Does anyone know the chances of being accepted if you're currently an alternate? They don't tell you what your rank on the list is but I was just curious if anyone had the stats on how many alternates actually got spots in the past. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

Hi, CSU was my first choice because, mainly, I already live in Fort Collins, but I definitely understand why many others have it as their first choice as well. Firstly: the location. I have not toured many other veterinary schools but Fort Collins is one of the best/happiest places to live. I feel the community is really close-knit and involved. The campus is safe as I have spent countless nights walking home at 2 AM from the library and never felt the least bit unsafe. (They have a program to get an escort but I can honestly say I have never thought about calling it.) The transit has made it super easy to not have a car. They have multiple buses that go to various locations in Fort Collins so I have lived here car-free for the past year and a half. Fort Collins is close enough to Denver if you ever want to experience big-city life but far enough away so every time there is a home Broncos game, traffic is not affected.

Secondly: the program. I have worked at the VTH for a while and I can say the doctors there are some of the best you will ever meet/ learn under. I have not taken a class from those who teach vet students but if they are anything like the undergraduate/graduate professors, you will get a really good education worth the money. The hospital has just about every speciality you could ask for and if you know you want to specialize after, you could make good connections with those doctors. I know they have dentistry, exotics, diagnostic imaging, cardiology, etc. and so many doctors come from other institutions regularly to visit so you could meet a connection there as well.

I thought I had more to say, but I can't seem to think of anything else right now haha. I'm a graduate student at CSU so let me know if you have questions about FoCo in general. I can't really say much about the program specifically because I only see it externally, but I have spoken to many 3rd and 4th years and it seems like they love the school/program.

I don't think they publish stats on this, but my best friend here and I were both non-sponsored alternates. Definitely happens!
 
Does anyone have any insights on the vet prep program? Do they offer it to all the waitlisted applicants?

Seems like a good backup if other programs dont work out, as its a gauranteed spot in the vet program in a year with in-state tuition if Im reading it right.

From my understanding the Vet Prep program is not offered to every waitlist applicant. I'm not sure how they're selecting folks for that program since they've implemented interviews, but my roommate was part of that program and may know more about how they're doing things now. Like all of the prolonged programs at CSU (i.e. The ones that will take 5+ years to complete rather than the typical 4), I believe they do let you switch your residency status to in-state for tuition purposes by the time you are enrolled in the DVM program full time.
 
Hi! Made an account to ask....was anyone accepted / waitlisted for the UAF/CSU combined program? I'm an alternate and very excited about the possible opportunity!
 
I'm super disappointed when I saw my OOS alternate status. 🙁 Last year I was offered a seat but I couldn't go due to a family situation. Now that I can actually go, I'm an alternate. All I can do is keep my fingers crossed though. Congrats to everyone that got in!

Don't give up hope! I'm also an OOS alternate. Do you know approximately how many people are on the waitlist and/or how many people were offered admission from the waitlist last year?

Thank you! I'm not really sure if they release that information. I do think it was more competitive this year than it was last year, considering how I was offered admission last year immediately but this year I'm an alternate. I also had better credentials on my application this year (more research and veterinary experience, better letters of recommendation, improved GPA and improved GRE scores). That's why I was pretty surprised I didn't get it to be honest.

As an OOS student, I came into interviews knowing the program was very prestigious based on rankings and doing my own online research, but there were other aspects of the school that struck me when visiting. First of all, I was incredibly impressed with the emphasis on student well-being when touring. The cubes seemed like a great resource for studying at all hours of the day and also for making first years feel at home and like they belong. I was also impressed that mental health was brought up during the tour and that there is a counselor just for the veterinary students that they have access to at almost all hours of the day.

Additionally, I thought the Fort Collins area was super beautiful. It seems like there is definitely not a shortage of things to do and explore in the area. I also feel like the sun in Colorado makes the cold more bearable than it is on the east coast, where it's cloudy/rainy a lot of the time. (I'm from the south originally so I don't tolerate cold very well.)

Finally, I liked that the veterinary school was very integrated with the campus as a whole instead of being in a remote separate location. It felt like more of a community within a community, if that makes sense.

