I'll be coming to AVC in two weeks for an interview!!! Aaahhhh!!! I hadn't heard anything from them since early December so I totally thought I was going to be rejected. This is a huge shock and I cannot describe how excited I am!!!

One question: I've heard that the AVC interview is "closed file", meaning that your interviewers never see your transcripts, experience hours, etc. Is this true?

Congrats!

It is closed file. It's possible Dr Singh sees your file (most interviews are Dr Singh and two other faculty), but the other two faculty won't and you won't be asked about anything in it.

You wear your interview suit for the whole day. First there's the tour and after the tour you go right upstairs for the lunch and then its time for the interviews. Good luck! 🙂

Thanks for the info! I was thinking I would have time to change between lunch and the interview. Glad I asked!

Does anyone know how soon after our interview we hear if we got in? And how they contact us, is it via email or snail mail?

I was interviewed March 2, I heard back about two weeks later, through email. I was offered an early admission spot, though, so I'm not sure if that's the same timeline for everyone. You can search the forum for old acceptances threads and see when acceptances went out in previous years.

I was just offered an interview! I was completely shocked, especially since I am an international (US student); I guess I just got the impression that it's a bit harder to gain acceptance as an international student because, understandably, there are many seats reserved for those students in that region.

Does anyone know the percentage of applicants that get interviews and the percentage of interviewers that get accepted?

Thank you! 🙂

Congratulations, MaiT! I can't help with your questions unfortunately, because I don't know a lot about the percentages for the internationals.

Thank you!! 🙂 I'm so excited about this interview because there are some doctors I work with, that didn't even attend AVC, but still rave about it! I looked through my e-mails, and the first e-mail I (and all other international applicants) received said they interview 60-70 international applicants total. So now I just need to find how many international applicants apply lol.

I do have a question regarding interviews though: I looked through some feedback, and are you allowed to "pass" some questions, or at least have time to think?! (It doesn't help that I have TERRIBLE short-term memory).
Also, if I wear a professional dress (I wore this to another interview, but it was only a one-on-one interview, no tour/lunch), will they look down on it and prefer a suit?

Congratulations! I'm not sure either how many international applicants apply, but in my class we had 21 international students (20 now, one left 🙁) and 42 students from the Atlantic provinces.

You can pass questions in the interview and they give you time to compose your thoughts. I wore a blouse, skirt, and blazer to my interview. The other ladies that interviewed with me wore dress pants and a nice blouse and sweater. As long as you look professional and are comfortable I don't see a dress being a problem. I'm sweat shirt and jeans kind of girl, though, so maybe someone else wants to weigh in

Absolutely you can pass. I wouldn't advise passing 3 questions in a row mind you, but 1 or 2 is no big deal. You will not be penalized for it.

A professional dress would be fine. Lots of women wore dresses or a blouse and skirt. The tour is all inside, and you'll be able to park close to the hospital door, so don't worry too much about bundling up and footwear. The tour takes from 30-45 minutes so I'd advise picking shoes you're at least moderately comfortable in. Look neat and wear something you feel confident in. For me, it was a pants suit, because I feel awkward in skirts and dresses.

Thanks for the replies ladies 🙂 When I searched AVC admissions stats, an AAVMC guide came up on Google Books, and last year, there were 269 international applicants.

I love to dress up! When I'm going to class/just lounging around, I'm always in sweats, but if I'm going to an event that's professional/a special occasion, I always wear a dress; so if I went to this interview wearing pants, I wouldn't feel completely like myself, so I'm happy it won't be frowned upon! It will make me more comfortable 🙂

I GOT AN INTERVIEW!!!!
sooo excited but I'm at work and can't look this thread over yet.
Congrats to everyone else who got interviews!!1!!

😀😀😀😀😀

Thanks!! Who has interviewed already?

