CSU c/o 2019 applicants, where y'at?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also look in Bellvue and Laport. Pretty close (20 min drive) and you may find cheaper housing. More likely to find a farmhouse to rent in these locations, if your looking for something like that. Plus closer to the canyon.

Probably a little premature to be thinking about housing already, but does anybody know anyone who commutes to CSU from Loveland? I've heard it's do-able for the first 3 years at least, but that you really need to be in FoCo for the fourth year. My husband and I really need a decent sized apt/ house and for cheap.
I am a 3rd year and have lived in Loveland the whole time. I am on the West part of town and my commute is right around 30 min. A friend of mine who lives on the East side near 287 has less of a commute.

So I just realized that CSU is not even reading eLORs this year. How crazy is that?! They just want 3 ETS PPI evals. You still need eLORS for VMCAS, but I just feel bummed that I've carefully chosen my evaluators and now my target school doesn't even want to read what they have to say! :wtf:

I didn't like that either.... 🙁

Thanks @Violetvet ! I'm pursing a DVM/PhD... so starting as a graduate student this year, while also taking some of the veterinary courses. Orientation in a week! ahhhhhh!!!!

Fort Collins is awesome so far though, if anyone is curious. Wonderful view, friendly people, and so many nice running and biking trails! Not to mention all of the breweries and delicious local food. Coming from the east coast, it was a bit of a change, but so far very good changes!

I applied for this program this year!!! How do you like it so far? Can you post your stats by any chance? Thanks!!!

Can I pick your brain. I applied to the same program this year...

does anyone know when CSU starts to call out for decisions?

good luck everyone!!!! 😀
It depends if you are applying for a dual program or not. If you are, anytime from now through the middle of November. Otherwise Dec-Jan I believe. On my CSU application, it still says "Awaiting VMCAS." Does yours?

Mine says it's waiting for VMCAS too.

They haven't received any applications from VMCAS yet.

Born and raised! At my undergrad, if I said, "Well your mom works on Colfax!" no one understood the joke....

This year I applied to only Colorado and Kansas. Colorado for the money and closeness and Kansas cause I got an interview last year.

Yeah, I love Aurora. Everyone bashes on my side of Aurora and I'm like, "Y'all never been to Montbello before have you?" (No offense if that's where you're at; it's just Montbello isn't the best....)

Hi everyone! I have been watching this thread for the past few months but I just joined SDN!
I was wondering if any of you out there applied to the CSU/UAF collaborative program?
I am from Alaska so have heard a lot from in state, but don't know much about what others in the lower 48 think about it.

I'm excited about that program but ultimately had to choose between it and the dvm/phd program.. I'm interested in research and wildlife diseases... 🙂

I live in Thornton but work in Aurora... What kind if vet med are you interested in doing? Small animal?

Thornton is nice. I have an Aunt/Uncle/cousins who live up there and my dad used to work up there.

I am feeling a few things. My top pick would be emergency medicine. But I was also thinking of working exclusively in canine genetics, but don't really know how I would go about that. A third option I was thinking was working exclusively with pet stores/licensed breeders since there really isn't someone doing that, but it would be a pretty niche market. So definitely really feeling the emergency medicine.

How about you?

Nice! I like that innovative breeder idea!

I am interested in a translational practice. I applied for the dual DVM/PhD program so I can do research on diseases that affect wildlife, companion animal, and human populations and translate that into my practice as a wildlife veterinarian. I am very anxious to hear back... I am supposed to hear back anytime between now and the middle of Nov for the dual, but it looks like CSU hasn't even uploaded the VMCAS apps yet. But I am sure everyone is equally excited to hear back!

I thought about the DVM/PhD program too, but I didn't think I would be able to handle it. I give mad props to the people that can. Good for you! 🙂. Wildlife is super interesting stuff to go through I bet. I have a friend from my undergrad that has been volunteering at a wildlife rehab place for the last two summers and is going to go for the Disney World Animal Kingdom internship; and another friend from Michigan is going through that internship right now. I couldn't imagine what wildlife is like.

That is awesome! Ya we'll see. This is my first time applying and needless to say, I didn't do well at all on my GRE (can't take standardized tests well). Did you do research previously? On what?

The only real research I have done was for a class sequence in undergrad about the MDR1 gene in herding dog breeds and the mutation of it that leads to ivermectin sensitivity. Right now I am doing a pet project where I got a hold of the intake and output of all shelters in Colorado and I want to look at the success rate (so adoptions, returns to owners, etc) vs failure (euthanasias, deaths, etc) and the relationship with those numbers and how much money the shelters raised and spent.

I am super interested in shelter statistics because there is a number floating around out there that 5 million dogs are euthanized in the US a year. I have not been able to find the study that says this (granted, I haven't looked all that hard). I feel that in order to reduce this national number, whether it is 5 million or only 500,000, is to look at where money is being spent, why and how to make the system more efficient. Colorado euthanized less than 7,000 dogs last year (something like 6,943 or around there). Seeing as 101,000 dogs went into shelters in Colorado last year, I think we're doing pretty good. What are we doing right and how can we implement this on a larger scale?

Sorry for the tangent... lol.

