Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
He is consistent. Consistently confusing. That and he loves the awkward all/none type answers... usually E.

Histo is obnoxious. Look at old exams hardcore before the final - that helped me out a lot.

Ha. Sounds like one of our histo/microanat profs here. I swear he'd have:

A) blah
B) blah
C) blah
D) none of the above
E) some of the above
F) all of the above

.... and, of course, it'd play hell with the OCD types in the class who would freak out because of the logic bomb (f doesn't technically make sense even if it's the answer he wants).

Ugh. I don't miss his exams. I once got 40% on a T/F section of an exam of his.

Hang in there. You guys will pass histo!!!

Undergraduate microbiology was this for me, no joke. I hated that professor.

Our annual "variety show thing" had a skit about our physiology professor who has crazy multiple-multiple choice. "Dr. S is holding a lunch lecture. he would like to know what kind of pizza people want...a) cheese, b) pepperoni, c) cheese and pepperoni, d) veggie, e) mushroom and pineapple" etc. It went on to z and was hilarious.

*shudder*

Brings back memories from undergrad. My microbiology professor used a scantron that had A-T for each question...

And it was lists, lists, and more lists. Any question could have multiple correct answers, or maybe just one, and it was all or nothing and no extra answers or no credit. And multiple as in, not that there would be an answer choice for multiple answers (i.e., D for all the above), every single letter was a different answer and the machine would just read your multiple bubbles. Blech...

VTPB 405? >_>

I'm glad our histo exam could bring back such horrific memories for everyone.

Haha! Histo practical was pretty delicate on my brain today, thank heavens. But my "should be an easy A" ZooTech exam tomorrow might give me fits as I have zero study time spent here.

I made like an 80 on that dude. Zero Fs were given.

... I mean f*cks, but I don't think anyone made an F either. So don't panic.

So I'm having a little trouble finding foundational veterinary text(books), which are not simply the perfect paperweight... Are there any books that you've found to be indispensable? I'm hesitant to purchase books that I will not use.

I recently purchased How the Immune System Works because it was mentioned above and I found that it was a nice quick way to get my feet wet in Immunology again. So thanks for that! 😀

Eventually, you will definitely need Fossum for surgery, and maybe Nelson or Ettinger as a SA reference. I dunno about LA.

Other books may depend on your classes, your interests, and what you need some extra help with as far as references.

Since my school is PBL format we choose all of our own books. The main ones I read and LOVE are Path by McGavin (it gives an overview of normal phys before telling you the pathophys which is really nice for hard to find topics), Path by Jubb and Kennedy (a little simpler than McGavin, I use it as a supplement), Duke's physio, Pathways and Parturition (it has these great flowcharts and summaries everywhere!), How the Immune System Works, Immuno by Tizard, Anatomy by Dyce, Ettinger is great for SA, and Reed is phenomenal for equine. I actually learned most of my muscle phys in general from Reed. Fossum is good for sx. Thrall is the best rads book out there, and I think that Hand is the best nutrition book (some schools get this one for free). For pharm I like Maddison the best, but some people prefer Booth.
I'm happy to send screenshots or anything if you want to sample the books 🙂 I have them all in ebook format.

I second the recommendations of Senger's Pathways to Pregnancy and Parturition for reproduction and McGavin's Pathologic Basis of Veterinary Disease for path. Those two and How the Immune System Works have been the only ones that I've actually used outside of class. Only the path book was required at my school, but the other two were recommended and proved helpful.

Sorry about two posts, but I have the ebook version if the path book and it's amazing. The "real" book is huge, and with an ebook there's the handy search function. It's been a lifesaver.

Thanks twelvetigers and Rwwilliams! I'll definitely look into those - maybe the clinical ones a little later so my brain doesn't explode. 😀

Rwwilliams, did you buy them or find them somewhere to download? At first I wasn't keen on the ebook format, but it definitely beats carting a mountain of paper around. I might be able to view some of them through preview on Amazon or BN; however, I'll definitely take you up on it if I can't get sample pages.

Lets just say no money exchanged hands for those books.

That is a bummer. It sounds delicious!

I think I can confidently say that Halloween will not be happening for me. 🙁
Boo to that! I should be home around five, enough time to slip into my crazy scientist outfit and get ready for the kiddies to come by and collect their candy. I am really excited as I think I live in a pretty decent family neighborhood and should have plenty of fun costumes to see. Only time I like children. Halloween.

First OSCE tomorrow. Can I just say that I'm scared out of my fecking mind? All the skills are pretty simple, but they have such detailed procedures and if I commit a fatal flaw, I fail....the time crunch doesn't help either. I can't tell if I still feel nauseous from my rabies vax or I'm scared enough to be sick.

I will be drinking very heavily tomorrow night.

I'm wearing my costume to school. I'm definitely grown up enough for professional school 😀

I'd say about 75% of our class is dressed up right now. And our guest lecture this morning was the Pope. 😛

Our student affairs team dressed up as "Student A-fair-ies" and brought us candy today. It was awesome.

There were tons of great costumes at AVC today, props to the 2017ers! (I almost always dress up at school for Halloween, but with surgery lab this morning, I couldn't be bothered.)

We're all dressing up tomorrow. 6 other people and I are going as Shark Week. Gonna be awesome.

We did minions and our immunology professor dressed up as Gru. =D

About 1/3 of our class is unaccounted for right now. 🙂

What did you dress up as?

We're ALL mad here...

Im alive! I made it through hell week and didn't fail out. Feel really good about embryo and immunology. I felt bad about endocrine but that grade came out today and I managed a B+. =D

Studying like crazy for my phys midterm this week. Also managed to land the random draw for 2 presentations the day before the exam. I have such good luck...

I feel like I can't catch up with life. 🙁

And I'm not doing as well I thought I could reasonably expect. Something has to give and it may just have to be SDN.... 🙁

Barely. And I'm finding that vet school itself doesn't jive with how I study best. I have to write stuff out and make study guides out of written notes to really memorize things, but that's damn near impossible. Might as well try and sip from a fire hose.

I dunno. Meeting with some professors to see if they have any advice. It doesn't help that my grandmother took a turn for the worst a couple weeks ago and I lost her last week. Now I have to resit the OSCE cause I was such a mess during the whole thing and didn't achieve the minimum.

I used to relatively enjoy it. Not so much anymore.
