Class of 2022...how you doin'?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So RNG, luck, and trades were super duper in my favour. 😍 Ended up with a schedule I'm pretty thrilled about. Got my #1, #2, #3, #5, and #6 electives, several of which were super competitive to get. I don't know if I'm willing to commit to putting my schedule in my signature, but here's what my final schedule for the year is:

Beginning of summer:
ECC rotation

Starting end of August:
Small Animal Majors Surgery - Oncology - Cardiology external - Diagnostic Pathology - Small Animal Medicine (4 weeks) (+NAVLE?) - Neurology external - Externship (ECC/IM) - December break - Anesthesia (4 weeks) - Large Animal Surgery - Sled Dog external - Equine Field Service - Large Animal Medicine - Medical Imaging - Vacation - DVM!

Sled dog externship??? That sounds amazing, I’m so intrigued

It was my number 1 elective, so I'm stoked I got it. There was only space for 3 students. Technically it is an external rotation (the school arranged it and we are supervised by faculty, it just doesn't take place at the VMC). One of my best friends is on it with me, which is just a cherry on top. Plus one of my favourite faculty members.

Basically I'll be part of the vet team at an Iditarod qualifier. So we are working 24/7 for the duration of the race and sleeping for an hour at a time on a floor or in a vehicle somewhere. Being February in the Northern hemisphere it will probably also be -40C lol. But we follow along with the race, do checkpoint checks, and then administer any needed veterinary care on the fly. The portion of the rotation before the race we get to visit some of the kennels to learn how the dogs are managed, and a little birdie told me we get taken out on the sleds one day. I'm so excited for it, I've wanted this rotation since it ran for the first time while I was in first year.

Did they decide to expand it again? Last I saw they wanted to shorten it to normal again this year but that was a few months back
I just checked and it looks like the expanded it *slightly* so it’s 2 whole months (11/1 to 12/31) instead of just 4 weeks. Not nearly as long as your guys window though (sad bc I def would’ve taken it early)

oooh that is longer than when I looked like a month ago. Looks like they added several weeks to the window.

Yeah they just announced it today or yesterday

I'm just glad it overlaps with 5 of my rotations now instead of being rigidly stuck between 2

Yeah I had looked a week or so ago and it was the short window too. Excited it’s longer, sad it’s not longer on the front end. I’d totally take it end of sept or in October if it were

Fingers crossed that this makes it a little less stressful for us to find seats at our preferred testing centers 🤞

I'm just excited I can get all the way through my equine rotation in November before I take it now because I will probably never know more about them than I will know on the day that I finish that rotation haha.

Just finished my last didactic lecture, last lab, and managed to pass my last OSCE (probably the most exciting thing ever because nothing stresses me more in vet school than those high stakes OSCEs )

Four finals down. Five to go, Then a week of freedom before clinics.

Clients to come back in starting Monday 😳
Also official scrub colors assigned and white coats supposed to by worn starting then. Not gonna lie... I liked not having to wear the white coat :pigeon:

White coats suuuuuuck

You don't like wearing one of the most easily stainable objects in the known universe while you stick your finger up dog's butts?
My mom yesterday said that I should get white shirts for clinics even though I am prone to staining white because, and I quote, “if you’re going to stain a white shirt, you’re going to stain a yellow shirt” so apparently that means I should test the Vet Med Spirits with wearing white shirts too

but you can bleach the heck out of white, and you can't do that with colors.

i mostly wear patterns that mask blood splatter well.

I actually like my white coat(s)... I have a school one and spare

It has so many pockets! Keeps me warm! Hides stomach and covers my butt when I bend down! And it does protect from some stuff -- I like that I can ditch it during the day and bleach it if I have to.

I don't like that it's not fear free. Was thinking about dyeing it a light gray color or something, but then that takes away the bleaching option.

Gotta dye it some crazy very overpowering color so you can just re-dye it instead of bleaching.

I used to always tie-dye my lab coats. Felt much more fun.

Here we aren't given white coats, we get these crappy little blue smocks that look universally ugly on everyone and fall apart within days of getting them. Only positive is they are hard to stain, because I spilled a bunch of mushroom chicken sauce on mine yesterday and it still looks fine, plus all my patients like how I smell now lol. Idk why we use adaptil and feliway when chicken juice is a readily available option

I also like white coats for many of these reasons.

Am I really wearing dress clothes under here, or is it just a tank top?? You'll never ~know~. The additional warmth is also a huge pro.

Plus I have several really silky grey's anatomy ones... and an assistant who is really good at getting the stains I inevitably get out of them (this is a very big positive contributor to liking them. Not having to wash them myself).

I prefer my multipocket jacket for warmth and storage. But also no business clothing required at my clinic so that part's not a consideration  I do have a nice one that I got for clinics that somehow mostly survived, now I just use it when I'm in the lab.

My parents bought me one of these for my at home white coat ceremony and I wore it twice as much as the school ones. The school ones aren't comfortable. Even after a year of washes and use, they're still stiffer than a corpse in rigor mortis and fit poorly.

Started my first rotation yesterday and have absolutely LOVED it... but now our teaching hospital is having an outbreak of Covid-19 and I'm trying to decide if it's in the best interest of my immunocompromised family member to withdraw from the rotation 🙁 Just feeling really sad and bummed right now..

1 more exam... I can do this right? Really I just want to sleep and pretend nothing is happening. I think it's my body's defense mechanism because it knows it's not going to get to sleep in for awhile😴
I've been going to bed before midnight for a few days now...which is very unusual for me. My body is also over it. We have our first final tomorrow, then 1 Monday, 2 Tuesday, 1 Wednesday, THEN we IMMEDIATELY start clinics Thursday (Wednesday night for some of us that are in ICU) 😳
Lordt help us all :dead:

That’s insane that you don’t even get the weekend off after finals

Big oofh! Good luck! Thankfully we have a very relaxed transition. We took our big clinical proficiency exam on Tuesday which we get 4 chances to pass (like literally probably going to have to retake it because of formatting issues-I couldn't find tests I wanted). Then we have a huge soft tissue exam tomorrow.
Next Monday/Tuesday is our financial webinar, Tuesday or your assigned day is a full day of acquainting to the VTH and general procedures. Friday if you have a rotation in the VTH you start otherwise you start the following Monday. It will still be a dumpster fire though with people being assigned random ECC shifts from primary rotations.

Some rotations do but it's mainly the large animal rotations and off-campus preceptorships. Small animal in-hospital rotations start bright and early Thursday morning. Should be interesting and exhausting!!

One exam left in the morning and then it'll be a wrap. Only problem is I've never felt quite this level of anxiety simultaneously with complete apathy.

I want to be excited for clinics but potentially starting off day one with a 18 hr shift makes it very difficult 😅 And I get my second dose of the Covid vaccine right beforehand so here's hoping I don't feel too terrible that day.

So I got bored the other day and put my stuff up on AVMA job board-because why not right? I didn't think anything too serious of it especially being so far out from graduation. I got a ton of emails, texts, and phone calls initially. Only a few actually fit my criteria because apparently most places just blast applicants and don't bother to read geographical or species interest. Regardless, I sent a few applications out to a couple places back home earlier this week since I had some down time before clinics get crazy. As a result I have 5 clinics that I am in the process of talking to: 1 phone interview, and 4 tentative visits for when I go back home later this year. It's a weird thing to basically be sought after and barely trying especially so far out from graduation 😳 The job market is HOT y'all.

PS it's way too early for all of this to be happening. I am in shock and don't understand how I have gotten to this place in life. 😬

It's true! A lot of clinics are suffering to find associates right now.
