That night, after the movers left, I went out to the bar down the street with my friends and had too much beer. We played trivia and won. Then I slept on the floor and woke up the next morning to pack up the rest of the stuff into my car, clean the apartment, and get going. That took a good 8 hours. Then it was a 7-8 hour drive by myself with the animals. But just as I was packing up my car, one of the neighbors (a supposed "private investigator" who called himself "the professional creep") who I had never actually talked to in the two years we lived there walked up to me and started asking me questions about the landlord's whereabouts and comings and goings. Thanks for the send-off, creep! Ah, memories. :laugh:

Honestly vet school is mostly only difficult because you have to learn at a break neck pace. It's not usually the material itself. And if I can do it anyone can 🙂

Me too. Moving is just too much work. I think I have too much stuff. Plus, I swear I must have the heaviest bed ever! That thing must weigh a ton! Glad it is behind me.

Props to you. Here I am being a big baby bc my fiancé will be at Grad School 6 hours away for about 1 year.

All I can say, is that if there's a will, there's a way!
 
So... I'm to attend RVC and have just finished my first AHEMS (equine). I have worked at my area wildlife rescue facility for three years and gave advice to the barn manager at the stable about how to deal with some baby skunks that were living under the tack room. Instead she just hauled off and shot them and tried to make herself feel better by giving me some ridiculous excuses.

I am trying to set up the next AHEMS with pigs soon and am trying to decide if I should just submit the wildlife work I have already done for 2-4 weeks of the non-required species or if I should try to get in something else that I will enjoy and might help me down the line.

I am kind of sad I didn't accept my Glasgow offer and have been back and forth with myself every minute about going or not. I haven't submitted for financial aid yet because I can't until hopefully later this week. I therefore can't apply for my visa and I haven't bought a plane ticket. When I want to go it's because I'm really looking forward to learning about vetmed but I also am super afraid of the debt. I've never even had a credit card and I was angry at myself for taking out loans after finishing undergrad with a minuscule in comparison debt load. This process has actually made me less upset about the undergrad loans hah. I also have been thinking a lot about how many times I have told a person what to do and they may have just shot it instead. I recently quit my job in order to do AHEMS and prepare to move. I was feeling a little burned out, cold-hearted, and tired of what I consider a special type of animal-people interpersonal drama. I loved my time working at wildlife rescue and after I made myself realize that people just didn't know and were trying to do a good thing when I talked to them, I've really enjoyed educating them. It's awesome to know that next time that person will understand that fawn is supposed to be laying there curled up waiting for it's mom or that that fledgling bird is just trying to learn how to fly. Or maybe they just shot it instead.

I just want to go dive.
 
I submitted my visa application and made an appointment to proceed with the next steps. :nailbiting::scared:

Definitely getting pretty antsy over here... not to mention really excited, a little nervous, and mildly terrified. 😛
 
I'm actually not. It's weird. I was anxious about the move, I was anxious about money things (not so much the loans but paying for everything between when I quit my job and when loans are disbursed). Being in a new place by myself is a little stressful. But the actual school thing hasn't touched my nerves yet.

Yeah, school is kind of familiar, in a way. I'm anxious about school in that I know it will be difficult and stressful, but it's easier to feel like you have a plan of sorts. And it's easier to ignore right now because classes haven't actually started yet. :laugh: I'm glad you're not feeling anxious, though. How are you liking your new place?

I'm freaking out about everything else. The move - both the logistics of the actual move and the adjustment. Being away from my husband and how that'll affect our marriage. The loans and the money. Dealing with the pets and how many I may be able to cram into the apartment without getting caught. My elderly parents and ailing grandmother. It's a lot.

And as part of the packing process, my husband wants me to help him throw things out. We do have stuff we don't need or use. We do need to get rid of some things. But I tend to save things. It's not to the level where I have a problem, but it can be tough for me to throw away things that have some significance or bring back certain memories. (Thanks, mom, for secretly throwing away my possessions over the years and lying to me when I noticed.) And I don't like being wasteful, so I do things like mend clothes and save them for dirty tasks like gardening/cleaning or I save used candles, melt down the wax, and make a new candle with a new wick by adding the old batches of wax layer by layer. So I save things because they may continue to be useful in the near future. But going through stuff is exhausting and throwing a lot of it away is even more exhausting and stressful, so I'm not looking forward to that either, even though we really should do it.