Congrats MaiT and TooLove! 👍

Starting to get nervous for my interview next week . . . which is really unsettling because I hardly ever get nervous for anything! For those who have interviewed previously, did you use mostly animal experiences to answer the questions? Looking over the replies I've listed for myself, most of my answers come from other experiences (clubs, sports, etc) than animal/veterinary work. I know that it's okay to use non-veterinary experiences, but will it come off poorly if I use too many?

I had exactly very few, if any, based on animal/vet experience. I think I talked about 4-H for one thing. You should be fine.

I used one animal experience to answer a question. The rest of my answers came from school, work, family, and volunteer experiences. As long as you have a relevant, coherent answer you can talk about any experience. You will do great, relax! :luck:

And congrats TooLove!

That goes with anything. I used an animal experience situation in my last, unrelated job interview. It brought up a lot of interesting questions. I think the question was about how I handled conflict. I just so happened to have an encounter with another pre-vet student on an international trip.

Good luck US applicants!

I think my time to shine will be C/O 2019 (that seems so far away!)

Thanks BlackDog and KY!

BlackDog, you will be fine!! You'll have to let us know how it goes!
I found out this afternoon and I am so nervous already 🙂

Congrats TooLove and Blackdog!! 🙂 how are you getting from the us to pei? Im inferring from the flights listed online that you need to make at least 1 stop in canada...and the layover can be around 12 hours!! Does anyone have any suggestions?

I think a lot of people flew into Halifax and drove if I am not mistaken.

My mom and I are flying from Boston into Moncton International Airport and then renting a car and driving about an hour to Charlottetown. It was a lot cheaper to fly out of Boston than the airport closest to us, and also cheaper to fly to Moncton instead of all the way into PEI. I highly suggest playing around with your departure/arrival locations to find the cheapest flights.

I think we have a 2 hour layover in Toronto. All of the flights I saw stopped in Toronto, and a few stopped in Montreal as well. You'll have to just dig around on various travel sites to find what will work best for you.

If you can't fly into Charlottetown then Moncton is a better choice than Halifax especially this time of year. Moncton is about two hours away, Halifax is more like 4.

The PEI airport is only seasonally international so you have to make at least one other stop in Canada before going on to PEI. The planes will be prop planes, just a heads up! I've had good luck with finding flights without such crazy long layovers. Have you checked Expedia?

For my interview, I answered almost exclusively with animal/vet experiences. One of my interview told me that I was welcome to use others, but I felt like those were my best examples so I stuck with them. I don't think it matters what experience it is, so long as it answers the question🙂

Just so you know, Charlottetown is closer to two hours from Moncton, especially if the roads aren't so hot. Good luck and safe travels!

I am just over the Canadian border in Buffalo. I priced flights to PEI and they were outrageous...so Im going to save some money and drive to Toronto and fly out there.

I looked into driving to Toronto then flying direct from there, but for me the flights weren't all that much more expensive than they were just flying to Toronto. And good thing too, because I highly doubt I would have been able to drive from Pennsylvania to Toronto this Sunday given the blizzard that happens to be dumping snow all over the place. Hopefully airline travel will have cleared up a bit by sunday evening though, or I'll be panicking just a bit :scared: At least I added an extra day's padding into my travel plans...

Does anyone know when the last day to interview US students is? I interviewed on the 7th and fell IN LOVE with the school so I'm anxious to know when I might hear back

I'm US, my interview is scheduled for the 22nd. Probably not before then?

How did your interview go?!?!?! Any wisdom to pass along? I have been looking over the UPEI website and SDN. Seems fairly straightforward..

My advice would be to go over the interview questions on SDN and you will be perfectly prepared =) There are no trick questions! Also, don't be nervous...the faculty that interview are so unbelievably kind and make the interview feel very comfortable.

Thanks for sharing your date with me, I wish you the best!!!

I forgot to answer your first question haha: my interview went well, I feel really good about it and I can't wait to get the results :xf:

IIRC, in previous years threads they said decisions went out in late March.

That seems to be a common theme I am finding. Easier said than done though - this is my first and so far ONLY interview! :scared:

It was mine too up until yesterday when I received another interview invite so I went to AVC in the same mindset as you now, believe me you can do this!

