Edward Via - Auburn (VCOM-Auburn) Discussion Thread 2014 - 2015

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
There are a lot of housing options around here, however, the market really heats up during mid-winter and most places are snatched up by the end of spring. I live in a 3 bedroom 2 bathroom single family home, big front/back/side yards, 2-car garage, and in a really nice community. My lease is $1,100 a month.
Man, that is a lot cheaper than in California. I shared a garage for 450 a month in college.

JUST GOT A CALL!!!!!!

not as exciting as some of the other calls in this thread, but i have an interview invite! november 4th was the date they suggested (the earliest), and i accepted but was too excited to realize my MCAT is nov 7 so i am thinking i want to reschedule. i don't want to get all out of whack with traveling, missing work, etc right before the test. not to mention i wouldn't be able to do any practice tests on the 3rd or 4th because of the interview and traveling.

she made it sound like it wasn't a big deal to reschedule, so i'm not too worried about that.

GAHHHH SO EXCITED!!!

I'm sure they would understand if you rescheduled as not to hinder your MCAT performance. If your travel experience is anything like what mine was, it will take a few days to recover. You may be fine with the traveling, but if this is your first attempt with the MCAT, maybe reconsider. I know a guy at another med school that received a conditional offer of acceptance- that condition was a higher MCAT score. Not saying this will be the case with you, just my two cents. Congrats on the II, and best of luck on both items in your future. I interviewed Oct 16th and loved it. Eagerly waiting by the phone all day everyday.

it will be my second MCAT (first retake). that's why i don't really want to do the interview the week of my MCAT b/c of getting my entire schedule adn stuff interrupted.

thanks!!

Anyone that interviewed already have any information about Clinical rotations and etc?

Clinical sites are still a work in progress, but I have no worries especially after interviewing with the Dean and the I-Day presentations. There are sites in Alabama, neighboring states and if I'm not mistaken you can go to the VC and CC affiliated hospitals too.

Sorry I don't have more specifics, but you can check out the sites in the yearbook (I've linked it below, you'll get a hard copy on I-Day) and check their rankings/stats on Health Grades and FindTheBest. They've definitely associated themselves with quality health systems.

From memory, 3rd year is core, 4th year has one core and the rest is electives/selectives. You'll be assigned a 'Home Base' hospital which you either do rotations out of, or report back to. Every VCOM campus has the same curriculum, with variable delivery (as in potentially having certain lectures on different days). I've also linked the Academic Catalog (below), I highly recommend reading through the curriculum sections for all four years and comparing it with block schedules they have posted. Knowing the ins and outs for all four years helps a lot during interviews and almost as importantly, lunchtime chatter with staff.. hint hint.

There's a post on page 2 that has the info you're looking for. I feel that they're going to be okay with clinical rotations, even though ACOM has AMEC locked down.

Yeah, they said there are 3rd & 4th year students from other campuses already doing clinical rotations in the area surrounding Auburn to gear up the Auburn campus students in a few years. They'll have rotations at Eastern Alabama Medical Center in Opelika along with all the neighboring hospitals. I think they also said you can do rotations with any of the current sites the other campuses have agreements with. There are a lot of options.

This is true, ACOM is absorbing AMEC. AMEC was/is an extension of HCHA, ACOM is also an extension of HCHA, ACOM is the younger sibling who is getting all the older siblings cool stuff. But, ACOM will have like 324 clinical year students rotating, there's something along the lines of 1600 rotation spots in AMEC. I'd like to believe Auburn students could still apply and get some of the better rotations in AMEC, even if it's mediated by ACOM/HCHA staff.

rescheduled for 11/11

anyone else on 11/11?

it's only 3 days before my UNMC interview so it should be a good practice run (not that i don't want to go to auburn). if i had to travel for UNMC i would be slightly concerned, but UNMC is in my current city so no traveling. should be fine.

practicing interviews with a member of the UNMC ADCOM before both of these as well (most likely the weekend before)

I know that I asked a similar question, but have the majority of the previous interviewees been accepted? I know the interview group is rather small, so I'm curious if a large chunk were accepted from the first few interviews? I know that most other schools have larger groups (about 15). Thanks.

I interviewed on 10/16 and was told that about 24-28 out of 32 interviewed had been offered acceptance. I was surprised at the ratio of accepted to interviewed, but really excited for my chances based on when I interviewed.

I would assume it is because it is rather early in the cycle and they are aware that many people will be interviewing elsewhere. Either way, thank you!

