Anatomy lab and lecture exams : check.

Usually I take Fridays off (I slept all afternoon at least), but tonight's agenda is studying for microanatomy because the exam over a month's worth of material next week slightly terrifies me.

Tomorrow night will be for alcohol consumption.
 
Currently freaking out over anatomy (breaking news, right? :laugh:). But really.....who covers all six skeletons in one 75 min lab and has it all down? I realize there's a large amount of self-study required, but I figured we would at least get the full week before moving on.....

And I hate Dyce. Reallllly wish we weren't forced into using it.

A while ago in another thread someone mentioned a somewhat shady website that has a bunch of free books online for download in pdf format. Makes me really glad I didn't shell out the cash for Dyce or Millers because I haven't looked at them once anyway. But my point is, Escalla if you weren't already aware of that site, PM me and I can share and maybe you can find a book there that will suit your fancy (without having to fork over another chunk of change).

This. I did say that I like Dyce, but I should have specfied "for AFTER anatomy". I don't know how much use it would have been during anatomy. I used it during second year and now in third year when I need to quickly look something up like a major nerve or a diagram of hoof tendons or something. I don't think it's detailed enough for first year anatomy though.
 
Thanks for the suggestions! I've ordered Veterinary Anatomy of Domestic Mammals since some upper years said it was really useful.....hefty price tag though.....😱

I'm unfortunately forced to use Dyce quite a bit since the prof tests right out of it, but I just can't learn the material with only that. There's a lack of lecture material too, so the textbook has to be my lifeline. I wish I could manage with PDFs....I just have to have a hard copy in front of me to absorb anything. It certainly would save me a lot of money if I could make do otherwise. 🙁

There's a bit of notes that go along with a podcast, but there's so little contact time, it's impossible for them to lecture through everything. Histology is combined with Anatomy too....also relying on podcasts and have to learn most of the material on our own.

Let me just say....I am so grateful to have taken some anatomy and histo in UG. I would be so screwed otherwise.

I have the same problem, I downloaded Dyce and it's useful if I want to look up something specific, but I really can't study from it on the computer. Which is weird because I read lecture slides and type up my class notes on the computer and that's fine, but for whatever reason e-textbooks just don't cut it for me. I'm going to buy Pasquini as soon as the hold comes off my bank account next week. Fortunately, our school bookstore has it at a really good price!
 
From a person who refuses to get an e-reader because I would much prefer a hard copy, I totally understand that. But I can make myself deal when that much $$$ will be saved, at least for non-essential texts.

Just thought I'd offer Escalla, just in case 🙂

Regarding anatomy textbooks.... I have PDF's of little millers, big millers, and dyce, and use them all a little bit. Little millers when I want to read text, big millers and dyce more for the diagrams. Has anyone used Kumar's "Clinically Oriented Anatomy of the Dog & Cat" though? I think it's a relatively new book but the pictures in there are amazing. Everything is so clear (especially muscles!). We have copies in our library but I haven't shelled out the money for one myself so no comment on the cost.
 
I'm really starting to stress about midterms, especially Immunology. I have absolutely no idea how to study for that class. :scared:
 
So when you guys were studying the skeleton....how did you go about it? We were kinda just given models and told to have at it.....I don't know where to really start (and Dyce sucks). Any suggestions? Like learn by region across all species? Or learn one species really well and then learn the differences from there for all the others?

We only have to learn the dog right now, so I've been using this a lot: http://www.real3danatomy.com/bones/dog-skeleton-3d.html

We're given one "bone box" per lab group, and since my lab partners have had it all semester this website is the only thing I've had to study bones from. I find it helpful since it highlights the important structures and allows you too rotate the bone to see them from different angles. I usually keep a notebook handy while I play with the simulator and jot down notes on what each of the structures looks like. Seems to be helping.