Oh and we have too many f-ing books. Freaking nerds. :smack:

First: I feel you on the books. I told Mr. DubZ to buy a bunch of storage things of some kind for moving them, just however many he thought he could fit in his truck along with the furniture he was moving for me. He got 6 of those square-ish plastic crates. And I still had to leave at least 1/4 of my books at home!

Yeah, it's definitely easier to ignore school because it's all abstract right now. I'll start having those first day stress dreams soon enough I imagine. But it's also easier to not be stressed about school when all your stress is taken up by real life things.

I did a bunch of getting rid of stuff before I moved (really enjoying the new place, by the way. Very happy I decided to live on my own.), and then I got here and realized I didn't get rid of as much stuff as I thought. My makeup collection alone... :drowning: The good thing is when I found something potentially sentimental but not exactly useful, I could just leave it at my mom's. She doesn't like visible clutter but if it's packed in a drawer or closet somewhere it's safe!

Well my move just got a bit more interesting.

1. We just got a phone call from the truck rental company that the place we were scheduled to pick up our truck tomorrow is now closed until Wednesday. They told us that instead we could pick up the truck from a sketchy storage facility 45 minutes away from my house. So we call the sketchy storage place to confirm that they in fact have the truck we reserved. They have no clue what we are talking about, and have no truck for us. So then we call the rental company again and they promise that sketchy storage facility will in fact have a truck because someone is supposed to be turning in one today. Call sketchy storage again to confirm this and make sure they will hold it for us, they said that yes, someone was supposed to turn one in at noon today and they would hold it for us to pick up tomorrow morning... except it is almost 2pm and that truck hasn't been turned in, so that person is late turning it in and who knows if they even will. Asked what the back up plan is for if they don't have our truck for us, they told us that they have a 22' truck in stock. We rented a 12' which is the smallest size they have. This is a nationwide really well known truck rental company too.... I feel like this kind of thing shouldn't be happening.

2. We just looked at the weather forecast, it is supposed to rain the entire two days we are supposed to be moving into my apartment and unpacking. It is also supposed to rain majority of the drive. Oh boy.

I hear ya on the animal thing. Miraculously we found a place that allows our three cats and two 50lb+ dogs but I am still waiting for it to all fall apart even though the lease is signed and sealed with deposit. She has yet to meet the two sweet lil' pittie mixes 😎 they better be on their best behavior. and I am still debating on trying to cram another cat into the place, but I think I'll wait on that one. We move August 1st and have only two weeks to hit up garage sales and settle in. but I am SO EXCITED to start learning! :soexcited: Luckily my sig. other has moved with me or else I would be experiencing a whole other world of anxiety that would do me no good in school.

I was so nervous about the possibility of being evicted and/or forced to get rid of my cat (I live out of state - what am I supposed to do, mail him to my parents?) that I went out of my way to find a place that was good with him. It's been good so far, and luckily I only have one kitty so finding a place wasn't too difficult. Not sure what I would have done if I had larger dogs or multiple pets.

Yeah I paid the $600 pet deposit so my cats would be legit...turns out it's a good thing I did because otherwise I would have had to leave them in my car for half an hour on move in day while I did the paperwork and walkthrough with the property manager, since my fiance and my mom got stuck in traffic that I magically avoided.
 
I did find a place that'd let me have 2 pets, but I have 1 dog and 3 kitties. My roomie has a cat. I'm bringing 2 of 4, and she's bringing hers. We're already breaking the rules. But this place has a weight limit on dogs, and I know for a fact that other students live there with dogs that should technically not be allowed. One has a GSD. Nobody from building management is going to look at a GSD and think "yeah, less than 25 lbs - good to go!". So I'm hoping for some benign neglect. Luckily I have family an hour and a half away should anything happen.
 
I actually had trouble finding a place in Oregon that didn't already have/allow pets. I was getting really frustrated. Even in what was supposed to be a non-pet place, there was a person who expressly stated that she got service paperwork for her dog so that she could have a dog without paying a pet deposit. Luckily, I found a place that worked out though. Dang allergies.

Ahh I guess I got really lucky with my place! The apartment I found in Philly is technically not pet-friendly, but the landlord has allowed it for vet students for years, so there's no pet deposit or anything either. I've heard that that's a thing elsewhere too, have you guys all tried asking directly, mentioning you're a vet student, even if the ad says differently?

Yeah I tried that at a few places. The place I was going to live last year did that, waived pet fees for vet students. Seems it's the only place around here that does that, but it was out of my price range for living alone.

