I took all of my micro classes there (general, pathogenic, food, and aquatic micro) with Dr. Doucet, who was the micro professor before Dr. MacLea. I absolutely LOVED micro there!!!! The only reason why I transferred up to UNH Durham was because I had taken all of the science classes at UNHM. Of course, I transferred before they started offering orgo there which I was so upset about! I tried to sign up for orgo I there, but it was all filled up by the time I could register and ended up taking it at UNH Durham which was a shame. I was able to take orgo II at UNHM with Dr. Reynolds though and it was the best chemistry class I had ever taken! She made it so easy to understand and, oddly, enjoyable!

Oh that's a shame, but yes about Dr. Reynolds. I think her intrinsic joy is infectious and it just spills over :laugh:
 
I'm gonna go against what I would normally say and tell you to take the car.

I cannot tell you how many people I know that had to get a new car almost straight out of vet school. And some during vet school. Not to mention you're getting a $5000 "bonus" which should make up for the difference in interest.

I’ve had my current car for almost two years and never had any issues with it but it’s definitly possible that I will start having problems with it in the future. I obviously can’t know that for sure but it would be more comforting to have a newer, more reliable car to get my through vet school and then last me several years after school while I’m busy paying off my debt. I’m worried that if I don’t take the offer of a new car now it will be at least 10 years or so before I can afford to buy myself one. Thanks for the advice, it’s a tough decision for me because my dad told me he would pay for my first year of school up front. Then I would only be taking out for loans for the last 3 years.

Again, I had a 4 year old car in vet school and needed to replace it halfway through. It's just my experience saying that you want one you can trust for at least 5 years. Being a new grad with new loans and needing a new car is a rough situation. Since you have first year paid for, you wouldn't get that close to $5000 in interest saved from 10k. And depending on the brand, the value of the car may not depreciate that much.

You can get Microsoft on a Mac. Check with your school to see if you can get download codes for the software. I know my school has that.

Is it a bad idea to lease a new car during vet school? I'm leasing my car now (but I do work) and the payments aren't that bad. I don't really worry about it because it's a new car. The financial officer at the dealership said never buy something that will depreciate in value (i.e. cars), but he could be biased ;P

If you intend to keep a car more than 3-5 years, it makes more sense to buy it

If you're the type who wants an upgrade every few years, like having a nicer car than you could reasonably afford to buy, or if you see yourself changing your car out sometime soon (potentially moving to somewhere with a different climate or amount of traffic, having kids, etc), leasing makes more sense.

But, from my understanding, buying a car is always cheaper in the long run. If you want to run it into the ground (like I do!) buy it. I bought a 2 year old car in great shape back in 2008. I haven't had a car payment in 7 years, and I expect to keep my car at least another 3 years (so 10 years payment free). I also find it hard to believe that the depreciation on the car would be more than a lease (the depreciation clocks in at like $75 per month for me; if I'd brought it brand new in 2006, the depreciation would have been about $110 per month on a $17,500 car. But, I imagine those numbers might be a lot different for a more expensive car).

Also consider your life style in vet school - will you be driving more to come home for breaks? Moving somewhere with a potentially longer commute that you have now? Leases cap out your mileage per year - driving home to visit family on breaks combined with my average daily commute would push me over a lease limit. My two dogs (often muddy, constantly in the backseat) would probably also increase the wear and tear on a leased car too much to be a reasonable choice for me. At the moment I also live in an urban area and often have to park on the street - my car bumper has gotten some scrapes and dings over the years that would probably would be a no-no for a lease.

This lifehacker article ran a scenario on a $20K car over five years, and showed a savings of $6,752 (they used a 3 year, 6% loan) https://lifehacker.com/5858640/should-i-buy-or-lease-a-car. If there's a specific car you like, crunch the numbers for yourself to see what the better deal is - there are several online calculators that can help.

