Class of 2016....how ya doing?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Dear c/o 2016,

It's totally cute that you are excited, but stop trying to hurry summer along. Some of us are enjoying it still.

Kthx.

I am totally with you on this! While I AM excited to start vet school, I am in no hurry to finish up my summer. August will come soon enough.

Just bought my first book required for school!

Oooh soo exciting!!!

So interesting update about the duplex vs apartment situation. Upon talking to the landlord more I found out that the current tenant is a hoarder 😱 Her lease is not up until August 14th, just like 5 days before mandatory orientation. If the hoarding situation is as bad as the landlord described then I don't think there is any way to get that place cleaned up enough before I move in before school starts, it would just be way to stressful. I reworked the numbers and the apartment is only 5k more a year than living in the duplex, so for my first year of vet school I think I am going to go with the apartment. Not the cheapest option, but I think the less stressful one!

Oh gross! Definitely go with the apartment. No matter how much you clear out the ex-hoarder's place, there are bound to be some creepy crawlies that stick around. *shudder*

Just finished the most AWFUL class EVER!!! Well, I finished the assignments at least... I still have to take 5 exams for that class, and 1 for another all within the next two weeks 😱

Thats what I was thinking too, not to mention any smell that may have permanently permanated into the walls.

Just signed my Master Promissory Note for my loans...feels like a death sentence...

👍
I still have not mustered up the courage to press the accept button for the loans... I feel like once I do iron chains will be clamped to my legs.

I've only done it for my Direct Loan so far. My portal says something about my financial aid package being under review and that I should be receiving notification about my status for the Health Professionals Loan, etc soon, so I'm kind of waiting to see what everything says. I doubt I got it, but you never know.

We haven't gotten anything about loans yet... They said sometime in August but that worries the type a side of my personality. 🙁

Did that last week. I had to have alcohol right after.

Did y'all wait to hear from your schools to do that? Or am I missing something? :scared:

I got a letter like the first week of June for the amount I'd be getting from my Direct Loan. I also got an email saying to go ahead and do the entrance interview thing and sign the promissory note. I can also apply for the GradPLUS loan now if I want to, but I'm kind of waiting to see what happens since my financial aid is under review...whatever that means.

I was preemptive about it because I had nightmares about not getting my loans. But right after I meet with the financial aide dept, we got emails about financial aide.

So I guess there's not much to do but wait until August... don't they know how stressed that makes me? :-/

All of our financial info was posted online, and then it just had a note that we had to do the counselling and the note before we could receive any loan payment.

Ok thanks, I appreciate it.

Yeah, our stuff for Ohio was posted on our portal page and was super simple (although frightening :scared:) to fill out and accept the loans. We had a master promissory note and entrance counseling to complete as well.

I literally just got my loan information/award money last week, both online and in letter format. So don't worry, I think you're school will contact you.

I felt like I accepted too much money to be honest, but everyone was like well it's your first year soo just see how it goes and you'll learn what kind of budget you really need 😕 and then if you don't use all your money just put it into savings. I feel like keeping my loan money is like I'm hoarding mafia money or something outlandish like that 😳.what is wrong with me?!?!

It's really hard to know that I have to wait until August or September (AFTER classes start), to make sure I can pay for them :scared:. I'm sure it will work out, but why does UF have to take so long?! 🙄

WSU's student services representative for the vet school claims we shouldn't hear anything until late July. I guess vet students get last priority here?

I'm pretty nervous though. Late July financial aid when school starts early August is terrifying. My husband and I both worked last year (and made fairly good money) and what the FAFSA believes I should contribute to my education likely doesn't jive with reality. I keep having nightmares about owing full tuition or some other craziness.

Hahaha. I totally understand the feeling. But that's my plan as well. Take out the full amount the first year and go from there. Now I'm just debating if I want to live an apartment with 2 other people that will save me a ton of money but is a bit further away than I think I'd like to be. And we're only talking a 20 minute walk from the school, but it's towards a more residential areas of University City and I think I kind of want to be a little closer to the stores and stuff. Especially when it comes to groceries. I did the whole carrying groceries for a 20+ minute walk when I was abroad and it's kind of annoying since you have to shop pretty much every week that way.

That would freak me the eff out. Although, I guess I didn't get some of my loan money in undergrad until like a week or two in and it was credited to my checking account. Still, I'm supposed to get my direct loan like 5 days before orientation starts, which isn't that much better really.

That would freak me the eff out.

To be honest... that's what it's doing at this point. I emailed the lady in charge of all of this stuff so I'm hoping I'll hear something soon. :xf::scared:

I am going through the same thing too! I feel like I don't want to accept the whole thing because it is a ton of money, but at the same time others and my parents are telling to accept it all and just feel out the first year.

Also, I can't decide what color tubing I want for my stethoscope. I'm leaning between Caribbean or Ceil Blue...might consider Raspberry as well.

Um... seriously. I've lived on so little cash through undergrad, it feels obscene to me to get like a $10k living refund. Not used to not working! Everyone I talked to also suggested just taking it all to figure out my budget, so we'll see...

 I was watching scrubs today and was having the same discussion in my head. What kinda of tubing do I want? Should I go professional and do something like Navy Blue, or have fun and go with something like Orange?

What are you thinking as far as type? Something like Littmann cardio 3?

Psh. Totally going for something fun. They can judge me all they want. And I'm sure my parents would totally get me a more professional one as a "Congrats you passed your boards!" gift.

And yes, I'm going with the Cardio III.

I'm going with hunter green!!!! though raspberry has been a close second. slash, I need to buy mine slash I want to wait for my birthday to ask for it so I don't have to buy it! 😳

These are the two choices I'm down to as well. 👍 I sort of like the plum too.

I got a cardio 3 (love it!) and went with red 😀.

I'm wondering if we even need them yet. I may hold off until end of second year when clinics start. I'll ask my big 😉

I'm having the same problem too! I secretly want coral pink, but I will most likely end up getting black with the brass/copper-y finish.

I got my stethoscope as a gift from my undergrad department. I didn't get to choose a fun color. 🙁 You guys make me jealous!

I would take a free one over a colored one 😀. I think *we* are probably jealous of *you*.