Almost exactly my stats. If you have good volunteer/shadowing, just go with it! I did, and I'm IN.

thanks i have what i believe to be good volunteering and shadowing

did you have a DO letter? my DO is supposed to be working on one, going to wait until next week to ask if nothing has been submitted, it's been about a week now i think. want to make sure schools have this before they get my retake MCAT on 11/7

I would definitely have a DO letter- I know my interviewers would have questioned me if I didn't. Good luck on your MCAT!

I am scheduled on 11/11 also! Do you want to split a hotel together?

Interviewing 11/4... I am pretty excited about being in this inaugural class. I will be flying into ATL and staying with a friend who is 3rd year medical student doing rotations there. Ill be driving into Auburn the morning of the interview. Will that be feasible? I mapped it and it is only 90 minutes I guess?

3.9c/ 3.9s/ 24

where did everyone fly into? my expedia results are bringing me to montgomery which is an hour away which kind of takes airport or hotel shuttles out of the picture.....

I would leave yourself some extra time, especially when coming from Atlanta. Traffic can be great or absolutely terrible. Wouldn't want to miss an interview because of traffic or some other circumstance.

It might be safer to spend the night in Auburn prior to the interview. Is this one of your top choices?

Good advice wxman--thanks. One of my top choice OOS schools. Eager to see the offerings of the school and meet the faculty.

My in-laws live in Atlanta so I am intimately familiar with the traffic. One seemingly "minor" accident can cause a commute from hell regardless of the direction of travel. Auburn seems like it will be a great school and I really enjoyed my interview day. Very laid back!

I flew in to ATL also and I didn't have any trouble with traffic, but I drove in the afternoon. As long as there are no delays, you might be able to do that. You'll be at the mercy of the airline and everything else. My flight in was delayed 2 hours due to birds hitting the airplane. Just keep these kind of things in mind when planning your time. You want to make the best impression you can. Make sure your plans will allow you to be successful.

Still looking to split a room and or rental car if someone is interviewing on 11/11.

Remember also that there is a time change for atlanta (eastern) to auburn (central time) so that will help you out. A couple people at my interview drove from Atlanta the morning of. You shouldn't have any problems! Good luck, the whole interview day was wonderful!

I flew into ATL and took a shuttle (express 85). It was simple and arrived at my hotel on time. Good luck with your interview!

So many different options to pursue lol. This is stressful trying to spend as little as possible while still being slightly convenient

Different airports, shuttles, hotels, rental cars ugh lol

I didn't have a DO letter on interview day, only an MD. I have since produced my DO letter and sent it in, but it came after my acceptance.

Just finished the secondary, How long did you all have to wait to hear back anything? Do they send a confirmation email upon receipt?

I had a complete email by 9/11 and I received an II 9/26. Had the interview on 10/22. The school and faculty were wonderful and I couldn't be more thrilled about the prospect of being part of their first class.

Just wondering, those who have been interviewed and those accepted, what are your stats? It will be interesting to see what they are looking for in that part of the application.

when did they say the last couple of interview groups would hear back?

when did they say the last couple of interview groups would hear back?
My group (10/16) was told the next adcom meeting would be in about 2-3 weeks. So probably not until after the first of November.

My primary just got released here recently. Are my chances here pretty low because of the late app?

They mentioned in the interview that they are still expecting a lot more applications.

when did they say the last couple of interview groups would hear bapplications . they told us this week that they will meet next on Nov 5 so calls will be either that day or the next.

To all of the accepted interviewees, what parts of the tour and interview day sold you the most? Why VCOM-Auburn?

Well I haven't been accepted (yet) lol, but I can comment and say that the atmosphere during my interview was amazing... It wasn't wonderful not being able to see the building, but I know it will be nice... But I will say that not being able to view the facility is definitely a downfall and gives other schools the upper hand... Overall, what sold me (presuming I get in) were my interviewers. I clicked with them. Also, auburn is gorgeous!

did they talk much about the mission work abroad or working with auburn athletes? (those are the two aspects i'm most interested in.. specifically el salvador since i've already done two trips there and i am interested in sports med/ortho)

Were there discussions about where rotations would be? Was there going to be any clinical exposure during 1st and 2nd year? Was their curriculum or emphasis going to be different than other VCOM campuses?

i think all of that is supposed to be pretty close to the other two campuses meaning curriculum should be the same and you can rotate at some of the same spots (i could be wrong.. so wait for someone who actually knows lol)

They didn't mention where the abroad programs would be, but they did mention the football team... They basically said don't expect it because Dr. Andrews most likely wouldn't want that since his focus is the team
