DREXEL DPMS 2021-2022

Hello! That's me! 🙂 Personally, my score improved 8 points, which I'd say is a lot and was enough to help me meet that part of the contract for matriculation next year. I believe from last years DPMS class, everyone was able to pass the MCAT that was in track one (if I remember the statistic correctly, and if not, then it was pretty close to everyone). It's still too soon to say for this class because we're scheduled to take the MCAT in January so that we can get our results back in February, that way if we don't do well then we still have time to take a second MCAT and get our results back before the end of the school year. So overall, you get two shots while in DPMS to take the MCAT. I don't know for certain, but I believe maybe two or three people from this years track one class still needs to take their second MCAT/get their scores back. Most people were able to meet the MCAT requirement after the first MCAT they took in January, so ultimately we don't know what that number is for this years class right now (but I have full faith in everyone in our class nonetheless!!).

As for juggling the MCAT during the school year, it's a funny conversation. For the most part, for most people, you don't really juggle it. You start the princeton review in August at the same time DPMS's fall semester starts, but the program is so rigorous and time consuming that most people don't really pay much mind to the MCAT during the fall semester. We'd just go to the Princeton review classes for the attendance points and that was about it. Almost all of the studying for the MCAT is done during December/beginning of January before the MCAT and for most people that tends to be enough. The classes in DPMS realllllllly help with the MCAT because a lot of it translates really well. Physiology, biochemistry, and microanatomy (which are the classes in the fall for track 1) pretty much take care of the entire bio/biochem section and then some, and you pick up some good gen chem and orgo in biochemistry as well. The tests in DPMS are usually very hard in my opinion and don't always have a whole lot of time, so you learn how to answer hard questions about hard content in a short amount of time, which is basically the MCAT. For most people, that's their program - just dealing with standardized tests. Our tests in DPMS aren't standardized, but they did a good job for a lot of people to build their confidence, work on time management, and learn MCAT-related content. You learn in DPMS through practice questions, which for me, meant that I learned how to take the MCAT through practice questions and worry less about memorizing content and prep books cover to cover.

Long answer short: basically everyone in track 1 is able to meet the MCAT requirement and generally, MCAT prep occurs after the end of the fall semester which tends to be plenty of time if you do your studying right!
You've been so helpful, thank you!! It is very much appreciated.

Sorry if this is a weird question, but is there a general average acceptance rate for the DPMS program?
500-700 applicants for approximately 50 seats makes it a high end estimate of 10% and a low end estimate of 7%.

I think last year we had somewhere between 800-1000ish applicants (more applicants in previous years) and then they interviewed more people than they ever did before last year as well, and then as a consequence, accepted more students than they did in previous years as well. This year, 50 students were accepted when in previous years it was maybe like 40-45 accepted? Something like that. I'm sure something similar will happen this year! My numbers might be slightly off, but the point is that the numbers all around seem to be increasing year after year.

I have noooooo idea lol that tends to be a decision kept a little more secret than what the average DPMS student knows. For reference, I received my interview invitation for the first round of interviews on April 14th last year (which was a [edit:] TUESDAY) at 3:43 PM and the letter was sent to my "other" inbox on outlook (not my main inbox). So if I had to speculate (which could be wrong), I'd image invitations will be sent out by the end of the day tomorrow and could end up in who-knows-what inbox of yours! But again, just speculating. If tomorrow is the right date, then I wish you all the best of luck! 🙂

Oooh a Friday? Then maybe tomorrow!

EDIT: people said last year that they checked the portal and saw a "decision made" status change but no email yet, so I guess it can't hurt to check

Remember, there is a difference between accepted and matriculated. Usually, the number is a matriculated number because not everyone who gets accepted to any program will matriculate. Thats good news for those crunching the statistics! Haha

Anyone know how long the DPMS disadvantaged essay should be exactly?

