Class of 2017.... how you doin?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
we have one girl that asks questions about horses just to make herself look like she knows ish about horses.. just the sound of her voice drives me insane.
We have a couple like that too =/ I like horses and all but when the question isn't relevant to the material, you might be better suited to meeting the professor during office hours.

Not really looking forward to this block too much. From the second years, they say this is one of the toughest ones. Hopefully it will go by fast- especially since the first week is almost done!
Same for us over in CA 🙁 This block is neuro/endo all in one. We had a nice slow week of optho last week and have been thrown straight into neurology and I'd be lying if I said I knew what was going on.

OMG im so glad we finished neurology already. I hate that subject. But now they are trying to relate all the other body systems to it and I'm like PLEASE NOOO!

Agreed, I hated our neuroscience class. This block is collectively called the 'dark' block since we get in when it is dark and then leave after dark. We have quite a few classes on the GI system right now (Microanatomy just finished covering the digestive system, GI phys, and nutrition). Let's just say I'm already tired of it!! Now time to go out in the 20 degree weather for clinical skills today, brrr!!

I LOVED neuro. Maybe I'm in the minority. Haha

Is our curriculum weird that we don't take neuroscience? It's offered as an optional elective.

We never took "neuroscience", but we definitely have neurology... had it first year for normal physiology stuffs and have it again this year when going over specific diseases/conditions.... Need to know how to localize lesions, how the nervous system works (upper vs. lower motor neurons), reflexes, etc, etc.

Ours wasn't really a neuroscience course either, it was 1/3 neuroanatomy, 1/3 neuropathology, and 1/3 clinical neurology.

Why?! We have neuroscience the first semester. Complete anatomy all of the nuclei and the tracts, cranial nerves, action potentials, and a whole lot more.

Hahahaha

Who could you POSSIBLY be talking about?

lol. my least favorite person in our class lol

this is what ours was like too.. at first I hated it, but then near the end when things started to make sense I started to not hate it so much. I would never EVER want to be a neurologist though.

I also liked neuro after I understood. not so much the anatomy part, but more clinically diagnosing stuff. "Localizing the lesion"

YES. I liked neuro through all the coursework... fell in love with it fourth year. work with Dr. L over in the clinic as much as you can- he's the reason it all makes sense to me now.

I think would have enjoyed neuro more if it had been taught in a way that actually made sense to me. Part of it was the professor (who's been teaching here since the dark ages), and part of it was how poorly organized the course was. I just ended up getting really frustrated and barely squeaking by on those exams.

Does everyone have today off from school? I'm loving this 3 day weekend!

Yes, but I need to spend it studying for my exam tomorrow, which I've spent the rest of this weekend procrastinating. 😉

Nope. Sadly Canada does not care about MLK.

I was wondering why people would have a 3 day weekend right now. This is what happens when you leave the US, you forget about all the mini holidays. Also, UK does not care about MLK either. (But we have a 4 week Easter break, so I am not too horribly upset about missing out on one day off)... 😉

Random US holidays: MLK day, 4th of July, Memorial day, Labor day. I think some places close for President's day but not schools.

Canada has Labour Day (we just spell it differently). We also have Victoria Day and Canada Day, and most provinces have a random February holiday ("Family Day" most places, "Louis Riel Day" in Manitoba or "Islander Day" here in PEI.) There's no such thing as Prime Minister's Day though (and I'm pretty sure anyone suggesting one would be a laughing stock pretty quickly.) I will say that the US seems to have way more holidays that Canada though. How many of those holidays the average American actually gets off, that I don't know.

4 WEEKS?!?!?! I'm pretty sure we don't get any time off for Easter.

We start clinics May 5 so I think most US schools get a bit more time for summer. That said - I'd rather have more short breaks. I'd give up summer if we got a week off every 3-4 weeks.

I totally would stay in school an extra 3 weeks in May if it meant we could have winter break for 3 more weeks. What we got was definitely not enough time to mentally prepare for another semester. I miss the 6 week winter break we got in undergrad.

I'm with you. Short breaks are nice; get away from class for a bit and catch up on some sleep. But...there's still work to be done and school is on the mind. At least for me. I'd rather have a longer break between semesters which I know will be major stress relief.

Mostly I just know that come October or March, I need a break - at least two weeks worth.... maybe if that could happen. The rest would be fine.

I get spring break and then one week between finals and clinics and that's it this year. 🙁

I actually like getting out earlier in the summer. The weather's nicer and it cuts down on traveling too. We have that 5 day break in February and that's enough for me I think.

Also, there are 102 days until May 2, but who's counting? 😉

we dont get out until June 27th 🙁 so far away, and our only break between now and then is a week for spring break.

We get 5 days in February ("spring" break...) and the weekend between finals and clinics 🙁 I think we've managed to shuffle our finals around so that we have more time, though (hopefully).

Second week and I am still having an incredibly hard time settling down and not squirming uncomfortably in my seat for the four hours of straight lecture. I am also still watching way too much netflix instead of studying. Why won't my body and mind just give up already?!

I am having the exact same problem. I got some studying done this week, but mostly I just lay in bed and watch Netflix. Can't seem to motivate myself to do anything. This is bad.

Why is this semester so awful. Probably makes it worse that I whine every 10 min in class about how awful it is.

It's the same down hear in sunny Florida. No motivation whatsoever.