How do you like living alone so far? Technically I live alone right now (my roommate is out of town until mid August) but I don't know if I like it that much. I purposefully tried to get a roommate who was a year or two ahead of me in vet school so I could have somebody to vent to/get support from who I could do the same for. Plus, I needed someone who could see me crying/complaining about a class and tell me "Everyone hates that class, you're fine, calm the **** down".

Then again, I also have a lot of self destructive tendencies and I think having supervision might be necessary to keep me alive. :laugh: When I was in undergrad I had a rotating group of people who would take me to lunch/dinner on campus because otherwise I would forget to eat that day. Not a good thing, those tendencies are something I've been working on but they're also sorta why I wanted a roommate.

Anyway, back from my rambling - how are you liking living alone? Getting settled into your new place okay?

I actually like it. I'm a bit of a hermit by nature (maybe I shouldn't give into that, but whatever). I like not having to worry about my cats getting along with anyone else or their pets. I like that I don't have to feel bad about leaving dishes in the sink until the end of the day, or waking up too early/going to sleep too late, or whatever else. I loved living with my best friend all four years of undergrad but we are basically the same person, and even though I am one of the most agreeable people in the world and tend to get along with anyone, I just don't see having that kind of luck again. Plus I think I'm doing pretty well (I mean, if you forget that I tried to cut my thumb off today and almost started a fire a couple days ago). Cooking, keeping things relatively clean, getting things unpacked in less time than it usually takes me. I'll probably forget how to talk to people irl until classes start but that's fine :laugh:

Plus it was the best thing for me since hopefully Mr. DubZ will be joining me here in a few months.

Good to hear! Glad it's working out well for you. I can be a bit of a hermit as well but then I usually get bummed out and then still never talk to people because I'm apparently a grumpy hermit, so it's nice to have humans to force me to be social lol.

I can also agree with you 1000% on the cat front. While I think it's good for Lil Mac to learn how to play well with others and he's been getting along okay with Jared, it was definitely added stress for him when we moved up here.

Also, don't worry about your thumb. I hear those grow back. 😉

The number one rule of cats is that kitties are bad. You could not let them sleep for the next 24 hours and they would still decide to be up at 5 AM just because they know somewhere in their kitty hearts that it inconveniences you. This one simple rule dictates all cat behavior and health choices.

One item will change this for you: automatic feeder.

They may still bug you later, but it cuts down on the waking up behavior

We did have an automatic feeder but it ended up being a bit problematic because the cats eat different food and are both huge food hogs. I have to feed them in separate rooms so I know nobody is stealing food/eating more than they need and with an automatic feeder it's a bit harder for me to supervise who is eating what.

I don't have many problems with them waking me up at odd hours though, my guys are usually pretty quiet at night/early morning. Usually if they wake me up early it's for snuggles or because they're going wild over a toy they forgot they had.
 
Cindy wakes me up even when there's still food in both bowls (I try to get them to eat the food designated for them, but it's not prescription or anything so a few shared munchies isn't a big deal). I was doing meal feedings but that made the waking me up thing worse, plus she tends to puke if her stomach is empty for too long. Or she'll overeat and regurge. She's the problem child, Gandalf is totally fine with whatever and only ever wakes me up in cute snuggly ways 😛

When I was a kid I had a fat cat who would eat as much food as he possibly could, puke it up everywhere, and then try to eat his puke. It was disgusting.

Very glad mine have never done that...Cindy will just go back into "I'm hungry" mode immediately after puking.

Aidan was a very special cat. He used to drool uncontrollably when he was happy as well, it's how I figured out that I was allergic to cat saliva because I would wake up with huge rashes on my chest every morning. He liked to sleep on my chest at night and it apparently made him really happy when he did.
 
There's a cat at my barn that meows loudly and comes running whenever he sees me and it makes my heart happy 😍 He's a gem.
 
Feeding one meal at night made a huge difference in my household. Especially when juniper was younger and I didn't have a set daily schedule.

I love when people do this, especially because the ADA expressly states that no paperwork is required and that no one is even allowed to ask what your disability is that necessitates a service animal. All they're allowed to ask is "Is this a service animal?" and "What service does it perform?" Yet, people go and spend $50-100 on this "paperwork" that they never needed.

Cats DO like thread! :heckyeah:

But yeah, I thought it was cute that he drooled too, just... also kind of gross. The first time we cam back from a trip after we got him he drooled so much he left this huge puddle on the floor. He was a needy little cuddle bug.

Why have I literally never thought to give them their food at night instead of in the morning until this very moment...