Awesome thank you. Mine is around there as well. I just wasn’t sure if there was a word limit
They said do not pass the character requirement for the AMCAS personal statement for either essays. They said people have to read these, so please be sensitive!

I know that we have to be patient but it makes me really sad that this process is so ambiguous. Per their timeline, interviews shouldve been extended by march (I know they wouldnt because of previous years). I just wish that they didnt make decisions a month and a half before their program started as some of us have to move from different cities and find places to live in 🙁 hoping interviews come out this week.

Exactly. I'd be moving over to PA from Utah and that's not exactly an easy move to make with a month's notice. It just frustrates me that they haven't even sent any interview invites out and they start in late June/early July, which is earlier than Drexel's MD program that has obviously been filling their class since last summer. I don't understand the delay/wait if it's a completely separate admissions committee from the medical school (who would understandably be trying to finish up the 2020-21 cycle).

I wonder how many applicants they got this year. If last year was 800-1,000, I could only imagine it is more this year. Probably why it is taking them a longer time, and plus I assume everyone is still teleworking (which will add to the difficulty). All we can do is wait and hope for the best!

Since DPMS has conditional acceptance to med school, its the MD adcoms that review our applications and conduct interview and have the final say on who gets into the DPMS program. so it takes so long for decisions to go out because they have to do all the MD admission stuff first before the DPMS stuff.

Hi guys, just wanted to chime in since a few of you are worried about not having enough time for move-ins if decisions are made too late. DPMS traditionally require you to move to Philly by the start of the program but for the summer they will provide housing in their grad dorms. This current cohort was not required to move due to COVID and was given the option to work remotely. Don’t stress out too much about the process of looking for a place before the program starts b/c either way you’ll have the first few summer months to get settled (if you’re required to move/wants to move). You will also have a group of TAs who will help you navigate this whole process as well. For now take a breather and stay calm! I know from personal experience this waiting period is never fun.

I'm also from the southwest, it's def not easy when you don't live on the east coast , south, or midwest for that matter.

Honestly, anyone who is fussing about moving in a short time frame is acting so childish. If you get in the program, you should be so thankful. As a physician if you get a call at 3am, are you going to say “but I need to sleep” or “man I have to commute in the dark”? It’s honestly ridiculous. Also, stop with the comments about being annoyed that they are taking longer than usual to come up with decisions. WE ARE IN A PANDEMIC! They are working remote and they have families that need them during this time. Just stop complaining. Stop. Honestly, some people on here have great GPAs or great MCATs and want an easy way in. If you’re so worried about being short on time or being impatient, then apply to a different profession. This is life. People are dying every day and you are complaining for waiting an extra week. STOP. Honestly, just grow up. It’s ridiculous.

If i got the A i would be thrilled no matter when they gave that to me! Haha

Y’all, has medicine made you so cold that you’re ok with being treated poorly? If you applied for a job, and the process took 6 months to reach out to you, and then told you last minute that you got the job and had to move- any sane person would be pissed.

You have no idea what somebody’s life is at home. Maybe they need to leave because it’s an unstable environment or not a solid place to study. Maybe they’re caretakers and need to set someone up to take over their role to prepare for school. Maybe they need to save money for a plane ticket to fly to Philly to live in grad housing. Maybe they need to navigate FAFSA and they are uncomfortable doing it last minute. Maybe they have to put in a notice at work that’s longer than 2 weeks??? Maybe they have obligations that are truly none of our damn business.

This is an anonymous forum used to vent and complain and whatever else you feel like doing. You’re not childish for being frustrated about a last minute move or a tedious, lengthy process. Maybe it doesn’t matter to some of you, and that’s cool. But if it matters to someone else, what’s the point of belittling them?

And for the record, you can be thankful for an acceptance and still annoyed about the process or a last minute move.

Then if you get a last minute acceptance, deny it.

What if the individual looking at applications has a child in the hospital? Want them to miss their last moments to look at your application? It goes both ways.