Awesome - congrats!!!

Out of curiousity, to the Internationals, what makes you apply to AVC? Something about the curriculum, student testimony, marketing, alumni you've met, admissions process...? Don't get me wrong, I adore the school. But I'll be honest, if I was an International, I think AVC's price tag would make me run for the hills. 😳 I don't think I'd even apply.

I applied because they looked at a big chunk of different classes than the US schools, so my calculated GPA was a helluva lot better vs. what the US schools perceived it to be. I think my experience also carried more weight than at a lot of US schools. If I had been accepted in the US, I would have gone there because of price but also familiarity, I guess. I know it's still NA but it's more different than a lot of people think (not necessarily culturally, but in many other ways that have been kind of inconvenient)>

I applied to AVC, in part, because I have a Canadian friend who went there and who enjoyed the experience. In addition, my state vet school is quite competitive so I really had to consider alternatives. I know that vet school is still quite competitive for Canadian students. I have several Canadian friends who either struggled to get into WCVM and some others who were unsuccessful. No doubt, the tuition for internationals at AVC is quite high but not that much different from OOS tuition in many other states for me.

Coquette22 - As you know vet school in Canada is much more affordable generally than U.S. schools are for Americans. My state vet school is approximately 3 times the tuition and that's for in state applicants only, than AVC is for those from the Maritimes (or any other Canadian vet school).

Which reminds me, I have not heard anything from AVC yet regarding an interview, whereas several other US students have already had theirs scheduled. At what point should I stop thinking about being interviewed? Regardless, I am still happy for those who are successful.

I suspected this was the case. I know AVC's process helped me out, because I know I lack experience compared with a lot of the American stats I see on here, and if I was applying at an American school, I probably wouldn't have a snowball's chance in Hell.

Thanks, landis. I do know that American OOS is much higher, but every time I've seen the numbers, AVC's international rates still seem to rank near the top of the list even compared with the other OOS tuition rates.

Coquette22 - Though AVC's tuition is high, in my opinion, going to a Canadian vet school is generally viewed as a favorable alternative to attending an American school as opposed to other options, at least the Caribbean schools. I do not say this to criticize those who have chosen those options because I know of a currenet vet resident at UC Davis who went to Ross for vet school, so I know they graduate some good vets. That being said though, vet students and vets I know seem to be quite opinionated about where others went to vet school.

I want to know if I'm understanding their applicant review process correctly (based on what their website says). As of right now, I have been selected for interview, so they have already reviewed/ranked my academic portion of the application? Does this mean, that after my interview, they are ONLY going to look at my interview score and animal/vet experiences?

I'm so excited for my interview! I told my vet about this yesterday, and she was more excited than I originally was, so now her excitement made me even more excited and anxious! I can't even concentrate on my schoolwork lol. I keep looking up more and more info about AVC online and everything I find is pulling my opinion about the school in a positive direction.

I'm coming from Texas this Monday for the interview and they do have a flight with 1 hour layover in Toronto using Air Canada. When isyour interview?

Just an fyi for those of you from the US who are flying to PEI and maybe haven't flown to Canada before, on your way back into the US from Canada, you will often have to go through US customs before you leave Canada, depending on the airport (I know this is true in Toronto). It's a little backwards and often unexpected, and they don't give you an obvious warning about it when you schedule your flight. So make sure you schedule your layovers accordingly. It's not usually a problem unless you check bags, because you will have to collect your checked luggage to walk it through customs and then recheck it, and sometimes it can take awhile for your bags to arrive. First time I flew home from Canada through Toronto I had an hour layover, ran to customs to make sure I got through on time, and ended up waiting almost the whole hour for my bag to show up :annoyed: Had to nag the lady patrolling to let me cut in line then had to run all the way to the far end of the airport where the prop planes live, almost missed my flight, and my baggage did miss my flight. However, that being said, I don't think most of us will be checking bags for a vet school interview. But in case you do, just an fyi...