Out of the schools that I have been admitted to so far, CSU is definitely my number one choice, but I am on the waitlist for another school that if admitted, might make me change my mind and go there. So we'll see! But I'm honestly just super stoked I was accepted 🙂

Hey! I am currently in the Vet Prep program this year. Our adviser is the Director of Admissions and this is how she explained how they choose Vet Prep candidates since interviews started. Basically, when they are reviewing applications they take everyone who filled out a disadvantage essay and choose 13 applicants who they feel would be a good fit for the program. All of them are offered interviews and then 10 of them are chosen for Vet Prep. The other 3 are on the waitlist for Vet Prep so, should one of the 10 get accepted through regular admissions or choose to decline the offer, the other 3 are offered a spot in Vet Prep. So essentially there can be up to 10 people in the program but usually they end up with a few less. This year there are 7 of us. We do get to establish residency which is a great perk plus we get a Masters along with our DVM. Hope that helps!

When I did my interview one of the tour guide/vet student said that a lot of people actually get off the waitlist bc ppl choose their in-state schools instead so I think you have a good chance. I’m declining my offer so hopefully that helps out!

Weird question, I haven't told my friends/family/coworkers that I accepted yet. If I join this group will it show up on everyone's newsfeeds or is it private?

I think you can set your preferences for the announcement to not be public on your end. (hide from timeline) but I don't know how the closed groups show up vs the not closed ones.

For those of you in the FB group, is there any main postings thus far? I am part of a group but a lot of the posts are older (before interviews were even sent out). Just checking if I'm in the right place!

I don't think we've really posted much lately. You are probably in the right place. We started the group after those of us in combined programs were accepted last year.

Hey! I'm also OOS and am deciding between WSU and CSU. I really want to go to CSU but WSU would be a lot cheaper for me since after a year I would be eligible for in-state. What made you choose CSU despite the high cost for OOS attendance?

Go to the cheaper school. Every vet I've talked to says the same thing, the less debt you have the better off and happier you will be in the long run. I only looked briefly but looks like WSU is almost half the price of CSU. Save the money. You can use it for externships or internships in places that you would maybe have to turn down if you had double the debt further down the line. I love CSU and am so excited to go but it is also my only option and financially it is going to be rough. Just my two cents 🙂

Nvm! I got word that it opens in May.
This is cutting it very close for me as my current lease in Denver ends in June so that’s when I’d be moving out to FoCo. Soooo if anyone is into the idea of finding a house and making it a vet student house, DM me!

Does this mean they are already starting to contact people on the Waitlist? I am also an OOS alternate, and just found out my little brother may be going to CSU. I haven't told my family that I wasn't accepted yet, because I'm trying to stay hopeful! But I don't know how long I can evade their questions! haha
 
Anyone know if they accept any alternates before the April 15 decision deadline or if they wait until after?

Did anyone who was accepted receive a letter in the mail? I never got one, and I'm wondering if it was sent to the wrong address or if the electronic letter is all that CSU provides
 
Does anyone know what the housing website that opens in May consists of? Is it a forum? Anybody waiting till the last minute to move to Colorado? I probably won't drive out from California until the end of July.

The housing page is basically a place where people can post listings of rentals that they have available and contact information. So it is more like Zillow than a forum. When I moved last summer I had a friends wedding in Hawaii in August so I didn't get here until like the 14th? It was totally fine.

It looks like someone on the APVMA page got called off today OOS. I think they call before emailing, so I would check your phone constantly rather than your email. Best of luck to you and the rest of the alternate applicants!!!

I received an email early this afternoon from CSU saying my application portal had been updated. When I looked, it said I had been accepted off the OOS alternate list. Even though I already put my deposit down at Iowa State, I accepted my position at CSU as it is my first choice school. I will be letting Iowa know that I am giving up my seat there. I never received a phone call.

Just a note but the acceptance letter did mention that I have until 5pm EST on the 22nd to respond to them. That means they're giving people almost 6 days to make a decision. I was quick to respond but I can see how people would take their time and that might lead to a longer wait for those still on the alternate list. So be patient and try not to lose hope!

Btw I've been a long-time lurker and this is my first post ever. I just thought this update of mine might prove useful for those still itching to hear something! Good luck everyone!
