Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hey guys, looking for some quick VetPrep advice...today is the last day to get the 180 day subscription with the extension through the end of the December testing period. I was reading through the last page or so of discussion regarding the VetPrep deals. Is the deal that comes out in May a price break with extended time? Right now there's no price break but it's extended through December. I'm still in classes through late April and I know I won't be doing any VetPrep until then, maybe not even until I start clinics in late May. So would it be smarter for me to wait until the May deal? Is the deal something that is definitely offered every year? I just don't want to wait for that deal and then be stuck when it doesn't happen.

Then my next question is the standard version vs the premium with the power lectures. We were told a few weeks ago that if we pass the NAVLE on our first try, we get a $600 scholarship so I'm kind of wanting to splurge a little on the prep for the test and get the premium. But I'd love to hear if anyone has seen/watched any of the power lectures that come with the premium and if you found them helpful or a waste of precious time in clinics.

I think the Power lectures are good, it just depends on your learning style. If you buy the regular version it gives you some of them for free and you can choose to upgrade at anytime, I didn't simply because I'm more of a reader.

I think I've heard that Zuku and VetPrep generally do a buy 3 months get 6 months sale in May, but don't take my word for 100%. Someone else may be able to confirm.

I did the may deal. Instead of paying the cost for 180 days, you pay for 90 days and get through December.

I didn't purchase the one with power lectures, wanted to minimize costs as much as possible. I doubt I would have ever used the lectures anyway, but that is just me.

I didn't really touch vet prep much until September and even then it wasn't very often. Wasn't worth spending extra money for 180 days. Especially since I was still just trying to survive third year to get to clinics.

Thank you guys! I guess I will wait until May. Just have to stifle the anxiety over all of my friends buying it now lol I know myself though and know I won't be using it until at least May so it really does seem pointless to buy it now.

Ask them their total % completed come May 1st and then snerk at their 3% as you pay less for the May subscription.

But really, if you started to study now, even with real progress, you would forget a lot between now and November, AND you'd hate yourself for it. You get sick of it as it is.

I like all of this validation for my decision to wait until May to think about the big VetPrep vs. Zuku debate. My classmates too are all panicking about this decision while I hadn't even considered thinking about it until May... I do my daily questions, that's enough for now right?

I didn't intend to get vetprep until May. I asked my parents if they would help out and Mom jumped the gun and bought it already. Whoops. Can't complain about free vetprep though! I got the Premium with the powerlectures. I like them because I learn well by watching podcasts and listening to lectures but it definitely depends on what your style of learning is. I haven't really looked at many questions (and don't plan to for awhile) but I've used the some of the power pages as concise study guides for my classes this semester.

more than enough

I did use the power pages and thought they were useful. And I did complete all of vet prep before taking my test. But so many of my classmates didn't and still passed.

I just went and checked to see if I had hit 1% out of curiosity (I did 25 or so questions). Just realized the percent is out of the total practice questions AND exam questions. So vetprep this year has 4964 questions 😱

Also, Thanks vetprep 🙄

Not only that but it only counts questions answered correctly. So you have to get 50 correct questions in order to go up 1%

@allieh8607

Coincidently enough I found this in my mailbox today

I've liked having the power pages to use as some review during medicine classes but really yeah you don't need it this early. I'm not doing study questions yet either, I know it'd be a waste of time.

Lol that is the sheet that has been scattered all over every flat surface on campus this past week because one of their reps came to talk to us. I'm tired of looking at it! 😛

Here's some info that the AVMA put together on NAVLE study habits from the c/o 2015: . It has data on the test, and when most people started really studying. I think there's more, but I haven't looked that closely at the prezi yet.

Starting my food animal medicine / surgery rotation tomorrow... I am a bit nervous because one of my good friends has been on the past couple weeks and the clinic is crazy busy right now... I am excited to get a whole new experience under my belt, just a little nerve racking because I have very little food animal experience (as in zero lol)

You'll do great, KPow!! Food Animal is a lot of fun from what I hear 🙂

I just finished Community practice/Shelter. Loved the rotation and got a lot of surgery experience (well, a lot for being at the university). I did 4 dog spays, 3 dog neuters, 2 cat spays, and 1 cat neuter. Funny how it worked out like that.
Today I started Pathology. It'll be... Okay. Not the greatest or the worst rotation. Not looking forward to smelling like death everyday. But will learn a lot!

I saw 3 pictures of you today shared by the shelter med service, looks like the mobile unit is a big success!!

Good luck on Path!! I've heard it's a good review for boards, but there is a bit of busy work involved. are you starting with clin path or gross?

So far food animal has been pretty fun- we went to the sale barn yesterday and I actually enjoyed wrangling the small ruminants. I'm sooo glad I didn't start on In-house, one of my classmates was at the hospital 36 hours straight... They are so so so busy right now.

I'm looking for ideas on what to back for lunch or snacks during clinics. Specifically stuff that doesn't need to be microwaved and preferably something I can eat on the go quickly (not messy/don't need a fork). I like granola bars but sometimes they can get old. Any ideas?

Kind Bars. They come in quite a few varieties.

Fruit, dried fruit, chips, cereal (without milk)... honestly, I probably had Gardettos and Dr Pepper for lunch/dinner more times than I care to admit.

