretty lucky to be going to a school that I liked, so I think that I'll just save it.

Joe, are you definitely going to MCV now?

Yep ewells, unless UA sends me some kind of acceptance or waitlist letter and forgot to email me, I'm definitely going to MCV. It's a good school, good locale, but I was looking forward to staying put and not paying the extra 20K that I will be at MCV. Oh well, I'll still be a doc, right? And classes do get out at noon almost everyday at MCV...it can't be all bad. Thanks guys for the support, and congrats to everyone who got accepted.

Joe

Joe/eagle, was your old signature a Restaurat at the End of the Universe quote? I have been meaning to ask.

No, it wasn't a restaurant signature...I actually forgot what it was! LOL.
