Class of 2018...how you doin? ;)

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Speaking of anatomy.... Does anyone have any tricks to remembering the various arteries that branch off of the celiac, cranial mesenteric, and caudal mesenteric arteries? They all seem like such a spider web of a mess to me right now.
I normally just draw it out 8328498 times until I get it, though perhaps you can think of a silly mnemonic or story for them? Also, if you are a practical/logical learner, you can think about where they are going (Like left gastric is the on the left side of the lesser curvature on the stomach, or the cranial pancreaticoduodenal is the cranial branch heading towards the pancreas/duodenum).

Thanks Ashgirl! I guess the white board has been such a good friend thus far.... Might as well keep it that way 🙂

My whiteboard has been my absolute saving grace. I use it all the time.

Another tip that might help is think about (or draw) landmarks as you draw it out (like X nerve goes through Y and Z muscles and courses with V artery to innervate U muscle). This really helped me in the practicals when I'm not sure what the artery or nerve might be, but I can then either backtrack or know what's around it and I can usually figure it out.

I second what ashgirl said. I drew out a visual chart of those arteries and it really helped me see how they all connected together (for some reason I just couldn't wrap my head around it when I was rummaging around the abdomen). Then the best thing for me was just learning the names based off of which organs or parts of the organs they were going to since they all make sense in that regard. I also kept mixing up the gastric arteries and gastroepiploic arteries until someone told me the gastric goes to the lesser curvature of the stomach (since it's a shorter word) and the gastroepiploic goes to the greater curvature (since it's the longer word).

If you know some of your classmate (or feel comfortable asking), see if they will compare notes with you or something. We are very fortunate to have two study coordinators that collect information from the class that they find helpful. Whether it is drawing, tables, quizlets, etc. that they did themselves or things they have acquired from upperclassmen. You have to go in reminding yourself that some things may be wrong, but for the most part if someone finds something then it will get flagged or they will let the class know. I tend to make my own notes and then compare them to what others have posted on our study website to see if I may be missing something that I did not think was important.

I have tried studying with other people, but I feel like I do better by myself because I start freaking out if I do not know something. Not my thing 🙂

Thanks everyone! Lots of good information here....now to just put it into play 😉

Fall break next week  This means I can catch up with my class work! Good times.

The fair grounds in right across the street from our campus, to make life easier for most of us (parking and traffic) we get the week of the state fair off. We start a little earlier than the other schools.

Wulfpack----why you being so mean? We wanted to go to the state fair but......NO, we have to go to class. j/k TGIF!!

We may not get a fall break, but I saw this from a boat today 🙂

No Fair! We get 3 days for Thanksgiving.

Then we get a winter break...sigh.

It's what we wanted, right?!

Anyone else feeling that mid-semester slump? Maybe it's because I'm exhausted after my microanatomy exams from this week, but I have absolutely no motivation to go over notes or study.
My attention span in lecture is starting to wane as well. I seriously can't wait until Thanksgiving break.

In other news, we are starting a new class (neuroscience!) tomorrow. Here's hoping it won't be too brutal on top of everything else.

My attention span in classes has been nonexistent for weeks now... It's really bad. It gets to the point where it's much more productive for me to stay home and go over the slides myself than sit in class, then I feel guilty 😛

Felt super prepared for my Immuno midterm this morning...only to be b*%c*slapped by reality. Hopefully I made some good guesses!

Tomorrow we have a Ethics Dinner for our correlates class. We get a nice meal and talk over an ethics case with 2 practicing veterinarians. Seems pretty interesting...plus free food!!! I'll also be doing surgery on a rat this weekend! And attending a seminar on parrot medicine. Very exciting!

We had an amazing little dinner lecture tonight from a cardiologist just talking about what he does and all the SUPER COOL things he gets to do... May want to become a cardiologist now.

Midwestern gives us a 3 week break in November. I'm planning an externship, before visiting my family for thanksgiving.

Amazing what vet school can do to you! Finals are one week away. The last week I have sustained myself mostly on coffee and Chocolate. Can't wait for that three week break though! Planning on getting back into the real world clinic situation for a while! Woo Hoo!

First OSCE down, and overall I feel pretty good about it. I think I blew one station for sure, but I didn't fatal flaw so there's always that. Hope everyone else is surviving exam season! (at least it is here....) 🙂

Last anatomy exam (excluding the final) was on Friday and for once, I felt like a did pretty well. Hopefully that'll be the case! Also had an amazing weekend full of exotic/wildlife wetlabs including rehab medicine WITH REAL RAPTORS OMG, rabbit dentals, sea turtle surgery, ferret abdominal surgery, wildlife necropsy, and several types of handling labs with MORE REAL animals. I also networked with multiple vets and exchanged business cards and just...gah!!! So exciting! It's days like these that I'm so happy and grateful to be here.