In unit laundry is lovely because you don’t have to take your laundry somewhere else and can just leave it for a while, but if it’s in the same building and not too far from your room it’s not too bad. Especially if some of those people you share it with are dicks who take your laundry out before it’s dry and just leave it anywhere (which could be the floor *insert upside down smiley face*) because Their Royal Highness Self needs to use the laundry machines🙄🙄🙄

But the possibility of having a dog is nice just in case. Unless that’s actually a far fetched (heh) idea for you

All of this. Dilemma: apartment 1 coin op laundry but allows pets cheapest option. Apartment 2-in unit laundry but no pets approximately $200 more monthly than option 1. Apartment 3- in unit laundry and pets approximately $300 more monthly than option 1
ETA: you know fighting that whole go with the cheapest option part of my brain.

Have you looked into Birch Hills? I know several vet students in that complex.

Birch hills was the most expensive one I'm talking about they have phase 2 single bed rooms for $795 I think it was with in unit washer and dryer and then pets. Pimlico is option 2 and then an apartment rentals is option 1.

Maybe start with the cheaper (non-dog) place because what if you end up NOT getting a dog (you decide you'd be too busy or whatnot), then you're just paying more for no good reason. You can always move after a year to a pet friendly place 🙂

If you don't have a dog now, I would go no dog since it will keep you from getting one and I can't imagine how stressful a new dog/training/running home to let them out/tearing up an apartment etc in vet school will be.

Yeah I was gonna suggest this too. Since you’re not signing a multi-year lease, might as well start out in the non-dog place and then move second year if you wanted to get one.

Have you looked into buying a mobile home? I can’t remeber if I mentioned the option to you before, but lot rent is $350ish in Golden Hills (the nicest park in Pullman, others are cheaper) and then mortgage payments are usually around the same depending on the loan size you need. Would probably be your cheapest option for in Home laundry that’s pet friendly 🙂

Ugh still can’t decide on which school 🙁 every time I think I have decided I get swayed back to the other school. I know I still have a few weeks to decide but I don’t think I will be any clearer by that time 😳

I have! One city is smaller with a lower crime rate and lower cost of living and the other is basically the opposite but it’s a warmer climate and I love the city itself. I feel like my heart is telling me one thing and my mind is telling me the other 🙁

If cost of school is the same go for lower cost of living. You can always use the money you save for a trip somewhere warm on break.

This is a great idea! Since I'm moving cross country I'm definitely using some of the money I saved by choosing the cheaper school to go to places cool but close to school for trips.

I think I’ve asked a million questions of both schools! I’m just a very indecisive person but the cost being the same is really making it difficult.

My parents are paying for my living expenses so I personally wouldn’t be saving any money! Although I definitely want to save them as much as possible. The cost of living isn’t a huge difference but it is something to consider for sure.

Flip a coin... and if you're disappointed in the answer, do the opposite.

If costs are similar, tbh it'll all shake out in the end. A school is a school is a school, and you'll be a vet at the end with all of them. 🙂

They may be paying for it now, but it's some point you'll take over. Are you going to stay in the city that you go to school in? Are you sure that you're going to move out of that City? If you plan on staying longer than school then go with the cheaper City, or go with the city you would want to stay on long term

Since I will be OOS I will probably move back to my home state after school but there’s always the possibility that I will stay. I hadn’t thought it it that way so thank you!

I’m starting to like the flip a coin idea! I’m going to visit the school that makes the most sense on paper this week so if after my visit I still feel unsure I might just flip a coin 🙂

I went to undergrad oos and ended up staying in the city for 10 years after graduation. I got married and have now moved to another state, still not my home state. You just never know. Yeah, my parents paid for my housing in undergrad, and so it didn't matter that I moved to a pretty expensive city, but for those 10 years, I definitely wished I had been in a cheaper area... but my wife couldn't easily find work in her field just any where. Keep in mind life events happen, and money will majorly matter at some point.

Also (not to be Debbie Downer), your parents' financial situation could change. My friends parents lost one income while she was in grad school and all of the sudden, she was taking out loans and paying for living expenses when that hadn't been the plan. It definitely set her back significantly and she almost left school to move back home due to personal and financial stress due to the situation.
