This is off topic, but aren't there usually official acceptance and rejections threads in addition to the official interviews thread? Y'all are slacking this year. 😛
Isn't it still early for that?? Man time flies.

i'm getting depressed. 🙁 Rejected from Mizzou, haven't heard from UTK or Washington, and they've been sending out invites. I spent 1k on applying to schools I thought I had a decent shot at. ugh.

Hang in there html <3 UT didn't send their invites out all at once last year.

So I'm a planner. And I'm trying to come up with my backup plan if I don't get accepted this cycle. I'm set to officially graduate with my bachelors in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology in Fall 2017, but I have too many options...

I could study abroad next fall and finish my courses and graduate in the spring '18, I could get a minor in Microbiology and graduate spring '18. I could graduate in fall of 17, and then do an internship or work in the spring.... I guess I'm just not comfortable with choices- all of my life has been a series of strategically planned decisions that had already been decided for me. What would y'all do?

(And I know that I haven't heard back from a 4 vet schools that I applied to, but there's deadlines coming up so I have to have a backup plan)

TLDR; I don't know what to do if I don't get accepted this year. Too many options.

This is me, in Backup Plan Stage 1:

1.) Do file reviews at every school that offers them. I thought I had a good idea of why I was rejected from WSU last year, but there were some things that turned out to be non-issues in the eyes of the committee, and other things I hadn't considered that were much more important to them.

2.) On the school's advice, I planned to retake two pre-req classes I had earned C's in originally. I improved my GRE and approached filling out my VMCAS a little differently. I added much more LA hours and pathology (relevant to my goals).

3.) I graduated in May 2016. I took biochem this summer, and am just finishing up gen chem this semester. I worked two vet jobs until mid November (and then I quit the crazy clinic!) so now I'm only working PT at the vet school diagnostic lab. I live with my family so I'm saving a bit of money, and (after finals next week) I'll have more free time than I've ever had before. Once I'm in vet school I won't have a break like this again, and I'm so glad I have an accidental gap year. (I'm working on my fiction and poetry projects, and I'm planning some fun trips for this summer, and looking for shadowing gigs.) You could always work FT and save some money, you could be me and work PT and focus on personal interests you've neglected in school.

Backup Plan, Stage 2 would be changing careers and pursuing something non-DVM. I have a couple of ideas in mind, and I feel a little bit better with some backup paths in mind. I know I'll be okay if I don't ever become a vet.

Purdue is pretty good about that, they always do it the last day of their finals week at 3. So at least you know exactly when its released and theres no guessing haha

Is this everyone at the same time, all invites go out?

For anyone who has gotten to the point where you are considering declining (or have already declined) interviews, how did you go about deciding which ones to decline? I don't really have a set "rank" of which schools I would like to attend since I like different things about all of them. I realize I am very fortunate to be in this predicament, so I really hope this post doesn't come off as insensitive to those who are still waiting. Any advice is appreciated!
I'm kind of in the same boat. It's so hard to say no before you know if you have been accepted into at least one of your top schools. I'm waiting it out right now to see where else I get interviews. Right now I pretty much booked out for the month of January since I will be basically flying just about every other day. Most schools that I applied to that interview in January will be getting back to me by the end of this month. I am waiting to hear back from them before I decline any interviews. It's so hard to say no to a school before you go there. I feel like I learn much more about the school from talking to students on the day of my interview than on the website and that is something that makes a HUGE difference for me. I want to know the student experience. But I am really not sure what I am going to do. It's a great "problem" to have. Congratulations! You will figure it out 🙂. It's really a blessing.

Accidental gap years are the best 😍

Fudge fudgin' mother fudgin' fudgton.

Has anyone ever interviewed one day and then flown overnight to another interview the next day? UPenn interview is scheduled for the 6th and Mizzou is on the 7th at 1:30pm... I don't want to have to turn down Mizzou (too late to reschedule) because I really love that school. I also don't want to turn down UPenn. I'm OOS for both. I'm not sure which school I have a better chance at (probably Mizzou)

ADVICE PLZ. I'm lowkey panicking and I need to book my flights soon...

What time is your UPenn interview? You'd probably make it if you scheduled your flight for that night, the only factor that I'd be worried about is snow cancelling flights.

I need to plan to be there from 11:45am-4:30pm. They're doing tours and interviews the whole day... So a late night flight to Mizzou that leaves at 7-9pm? My Mizzou interview is in the afternoon at 1:30pm. Plenty of time to rest, right?

Bad news- the closest international airport is in St Louis almost an hour and a half drive, so see if you could do a regional airport!

