Hi everybody! I imagine those who were accepted received this info, but I am an alternate and my email didn't have any information about enrollment dates or the class of 2025. I thought I would share these pages with my fellow optimistic alternates who are keeping AVC on their list!

Hi! I am going to be a new student in the fall coming from TN. Any information you could provide regarding applying for a study permit, getting a bank account, finding housing, and general transition to life in PEI would be so helpful. I briefly studied in Saskatchewan previously but never needed to apply for a study permit, so I'm a bit overwhelmed haha. Thanks!

They look at your 10 courses (25%) and your last academic year (25%). Though this year, GRE is not required so each component would be worth 30% I do believe.

I think they were asking about the formula to convert letter grades to percentages, which I’ve always wondered about, too. Unfortunately AVC isn’t transparent about it.

I believe that whatever letter grade you have in a course gets converted into a number grade. Therefore, if you get an A+ in a class, I believe it gets capped off at a 93. If you get an A I believe it equates to an 89. I think B+ might be 78. Again, I don't know for sure, but I remember when I asked before they had told me 🙂
 
I can’t believe that it’s almost time to hear about interviews! Can anyone confirm if rejection emails come out the day before interview invitations? Good luck everyone!
 
Getting anxious about interview invites (NS applicant)! I wonder if it will still be around the same time as previous years (besides last year). Seems to be around the second Thursday of March when reading previous threads but maybe different again this year because of COVID-19?

Yeah, same! I think last year was March 27th! 🙂 I keep wondering how the lack of GRE will impact scores? Like if it will help or hurt in some ways. 🤔

I seen on the UPEI website that our calculated academic average is now 60% of the final overall admissions score instead of 50%. I hope it all works out to be helpful. Are you a NS applicant?

Ok, nice! And no I'm not but I'm an Atlantic Canada applicant! 🙂 GRE was never my strong suit, so I really hope it does! haha
 
Does anyone know when/if accepted students get a financial aid package?
 
Have any international students who were placed on the waitlist received an offer/been removed from the waitlist yet??
 
I am SO sorry I dropped the ball here. Life is busy and honestly it slipped my mind! Hopefully I can still be helpful...I'm class of 2015 so while things may have changed somewhat, I think I can help with overall information.

1. I was on my own insurance, not student insurance, so I can't really speak to healthcare. Canadian healthcare is a lot more limited in terms of immediate availability, though; my Canadian neighbors had to wait like weeks to get an x-ray at one point. Appointments for general stuff were also harder to get.

2. Yes, you can use facilities and engage in undergrad activities! There are tons of clubs for vet students - pretty much anything you can think of and there's a club for it.

3. Yes, you can work in the teaching hospital. You can also come down and shadow the older students, interns, residents and clinicians. It is encouraged, but many first and even second years are a bit shy I think. Just make sure to stay out of the way and listen more than you speak at first 😉

4. It was lecture-based for the first three years with the last full year being rotations. There was one class first year (structure and function) that was more PBL/group-style learning. Overall, I would say it was pretty similar to undergrad class structure but labs became more and more fun and practical as you went on through the years.

5. Study abroad...hm. There are opportunities for rotations abroad in fourth year, but you can't do semesters away like you would do in undergrad, just because they want to make sure that you're meeting their particular curriculum standards.

6. Research opportunities, yes, but you need to do the leg work to connect with people. The volume of vet school is a LOT heavier than undergrad so it may be difficult to find time to study, participate in social and extra-curriculars AND be involved with research on a meaningful level. Not to say it can't be done, but it will require prioritizing things and perhaps sacrificing in other areas.

7. Surprise costs - no, not really. Island living is a lot more expensive in just about every category compared to state-side so make sure you're watching your budget and the exchange rate. Obstacles - mostly just schlepping all of your stuff back and forth between semesters - definitely a pain.

1. Study permits - I applied at the border and it was maybe 30mins start to finish. Pretty quick and easy. Make sure you have your loan documentation at the ready. Also be aware of day of the week/time you plan to cross. As you might expect, weekends and mid-day are usually busier overall and may take longer.

2. Bank accounts - I used TD. I just went into the branch and asked to set up an account. Pretty simple and straight-forward. Again, have your paperwork, including study permit, ready.

3. Housing - I actually found my housing through SDN from an older student 🙂 I know there is a Facebook group as well where lots of housing options will be posted, from single living to roommmates, etc. Don't panic!

4. Transitioning to life in PEI - a big one! For me personally it was quite an adjustment. I was long-distance with my now-husband, my family and friends were 1200 miles away...it was tough. I was also coming from a more suburban life and PEI is rural, so that was definitely a hurdle too. People always talk about how nice everyone is there but in my honest opinion, I felt that islanders were aloof and reserved and not actually particularly nice. Not nasty or anything but definitely not what I was expecting going in. Everyone at the school was wonderful though! Things will be more expensive, they may not be as readily available, the hours of places may not be what you expect (gas stations, for example)...I think if you go into it knowing you will need to adjust (and recognizing that there will be A LOT going on in your life at that time), you'll be OK. Keep an open mind, embrace the fact that these will be some of the most challenging years in your life...you'll do fine 🙂

I asked about this and was told that we should receive a letter in June about our financial aid options. I am coming from the US though (and need the FAFSA to be processed) so it may be different for Canadian students.

Me either! C/o 2022 heard about invites on March 16th, and c/o 2023 heard on the 14th according to past threads. Last year they heard much later (bc covid) but I’m hoping we have good odds of hearing in the coming week like the other years🙂

Yeah, usually the Friday before St Patty’s is the norm, that’s why many of us thought today would be it!

That’s what I’m thinking! Don’t panic! The registrars office closes at 4 so I’m taking a wild guess that they sent a few emails out and will continue tomorrow 🙂 it’s a new admissions coordinator this year so I’m assuming that she’s doing things differently and not sending all emails on the same day
 
They sent rejections out about a week later last year, but they may still be sending invites. I don't know any Newfoundlander's that got an invite yet, so there still may be hope.
