Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
No negative effects from my first rabies vaccine! It's not really even sore.

First day of orientation was super fun! Love my classmates so far. Should be interesting with only 30 of us. We were supposed to be dressed nice and I wore nice shoes and now my feet are KILLING me but I still have to go to the coat ceremony tonight....all I want to do is take a long bubble bath. 🙁

Cool! A class of thirty sounds like a good time. Coat first, then bath. Get your priorities straight. 😉

Might be a stupid question, but what do you guys wear your white coats for? We don't have our coat ceremony until right before we go into clinics and then obviously, the coats are worn while we're doing our clinical rotations.

We have a zoo technology class where when we go over to the small animal school hospital we have to wear it and nice clothes. They also use it to put patches and our monogram on when we have 3rd to 4th year transition.

Uhh maybe!? Probably! Crap! Did you ever get that anatomy program to work lupin?

I haven't tried. I'm doing good to occasionally switch my screen to the DG. Instead, I'm watching Malcolm in the Middle, eating twinkies, and drinking some home made hooch. The cats are getting palpated though 'cause they're passed out from playing on their new tree I put together for them after class.

You generally get a new one by then, though you have to buy it I think. So don't worry about keeping it pristine. I managed to lose mine over the summer, or maybe a freshie is wearing it now - if you see anyone with a big R on the pocket, stab them and take it.

Oooo stabbing sounds fun! I will be on the lookout! I think I am actually the only R in the class so I will know... :meanie:

We do occasional clinical rounds starting first year. In fact I just had my first round today, 3 weeks into vet school. I wore my white coat and professional clothing.

As for the rabies vaccine, my arm was sore for a day or two but is feeling much better now.
We did have several people from my class pass out though :/

I wear mine on a hanger in the closet.

Yeah, mine will be in the closet as well. The ceremony is put on by the CVMA and ABVMA here (not sure if the AVMA does it for you or it's just the school?) and so there's the embroidery on the coat with the CVMA logo and the school logo and the stethoscope they give you has your name and the ABVMA logo on it....really just ceremonial stuff I think. (except the stethoscope we'll actually use). We're getting fitted for lab coats and coveralls tomorrow I believe.

Each class gets a different color stethoscope too which is kinda cool.

We wear ours for rotations. We have three rotations each block of first year (so 12 rotations total) and then I think there's five per block for second year. Third and fourth year are all rotations. So for two rotations, we have to wear scrubs plus the white coat (as well as a name tag, stethoscope, and penlight) and then one requires professional dress under the white coat.
Someone passed out in anatomy lab today, I guess due to a combination of the formaldehyde and heat. Kind of scary!

We got blue coats at our first year coating ceremony, and we wear them with scrubs to anatomy lab (and probably other labs in later years, like parasitology maybe?); we have another coating ceremony to get our white coats (with short sleeves) before we start clinics.

We get blue coats as well; no white coat until graduation. The general idea is that any time we go downstairs (where our teaching hospital, animal handling labs, etc) are held, we're either wearing our coat (for small animal) or our coveralls (large animal).

Week #2 is complete!!

I had a bad case of... Im gonna fail out of vet school earlier in the week... but I made it through our 3 quizzes better than I anticipated.. now we have a 3 day weekend and then next week we have a micro quiz, Cell bio exam 1 and our first exam in anatomy over the thoracic limb... Its gonna be a long weekend!

Oh yea- today was College colors day and the class of 2017 beat the other classes in % of people wearing Mizzou colors so we won free bagels for breakfast a day next week- wahooo!!! 😀

Our schedule is pretty similar to yours. Our anatomy covers both limbs though. 🙁 I did ok on our quiz today, but I definitely had my "I have no idea, so here are all the words that might go with that arrow" on a few.

How will all this info stay in my brainnnnn :scared: :scared:

Gosh, I am just so darn excited. 😀

We were outfitted today with coveralls (short-sleeve and long-sleeve), 2 lab coats and 2 sets of scrubs. The clinical skills building where we'll be a few times a week doing actual hands-on stuff all year every year is so gorgeous and I worked with the equine surgeon that runs a lot of the clinical classes which is awesome. Our class is nicknamed the Manatees (each class gets an animal) and I had no idea the school had a hockey team (Vet Med Freemartins...). Ahhh I am on cloud 9 right now. I'm sure that will change soon.

