Does it only accept students into its bachelors/MD program or can one with a bachelors traditionally be accepted straight into their medical school? anyone have stats, i cant find them

Get the MSAR...it has this info. Don't want to post the specific #'s (against TOS) but unless you're in-state, don't bother applying there.

I did. It said it does accept traditional MD applicants but the numbers displayed didn't show for it. I was wondering if it may have been lacking info (since only bachelor/MD applicants were accepted)

I go to UMKC and spend a portion of my time on here trying to answer questions about the program as not much is known about it.

The quote below is from another post, so it's not all relevant but some info in here that might be useful:

The MSAR won't tell you anything about the "MD-Only" program now simply named the "MD Program" versus the "BA/MD Program". I've been here four years and could only guess at what the average MCAT, etc. I will say that, since the school doesn't report their numbers, I think they are less worried with that magical 31 average (or whatever it is now).

Also, the school now dedicates at least ten slots to MD Program students every year. That's a recent development. In the past, the number was basically dictated by how many open slot (i.e. BA/MD students had dropped out). I've never known a class to have more than ten, but I think they are going to try and start incorporating more than ten students/year if they can.

For future searches from people who are actually interested in this program, feel free to PM me and I'll be happy to give you my thoughts on the matter as I am an MD-Only here and have no problem with shooting people straight.

As I did not do the combined program, I can't really comment on that aspect of UMKC. Especially when it comes to "comparison shopping" between different combined programs.

The school has it's strengths and weaknesses. In general, I can say I have been happy here (and, yes, I did have other options at accredited MD programs in the lower 48). Most of the anecdotes/exaggerations I have seen about UMKC on this and other sites don't even remotely come close to what I have experienced. The school is not Harvard or Yale, and it never claimed to be. What it is, is a state medical school that focuses more on clinical medicine than research (in fact, if serious research if what you are interested in, I would advise you to look elsewhere). However, I have no real desire to debate this issue with people who seem to have their own agendas (whether for or against the school) and aren't considering the school as an option.

Two more things I am more than happy to correct. I am not sure where this *****ic "the school is about to lose it's accreditation" talking point comes from. The school has been fully accredited by the LCME at every review it has had. The most recent one was from this an LCME visit from this previous October which accredited the school for 8 more years, which was just announced this week (not that anyone was sweating this. My lord, LCME accreditation is a minimal standard). Though, no doubt, the "the school is about to loose it's accreditation and the sky is falling!" talking point will persist in spite of that.

Finally, the class of 2012 had an average Step I score that was a few points over the national average and a pass rate of 95%, which again beats the national average.

According to the email I received for interview information, there are in fact ten seats. Props to Old Grunt for all the great info! 👍

This is a myth- I interviewed here, and I'm not from Kansas. A handful of people interviewing with me were also OOS. According to a current student, the MD only class was half OOS.

Just wanted to bump this thread. I interviewed on 9/6 and they told us acceptances will be mailed out mid to late October. Impatiently waiting here on my end....

Another award-winning post by flatearth 👍 do us all a favor and stop dude

Quick bump here too. I interviewed mid-Sept but I distinctly recall that they said they were going to send acceptances in late October and we should expect them in early November (by USPS only). Does anyone else have a different recollection?

I interviewed Sept 6th and they said mid to late october. That may have been the first interview day, and they could have pushed it back a little as the interviews went on. The sooner the better would be fine with me.

I interviewed on Sept 8th and from what I remember they stated that decisions will be sent by late October or early November. I'm really eager to find out...

Bumping for update. Nothing received from UMKC. Anyone else heard anything?

I emailed. A batch of letters were mailed Friday, and another batch mailed today. I live close, so I think I'll camp out at the mailbox until tomorrow.

I got my acceptance letter today in the mail. Good luck to the rest of you.

Congrats and thanks for the info before. I live about 4 hours from UMKC and haven't heard anything so I guess we can all expect to hear in a day or two then.

If you don't mind my asking, how long were you given to respond to their letter?

Nov 18th. Good Luck!

Accepted today. Deadline of Nov 18 and then they say they'll rescind to offer acceptances to those on the waitlist. If anyone here was waitlisted, I would think that a good number of you will be accepted.

How does this program work if it starts in January....does it mean that it's 3.5 years or 4.5 years? Basically if a person starts January of 2013, when will he/she graduate?

The program is 48 months. Think of it as the equivalent of 8 semesters. So if you started in January 2013, you'd graduate in January 2017

If you went straight through, you'd start in January and end in January. It seemed advisable to take a semester off to do research and/or a global health initiative and then graduate in May with the existing class.

Accepted but I will be declining, hope someone enjoys my spot.

I still haven't heard back from this school and I interviewed on Sept. 8th! I'm an out of state applicant from NY so maybe that's why I haven't received a letter back yet? Has anyone else not heard back from this school? Do you think they might have the wrong address?

Anyone have an idea?

If they mailed it on Monday, you would like to think that you should have already received something.

From meeting with the admissions staff, I don't think it would be wise to call and ask what their decision was but I would recommend that you call early next week and ask if a decision letter was sent and explain you have not received it.

I received my letter on Saturday in the East Coast, it was sent 11/02/2011. I am waitlisted. Thanks for this update! That's at least one spot open!

I found out why it took so long. My letter was sent out on October 31st and I got rejected. 🙁(( It's a total bummer. How many people are put on the waitlist generally? I know only 55 people interviewed.. I really thought I had a shot at this place. My stats are a 3.47 overall GPA and an MCAT score of 32R. I have nearly three years of being a hospital volunteer and around 90 hours of Physician shadowing. I had a standard set of ECs including leadership at college and I am fluent in Bengali and nearly so in Spanish(self-taught)....

Sorry to hear Darkskies. I know it's little consolation but their decision in no way means that you aren't a great candidate or won't be a great doctor. Admissions is a very fickle game. I myself was rejected from one of my safety schools whose average MCAT was under 28 (mine is a 33).

Also, this is a Missouri public school so some of the decision may have been, at least in part, based on your being from so far OSS.

With your stats, I think you'll definitely get in elsewhere.

Thanks for commiserating with me Dr. IBProfen. I would have hoped I could have been put on the waitlist at least but they just flat out rejected me. I had thought my second interview went very well too.. Does anyone know(or can guess) how many people are waitlisted at this school if they're planning on filling the MD-Only group with 10 people and they interviewed 55?

Does anyone know is there an official page here for MD program people?

FYI to those beginning in 2012- I was informed by a current MD only student who talked to the admissions committee that they will be admitting 20 MD only candidates this cycle. Next year they will increase it to 30, etc...

I was just notified that the class is full. Congrats to those starting next month. 👍