Hope everyone else is having a good time! We're almost 1/8th of a doctor! 🙂

Umm that sounds amazing and I am super jealous!

Sounds super fun! We have a few of those labs too and it's always such a great break from all of those hours in class! 😀

So, anyone else in that pre-Thanksgiving slew of exams? I have 7 exams total, 4 next week (renal phys, neuroscience, and 2 gigantic pelvic cavity/pelvic limb anatomy exams:scared:) and 3 (2 microanatomy exams on organs of the cardiovascular, lymph, and integument and finally cell bio on cancer and heart failure) the week after. Oof. I'm ready to go home for turkey day and the "fun" doesn't even start until tomorrow!

We don't have Thanksgiving in Grenada :\

Wow, some of you get done earlier than we do! Though we get a whole week of for thanksgiving thank goodness! It's going to be a NICE week, though sadly we still have 2 1/2 weeks after we get back :/

Yikes! Your schedule is definitely worse sounding than mine, I'm in the midst of a hell week of 3 finals (immuno, small animal anatomy, and ophtho), and then we just have a parasitology quiz before we head off for break. I cannot wait to relax a bit!!!

That sucks! 🙁 It's my favorite holiday.. I hope you're at least planning on doing a potluck dinner with some friends. Thats what I did when I was living abroad, it made it a little bit more bearable.

Our SCAVMA chapter holds a Thanksgiving event for us where everyone either roasts turkeys or makes other side dishes, so that will be nice 🙂

We just have Immuno & Physio (endocrine phys mainly) next week plus a few Histo quizzes thrown in, then Thanksgiving, then a week to cram, then FINALS. Eeek! We go Behavior, weekend, Anatomy, Immuno, one-day break, Physio, and and finally Histo. I'm sooooo glad Anatomy is happening first (I'm not counting Behavior) because I'm pretty sure my mind will be burnt to a crisp by the time Thursday and Friday roll around. Our Anatomy final is going to be a whole lot of head questions since that's all we have left to do--nerves, vessels, muscles, and 10490239 parts of the skull.

Go to vet school they said. It will be fun they said. Puppies and kittens all the time they said. I don't know what day it is half the time. Sometimes I don't know where I am, who I am, or what I'm doing.... 😵

In other news, anyone planning on going to the SAVMA symposium in Minnesota this spring? I just registered yesterday!

 Definitely wasn't anyone here that said those above things...

I totally get how you feel though... I have definitely forgotten what day it is and basically had to be reminded that it is indeed Tuesday and not Monday.

I kept thinking it was the first week in November, so I failed to mail my mom a card before her birthday. =/

I forgot how old I was the other day when filling out some paperwork. Scary.

The Symposium falls at the very end of our Spring Break, so I dunno if I'll be going or not. That's awfully far north, too. I'm already miserable with the barely cold weather that we're having here in South Texas now. ;_;

I am not 100% sure if I am going to the SAVMA symposium, I am trying to figure out financials first.

It's currently 27 degrees at Purdue. This southerner can't deal 😱 but people keep telling me it will be warmer come spring break 🙄 I'm going to NOLA that weekend otherwise I would go to the symposium. Sounds like a really good opportunity and the wet labs look interesting

Oof. Anatomy exams today were super rough. The practical was tricky, but the written just ripped me a new one. So many obscure facts that I've never heard of before, and I seriously studied for it too...

Oh well, only 3 exams until an entire week for Thanksgiving break!

Stop, you did well. But the Chinese buffet definitely helped us forget about how terrible it was. 😕

Onward to micro! We got this.

There will always be exams to kick butt on in the future, no worries. We always have those that just don't go well (trust me 😛). Just kick butt on the final (and then you'll be done with small animal anatomy, woot!)

Hey, it was getting above freezing during the day up here in mid-March last year. That's practically balmy.

I'm missing SAVMA since my bf wants to come visit for spring break so we'll probably just go do something fun but I'm planning to go to the NAVC conference in January! Anyone else going?

I'm going! Doing the VBMA conference over the weekend then Monday and Tuesday I'll be doing NAVC stuff I think.

You crack me up.

But I do agree - the written was butts.

Finals time... 1 down and 4 more to go. I wonder who's idea it was to have Physio today and Anatomy tomorrow... having them so close together is cruel :poke::bang:

And I got registered for the SCVMA symposium the other night. Looking forward to it!!