Life does not revolve just around you. Everyone is going through things. But maybe if your brother was dying of cancer in the hospital and your uncle is on a ventilator with COVID, you would understand.

All I’m saying is be patient. Adaptation during COVID is crucial. Most importantly, stop complaining. I can guarantee you someone has it worse.

My mom is a professor. She has not missed one class and my brother is in the hospital with Stage 4 leukemia. I see her break down and act okay during class. I see her struggle for her students.

Maybe the timeframe is not ideal for you, but you never know what’s happening with the individual who is looking at applications.

Bold of you to assume I’ve never had a family member die from COVID. Bolder or you to assume someone may have it worse than me; how could you possibly know?

I’ll complain as I see fit. Allowing medicine to run over you without complaint is why it continues to be toxic.

Bad take to defend an institutions process more than a human beings emotions!

And here we go with someone acting like a victim.

I never assumed anything about you, so please do not try to twist my words. "Bolder or you" .... please take the time to fix your grammar. Assuming you are on the internet, someone has it worse than you. Again as mentioned in my post "you never know what someone is going through."

Have empathy not only for yourself but the individuals who are processing the applications. An institution is composed of humans, and you never know what they are going through.

Again, show empathy not only for yourself but other individuals, including staff members.

hey! was the current cohort still given the option of living in the grad dorms over the summer even though i assume many did choose to work remotely from their home town because of covid? also, is the grad dorming an option that you can pursue past the summer period? thanks!!

You’re weird as hell considering my initial post was showing empathy for classmates over the admissions process. Also, correcting grammar is elitist!

As for the Trump comment, I don’t play like that.
It seems that we are getting into an area of arguments and hostility and we should not go there. This process is stressful but we should not take it out on others in a chat forum. Unfortunately, we can not speed up the process so all we can do is try to remain as calm as possible and hopefully hear something soon. Chances are we will hear something before this month is over.

Just heard back from IMS they accepted me into the MS in biomedical sciences instead. I’m pretty sure this has been answered previously but, this acceptance should not hurt my chances of getting into DPMS right?

I agree with this. Take it from someone who has been a premed for the past 9 years, waiting a few more weeks is not that bad. This program offers a light at the end of the tunnel for a lot of people like me; who might not have done their best in all aspects for one reason or another (financial, familial, or otherwise). The frustration is definitely real especially if you went through the last AMCAS application cycle (I did). Trust the process, and know that you will reach your goal one way or another. That being said, we should not be shaming others for feeling frustrated...it is a human emotion and one you as a physician will have to deal with A LOT in the future (depending on your specialty).

I wasn't accepted into IMS. Obviously i dont know why, but it makes me nervous for DPMS. Im thinking the stats are more competitive in IMS, which i didnt technically meet, unlike DPMS...

I remember in the information sessions they had mentioned that IMS on average matriculates students with higher stats and is more competitive in that aspect but don’t let that get you down you when it comes to your dpms application! I hope you hear some good news soon!

Yeah, Im trying my best. The only reason why I applied to IMS is because they recommend choosing a second program. So i figured, why not. But you just never like hearing an R for any reason haha

so no ones gotten an interview invite yet?? lol first time checking this thread I've almost forgotten I applied to the program
correct!! 😆 you haven't missed out on anything. Also, I think we should remember that some of these people in the post will be our classmates once we start DPMS.

well this turned sour really quickly. the hostility wasn't necessary and as people going into the medical field patience and uncertainty is something that is inevitable but that does not mean you can't just express how you feel. At the end of the day, all you can do is wait. No reason to come at people, attack, or get aggressive. Let's be nice...

To add to this thread, I have a friend who received an interview invite for the Drexel MD program last week and his interview was yesterday, so the med school committee is still conducting interviews for their MD class. My friend told me the only dates available for his interview was for this week so hopefully, they're wrapping up their MD interview cycle soon and will be sending out our invites next!