Hmm will you be renting a car in either place? The latest flight I'm finding Philly->Columbia is at 5:50pm. The airport in Philly is 15 minutes from UPenn so that may be doable but rough if you are actually able to leave by 4:30 if not a little earlier. It's close enough that you could Uber there but it would be a stressful hour. If you're willing to rent a car, there are later flights to St. Louis. You can also take a bus from St. Louis to Columbia, I'm finding them for about $20 so that's not too bad, except you'd miss out on a lot of sleep since the hours would be awkward.

I'm looking at flights too... looks like I'm going to have to choose a school... I'd be clipping it too close to either catch my flight in philly or make it to my interview in Mizzou.

You can always take the 8pm flight out of Philadelphia which will give you plenty of time to spare, spend the night in St. Louis, then catch the 7:30am bus to Columbia which should get you there by 10am.

Did you ask Penn about rescheduling? If they're still doing things the same way they have rolling interviews so they may be able to bump you to another date.

I'm seeing some late flights from philly to STL at 7 or 8 pm so I think you could do one of those and then fly into St Louis and drive either that night for the 1.5 hr drive or stay at a hotel in STL for the night and drive the next morning to your interview since it's not until 1:30 pm.
The only directly to Columbia (with a layover) would be the 5:50 that ilikecake said, but the STL flights could be doable?

OH MY GOD. You guys are amazing! What's nice is that UPenn is literally a 20 minute drive away from the airport, so I can easily fly out of there. GENIUS. I'll try to see if I can get flights to St. Louis!

Lol, watch me get rejected from both of them anyway.

Oh is it from philly to STL? Or the reverse?

I don't know where you're coming from, but I'm flying into the Columbia airport for my Mizzou interview. It ended up being cheaper than flying to STL and taking a bus/renting a car. I'm sure you'd be able to tour Mizzou after your interview if the exact schedule doesn't work out.

I was going to fly into Como, but I couldn't find a single flight out of Philly that would accommodate. I have less than 24 hours to make it to an airport, fly to another state, make it to a hotel, rest, prepare for a second interview, and show up at said interview. There were just a lot more flights going into St. Louis than Columbus the night I'm looking to fly. I'm hoping I'll be able to tour Mizzou after my interview (I know someone at the vet school now who might be able to give me an unofficial one).

So. That weekend I'm flying from Chicago to Philadelphia, then Philadelphia to St. Louis, taking a bus from St. Louis to Columbus, and then flying from St. Louis (or Columbus) to Chicago. I shall be a dead and completely unproductive member of society that following Monday <3 .

Hello! Good luck at your interviews!!! I am a Philadelphia resident. Twenty minute drive to the airport from UPENN on a Friday may be lucky... 76 is brutal and is always jammed with traffic. However, there is a train in university city that takes you straight to the airport!! It's only a ten minute ride. I suggest looking into that before trying to drive. SEPTA - Regional Rail - Airport Line.

Ooh do you live in Chicago? That's where I am right now.

I think I saw in the Mizzou thread that they've accommodated people who have missed interviews due to weather/flights. I'm sure it'll work out!

Thanks. I thought I'd for sure get a few interview invites at least. Guess it's not over yet.

This is a truth fact. Last year, the interview team waited there until 7 or 8 at night to accommodate 1 person who got delayed for weather. They are pretty great about it overall.

I think the plan of flying into STL is your best bet!

I am sorry html, hopefully you hear good news from the other schools soon!

WZ, how many PS's did you read?? Cause I know you read mine a couple times as well!
Ummmm...lots haha I'd have to look but it was at least 6 people and a few of those I read multiple times

Edit: 10 people, multiple drafts for 3 of those!

If you ever want MMI advice, feel free to PM me! I liked them a lot because they worked well with my preference for impromptu speaking and I liked being able to switch to different interviewers. If you messed up a station, the next interviewers didn't know that, and if you did well on a station, you could ride that confidence wave through the next station!
I just found out I got an interview that is MMI, would you be willing to share advice with me as well? I've never had/seen an interview in that format and I'd love information from someone who has!

oh no. I just realized that if I don't get accepted I have to write ANOTHER personal statement. I wrote at least 18 drafts of my original one, I don't know if I can do it

Sure thing! Somebody else had asked me about MMIs after that original post so I'll probably share with you the same thing I shared with them, if that's alright. If you have more questions you can always feel free to ask!

Sending you a PM now. 🙂

I don't know if I can write a happy one anymore. "Dear sir I hope this letter finds you in good health and in a prosperous enough position to put wealth into pockets of people like me applying to school, you see, just let me in- now that'd be super cool.

You should accept me into your school because I've waited for too long to hear back from you. I'm a firm believer that it should not take 3 months to make a yes or no decision. I'm very tired. Please just let me pay your outlandish OOS tuition. Xoxo- cdoconn"

Please tell me someone got that Hamilton parody haha