I'm lucky to have Kumar for anatomy (he teaches at Tufts! 🙂), and thus we are required to use his textbook and little Miller's. I personally love his diagrams too, but the text can be a little dense in places. He integrates A LOT of clinical perspectives/important useful details, which makes it a lot more interesting and relevant. I think we paid around $160 + shipping direct from the publisher because it's a new revised edition this year.

I love that CSU site! The UMN also has a very helpful site: http://vanat.cvm.umn.edu/SiteMap.html, which is along the same lines. It goes through all the labs, and you can toggle labels on structures off/on. Like the CSU site, it has some quizzes as well. 😀
 
Survived the second anatomy test. Not as bad as I was fearing... conquered the brain (I hope)

Today I really really hate vet school. this week sucks. I was in a bad mood already and now this week is making it one million times worse! Hateeeeee

Right there with you..... When only 9% of the class gets a clicker question right, you know SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT!!!! :scared: :scared:

This week sucks. Period.
 
Yeah, it sucks, don't it?

I won't say it sucks less, but you get used to it sucking. Less panic attacks, more apathy, and less freaking out after exams (OMG WHAT DID I PUT FOR THAT ONE? turns into OMG SHUT UP ABOUT IT I just want to get my brain ready for napping). You get used to multiple exam s in a row and your brain gets used to absorbing all that info like a sponge just to wring it right back out again and repeat.

However, I am not envious of firsties, and I would not take anatomy again if I had to in order to graduate. I'd give one big F that S and then walk away.

You always know how to cheer us firsties up, haha. Next week I will definitely be on the struggle bus... phys 1 exam, histo quizam, Jurisprudence & ethics exam, and phys 2 exam... all in 4 days. 👎

It's so screwy for y'all to have phys I and phys II at the same time. Whoever thought giving that bald man more teaching time was a great idea was probably mistaken...

But TT is right - you'll get used to it. And then second year will be harder. And then third year will be harder. But you get used to it incrementally and you realize you're doing way more than you ever thought you could. /cheesefest. (Auto correct wants that to say cheese feet, haha)
 
Anatomy quiz went fan-****ing-tastic. Was nice to do well not OK on something for once.

Now I'm totally unprepared for physio... whoops.

Started on our dogs yesterday......and they tossed some blood in the shark tank, so to speak.....there's a Golden Scalpel award for the group with the highest quality dissection with the highest grades on the in-class practical group quizzes. Names and pictures on a plaque on the wall. Not sure how many vet students exist without a stronger than average competitive streak in my class, but I think they're a minority. Should be interesting....

And now I'm not surprised by the profs continually referring to us as "pseudo-Type A's". I think the pseudo can be taken out for most though....Me? I'm probably too lazy to be considered either. :laugh:

Apparently with most previous classes, the gunning has died down a few weeks into school. All the upperclassmen say our class is really bad about not calming the **** down by now. As soon as any grades go up, someone posts on facebook asking if anyone knows what the class average was... sigh.

Gunner qualities come out when it comes to equine-related stuff, but nothing else really triggers it I've found. Like the award for top grade in the 3rd yr Equine Med & Surg class? I will be vying for that, without a doubt. Anatomy? I'm not going to kill myself trying. Just trying to get through it.

I don't give a **** if a person wants to be a gunner. There's just more subtle ways to go about it and I don't know why people don't make use of those more often.



Edit: I'll probably be a gunner in Therio too. But really just in things that I'm particularly interested in.
 
Also, was talking with my faculty mentor at the mentorship dinner last night about summer jobs. He's recommending to get business cards made with a picture of myself (to put a face to the name) for networking purposes.

Has anyone else been given this recommendation? I think I'll work on that this weekend. I know exactly where I want to be this summer, the trick will be if I can get the connections to make it happen or not.

(Is this gunner-like? ****.)
 
So far this week: Two quizzes down, one exam to go tomorrow and then both my anatomy exams friday!!! Ahhh!! I want this week to be over... wait... no I don't. I have a Physiology exam on Monday...