Paying off my credit card this month has not been fun though....

I am there now 🙁

I can't seem to settle in. I still don't feel totally unpacked or organized and still have a bunch of shopping I need to do for my place to feel complete and uncluttered. I can't seem to focus on studying and already feel behind! I am really regretting not moving down here earlier.

Let me know if you need some help with anything. I'm trying my best to stay on top of things, but I think whatever you do, I don't think anyone is ever going to feel 100% on top of it.

I feel you guys 🙁 I have had a melt-down/crying sesh like every day. I am so afraid to fail...

My first breakdown was Thursday, it wasn't over the work or school so far I've really enjoyed that, but over other 'stuff'.

The beginning of last week I HATED vet school. Seriously hated it. I think I have now accepted my fate of studying all the time though. Thankfully I really really love living out here, so it's made the transition so much easier.
I'm applying for an after hours crew position at the teaching hospital so I can continue to remember that all animals want to kill me.
This is our first big week with a quiz and two exams plus an anatomy practical. Should probably kick my butt into gear and start studying...

Nothing like having your husband drop you off at school after church to force you to study while he goes to his parents for an undetermined amount of hours...

My plans for the day: study study study.

"But tropictuco, you can't possibly study all day! You must take breaks!"

"Fine, I will take breaks. To clean my trailer, go to the grocery store, apply bug repellant, and give the dog a bath."

"Those aren't the breaks I was thinking of tropictuco...."

Haha yep! It's funny how everything must be cleaned when you have a lot of studying to do😉

Funny, I'm exactly the opposite. I think I've been doing pretty well with the school part so far. I've been getting into the habit of spending at least a few hours every day studying, and classes are decent. But I hate living here. I don't like my apartment and that's making it really hard for me to settle in.

I am counting the days until I get to move to my new place - still have 41 days to go. 🙁

went to anatomy lab today and I feel like I got nothing accomplished.. I tried to make labels so that I could label the muscles and that was a big flop.. so Ive resulted to studying the pictures our professor has posted for us.. which I think has helped some-- considering his dog is perfect lol anatomy written exam/ practical is friday.... its gonna be a looong week.

We are just starting with bones, radiographs, and cross sections in anatomy. Glad we don't have to know any muscles for our first exam.

We have our first quiz on the muscles and bones of the thoracic limb and thorax tomorrow.... So many origins and insertionssss

I'm scrambling at the last second now to make arrangements for someone to look after my cat for a couple days as the field course that I'm starting off with has me 3 hrs away in Edmonton for two days this week......

My parents have backed out of looking after her at the last second, despite assuring me all summer that they would be happy to take her if I had to travel for school.

I was really hoping not to have to pay for boarding if at all possible..... 🙁

Good luck on your quizzes and tests guys! :luck: I hope you managed to have some fun this weekend. 🙂

Cowgirla did not lie about the obnoxious first histo quiz. It took me three minutes just to figure out where/how to put my answers. Then I instantly regretted that I had to input answers. :d

Yeah, that was interesting...

Rocked the first histology quiz, don't feel to confident about the first anatomy quiz it was so much information to learn. We had all the bones, muscles with origin, inssertion, blood supply and Innervation, then all arteries, veins and nerves of the thoracic limb. I studied my butt off and yeah I know I didn't fail by any means but I didn't rock it like I wanted to.

I'm horrible at stark memorization. 🙁

I'm jealous of you all with your quizzes. All we have are exams, and our first one isn't until next Friday. The nice thing is that our exams are only on Mondays and Fridays. The not so nice thing is that I have 2 tests a week for over a month... And our first test is in physio 🙁

I felt the same way when I was hearing about everyone's quizzes last year. Our first anatomy exam was the entire dog minus the head. I definitely would have preferred multiple quizzes before an exam.

Agreed. I prefer having all our little test points just to check in about how the teacher expects answers to be and make me study each portion with appropriate understanding. Also takes the edge off just a bit when you are constantly in learning mode with a quiz/test weekly.

You'll be fine! If you need anything... Anything at all, don't hesitate to let me know!

We only have midterms and finals =/

Yep, no quizzes for me really. I think there'll be one pop quiz in physio and that's it this semester.

First exam is anatomy on Friday: all the bones in the dog, spinal nerves, and a dozen or so muscles in the limbs.

And then two physio exams a week apart 🙁