For my internship I keep granola bars, nuts, fruit snacks, and crackers in my desk. I sometimes buy dried fruit from trader joes. Goldfish crackers are another staple. For lunches, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches are my staple when I won't have time or access to a microwave.

I'm a protein bar addict - Zone Perfect or Pure Protein. They taste great, are quick to eat, and OK if you eat a bite and save the rest till the end of the shift.

I generally packed some kind of real meal (ie leftover dinner from the night before) but I also kept a giant container of those Planter's variety nuts in my bag. I was a big fan of protein shakes, protein bars, granola bars, soda for that caffeine buzz later in the afternoon, fresh fruit... I was the queen of snacks.

I did a lot of granola bars. Other ideas: fruit/veggies, sandwiches, nuts, crackers/cookies, bags of pretzels/chips. I definitely had days where I pretty much didn't eat all day, but more times than not I had a minute to sit down to eat (I brought a lot of pre-made salads).

Thanks for the ideas! I bought some Kind bars today to try out. I don't like coffee or dark chocolate so that narrowed the choices a bit but I got the Pomegranate Blueberry Pistachio and it was delicious 🙂 Excited to try out other flavors! I'm fan of plain dry fruit and nuts so I'll have to stock up on those. I'll probably end up eating a lot pb&j (or fluffernutters!)

Clinics started last week for me, but due to various illnesses (both my own and clinicians) and the relative ease of my current rotation I feel like I haven't really started yet.

I survived day 1! Did my 2nd solo dog spay. Excited to do more surgeries for the next two weeks. 😀
Also, apparently all my rotation-mates claimed dislike horses, but I'll forgive them this one time...
I hope you're prepared for the number of times you're going to be peoples' savior because you like horses, lol. I treasured you guys in my blocks that made me deal with them.

My last final is at 8 on Thursday and then I start orientation for ICU nights at 4 pm that day. :nailbiting:

On my third day of food animal rotation and I'm exhausted! Ended up euthanizing my first patient in the first day so that was fun...

It still feels weird to not have any immediate plans to go back to the island. I have a reliable car and a phone with a data plan...starting to feel like a real person again. Moving to Indiana this weekend and starting orientation for clinics a week from this Wednesday! First official rotation doesn't start until May 31st but I'm already feeling the nerves.

Officially done with my first rotation! Ended up liking Shelter Med a lot more than I expected. Hopefully my other small animal rotations are at least half as fun. 🙂

Driving to rotation #2 tomorrow in PA. Can't wait to be back with the horses. Problem is I can't stop packing - my car is going to be full! Weather is going to vary between high 20's and mid 70's...

Last week was probably my most difficult week on clinics so far. 1st half of the week was finishing up ECC and the second half of the week was the start of Onco (we rotation change on Wednesday). I had some really emotionally demanding cases, plus long nights and early mornings. Thursday I felt like I was just not on my game at all. This weekend I have done nothing but sleep and clean my house.. I have never been so exhausted in my life..Friday night I slept walked for the first time since I was a child... I apparently got up out of bed turned on my iphone flashlight and was trying to find my dog who was in the bed with me and my husband.. And I was asking about Fred's Sister.... but Fred (our dog) doesnt have a sibling in our house haha.. Then last night I was talking in my sleep about Fred having OSA and how he needed his pain meds.. Clinic brain never turns off.

<3 <3 Onco and I also oddly loved Optho last block. Next week is Food Animal... should be an interesting change of pace for 6 weeks.

Take me back to onco. I love it so so much- I told you that you would love it!! Our faculty and residents and onco techs are simply amazing.

Ophtho was probably my favourite SA rotation at our school. So neat, and I really loved how much diagnosis could be done with just a good exam and a few tests. Onco not so much, but one of the residents complained that the weeks I were on were the "worst of his residency" so that may have coloured it a smidge.

This has been an exceptionally emotional week. One of my onco patients from last week that started radiation for a macroadenoma wouldnt wake up from anesthesia after treatment.. an MRI showed evidence of him throwing a clot to his brain 🙁 his mom was amazing and he was such a sweet boy... On the same day, my internal patient was a 2.5 year old berner with a nasal mass - turns out it is a sarcoma and further imaging showed it had metted throughout the lungs - MST of 3-6mon with chemo. Mom was devastated and tells me she just lost her other dog to osteosarc 5 months ago. Then today, I have a 1 year old dog come in with Dysautonomia (weird disease only found in the midwest with unknown cause and no treatment)...Owners didn't want to be present so the intern had me push the plunger 🙁 first euthanasia that I did myself... It makes me so sad when the owners don't want to be present, I feel so bad for the animals not having their people surrounding them 🙁 Im very thankful to have the weekend off to recover from this crummy week.

@Kpowell14 Chin up, internal is practically over 🙂 And I hope you feel better!

I am so so sad Oncology is over. This really makes me second guess about specializing... I really don't want to have to do an internship (or two)... but I really enjoy Onco so much. Onto Food Animal for 6 weeks tomorrow!

Today was my last day at my first shelter preceptorship. I really don't want to go. This is where I got my first job as an adult. I gained so much experience here and learned so much. It's like home to me. The vets and support staff have been awesome the last two weeks. Volunteers who were here before I started vet school said hi and wished I was back for good. I wish I could spend all of fourth year here. I did 72 surgeries while here which is amazing considering I haven't done any since February. I'm also leaving with a foster dog (who will probably be a foster failure).