WOW don't be sorry at all, I LOVE that you are doing that and I am very interested in the study. Correct me if I am wrong, but I also really admire that you are doing it for your own knowledge. If those Colorado numbers are correct, that isn't bad at all, even though of course we would like it to be even lower. Keep going with this! 🙂

Yep. Doing it for me. lol. Of course if I get any insight with this, I might write something out and see if it can be published in anything. Share the knowledge sort of thing (and because, let's be honest, it would be really cool). I really hope the numbers are correct because I got them straight from PACFA, which is the governing body of all companion animal containment facilities in Colorado, which gets the number directly from the recorded numbers submitted by the shelters every year. If those numbers are wrong, then it's either because PACFA is reporting them to the people wrong or the shelters are reporting to PACFA wrong. Either would mean bad juju.

What made you want to do wildlife and zoonosis? Not many average undergrad students get exposed to that stuff without putting in some effort.

Ya that would be bad, but either way, if reports are wrong that is an issue that needs to be brought up so things can get changed! Good for you!

Well I don't directly work with zoonotic diseases in my lab, but have worked in lung development (human), lung cancer (human), taste physiology (human), as well as multiple sclerosis. I volunteer/was seasonal staff at a wildlife rehab clinic and was exposed to zoonotic diseases there (not directly lol but we work with animals that are possibly infected). I see a huge need for more research on diseases that affect wildlife, companion animal/food industry animals, as well as humans as most infectious diseases affect more than one of those populations.

Such a good point. I bet this Ebola stuff with pet dogs has been a bigger interest for you than the average vet student. lol.

haha yes 🙂 would I work with it realistically, I'm not sure...

If you've taken the GRE (which you have, if you're applying to vet schools), you get some amount of free PPI reports. So it's not extra money. Not sure why the need to post a snotty remark about a school you aren't even applying to.
Yeah but he also has to apply which costs money. I didn't think his comment was snotty, we are all big girls and boys and can deal with someone stating opinions.

And I thought it sounded snotty. That's my opinion. Be a big girl/boy and deal with it.

This might be a dumb question, but am I the only one whos VMCAS section in the CSU-account still shows as "awaiting"? I sent out VMCAS on August 28th 🙁

and yes, I'm aware of this part:
"We have recorded all PPI Reports received through OCT 9. Please continue to send official GRE scores (code 4075) through NOV 30. We have not yet loaded any VMCAS Applications and are waiting to hear from VMCAS. If you submitted your VMCAS Application to VMCAS before the deadline, we will honor your VMCAS Application."

... but still. It kind of makes my type-A personality nervous.

You're not alone. 🙂

Still says "awaiting," still annoying. Should be any day now, right?

I think we are all there with you. It is annoying... Hopefully we will hear soon!! I think you've applied to a few of the same schools as I btw!

yeah, I applied to a bunch of schools... but I truly like all of the ones I chose, each one has something else to offer 🙂
Also, I can't apply to the international schools, so I wanted to increase my chances by applying to more within the country. Maybe I see you around during the interviews 😉 (IF I even get that far >_<)

Glad I'm not alone with my status still being the same as several months ago. This process is driving me insane.

Unless you applied for a dual degree program, the status is probably not going to change for a while. My status didn't change until late November/early December last year. The dual degree program applicants get looked at first according to their phase information.

That's me!!! Hopefully soon, I'll let you guys know.

If anyone wants a rough timeline of admissions events:

Last year, regular DVM (in state and out of state) found out on December 20th. It was a Friday. Wiche students found out sometime later. All of these decisions were posted on the admissions portal, and then a day later, via email. Acceptance letters also formally came in the mail a few weeks later. Dual degree people (at least DVM/PhD's) got interview invites in November, I got my interview invite on Thursday November 14th via email. I interviewed for the dual degree in January (January 16-17). I found out I was accepted a few days later via phone.

I think people were on the waitlist way past April too, so there is a lot of time to be accepted! 🙂

Also, sorry Ive been busy and not on SDN much, but if anyone has CSU questions, please feel free to email me at [email protected]. I'll officially be entering vet school with the class of 2019! (As a dual-degree, my first year is spend as a PhD candidate/grad school). Yet, we take parts of the veterinary curriculum, so I can speak a little about my experiences there too.

Also, if anyone is visiting CSU, I can give you a ride around. I also know some tour guides, and can try to get you in touch with them if you want a veterinary teaching hospital tour 🙂

Okay so I saw somewhere before on a thread the percentage of OOS applications they accept and then the breakdown of where everyone was from. I am from Iowa and want to apply to CS... my question is - if I have looked at the last couple of years of the states that CS has accepted, and they never list an Iowa resident, do you think they won't ever accept an Iowa resident? Is it because Iowa has their own in state school? Am I being unrealistic in applying to CS? Is there some unspoken rule that OOS residents don't get accepted if they have an in state school? Just a coincidence? Just curious, thanks!!

@PreVet_ISU
There are plenty of people here at CSU who came from a state that also has a veterinary school. It is my opinion that you may not see many Iowa residents listed at CSU because 1) they chose to go to the in state school for financial reasons (CSU is one of the highest for OOS tuition) or 2) they moved to Colorado early to become a CO resident for tuition purposes. As long as you have finished all requirements for getting into CSU and it is a program that "fits" you, go for it.

I checked the application, like, an hour before @The_New_Girl did and it wasn't there. I just about had a heart attack because I thought they didn't have my VMCAS.

Also, my login e-mail keeps switching between my two e-mail contacts and it's getting slightly annoying....😵

HOORAY!!! I checked thanks to you guys, they finally received my VMCAS too :3
Now to keep on waiting....:corny:
