Future DVMs- C/O 2021!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
So right now we have:
VAMD- Week of 12/5- but later in the week
A&M- 12/16
Purdue- 12/16 (at 3 pm)
NCState- Sometime in later December
Miss State 12/23 (haha Miss State sounds like Mistake)
UF round 2- early January

I know Okstate OOS doesn't interview and is January...

I sound like a psycho right now- but I need more dates to add to this list!! !
The email from NC State said "by mid-December"! Or did that change?

Hello everyone!
I just wanted to hear some honest thoughts along the lines of the ones that I have been experiencing lately regarding veterinary school and possibly becoming a veterinarian. Honestly, how sure are you that this is the right path for you? I am a "sort-of" non-traditional applicant. I have worked with animals for the past 10 years in different capacities (zoos, shelters, wildlife rehab, etc) and have a BS in Zoology from 2009, but never really considered becoming a vet until this last year when I applied. I am now working in a vet clinic (a corporate one) and it is making me question everything. I am learning a lot, but I just don't know if I can see myself working in a general practice clinic as a vet. I know there are many career options for veterinarians, and many clinics to choose from so I don't want to let this one experience get me down, but it is right now. With decisions coming relatively soon, I am also stressing out about the debt from veterinary school if accepted, since I have been experiencing some doubt about this potential path. I hope this makes sense! I don't want to sound bratty or anything, just trying to be realistic. Thanks in advance for any thoughts!

I actually had to scroll back up and check the username to see if I wrote this! But I can agree with the others that the people you work with and the environment you in make ALL the difference. Only you can know if you're willing to take on the debt for this career, but the resources provided like the VIN calculator are really good (and scary, and depressing, haha).

OKState: Apparently early March for decisions and fall transcripts are due Jan 15 (according to their email today). And IS gets interview offers Jan 30

Wind chill of 28 degrees outside, 30 mph winds, and raining. There's a reason I didn't apply to any schools north of Purdue- it's freaking cold.

Ha, I was just thinking that my school list would be a little different if I were applying now instead of over the summer. It'll be 13 degrees (yes, Fahrenheit) tomorrow. I don't want to know what the windchill will be.

At least if I'm lucky enough to have multiple acceptances, I'll be deciding in March or April when winter will be fresh in my memory.

EDIT: Next Wednesday it'll be a high of 6 degrees. Whyyyyy.

Ah, yes, the cold. If there weren't that little matter of IS tuition I would definitely be looking a little more South

(I'm in Michigan aka North of Purdue)

It was 18 when I went grocery shopping last night, and I think it's colder now. But we have snow! Cold without snow sucks. I'm willing to deal with it if I get snow.

It was -3F windchill when I left for work this morning. We still haven't had real snow. 🙁 it's been "snowing" but little flakes that won't stick. Minnesnowta is failing.

I just want the cold and snow to come in so that my yard can stop being a mud pit. I let my pup out for 5 minutes and when he comes in I'm not sure what color he's supposed to be. 😛

I'll take some cold...it'll start actually getting chillier tomorrow, but lately it's been sweater weather mornings and sweatING weather afternoons :rage: it'd be fine if it never went above the 60s-70s but it shouldn't still be consistently reaching 80s in December. I don't like heat, unfortunate given where I live 😛

It's 60 degrees out but feels like 68 with the sun shining. Shirt and shorts weather. Good to see everyone's enjoying their "seasons" though 😉
Wait, this is why you have polar bears in your avatar! You're secretly jealous of our 'winter' thing.

I'm sad about spending most of December in Florida. Bleh.

Did you understand the part in the email about knowing your application status sooner the earlier you turn in your transcripts? So we can receive the decisions (interview-wise) before January 30th if we get in our transcripts ASAP? I'm confused.
Forgive me if that question was really poorly worded. I have finals brain. 😛

Poking through all of the c/o 2021 applicant threads makes me so glad that the stress of applying to vet school is behind me. I remember the constant racing heart and panic attacks I had at this time last year and I'm so grateful I'm not in that position anymore.

But also, dang, my heart goes out to all you current applicants. It's hard when you know you need to calm down but it's really difficult to do.

Anyway, hang in there you all! Take some time to get out of your heads and do something more fun than checking emails every ten seconds. 😉 Best of luck with your apps.

I refused to apply to any schools north of Purdue too. However, when I graduated from Purdue, there was 15+ inches of snow on the ground and wind chill below zero. Pretty, but oh so cold. And my dad had parked the car and when the ceremony was over we were walking around the parking garage for like 30 mins trying to find him/the car and I didn't have a coat on because I was in my cap/gown. Really, Really cold then.

Jk apparently I was right!
I remember this post from a while ago! Have you heard the Hamilton Mixtape yet? "An Open Letter" is honestly my favorite thing ever.
Sorry for the delayed response, but yesss, I listened to it at midnight the night it came out haha. It's so good! I'm obsessed with Congratulations, and yes An Open Letter is hilarious!

Geez that's insane. I couldn't deal with that. I would die.

Has anyone else not heard back from Kansas or Missouri? When will the next letters go out for denials or interviews?

Please tell me you were a December grad😱

Oops, yeah left that part out. I graduated in Dec 2013. Hard to believe it has now been three years since then!

It would have been really crazy and extreme weather in May.... lol. I might have reconsidered applying for vet school at Purdue if there was 15 inches of snow in May.😉

I was like "OMG that much snow is MAY?!!!!" And then I thought about it lol

Wow Dec 2013 grad, me too! (I got out a semester early, but decided not to alter the 2014 on my ring to help me feel less old...)
That was in Louisiana though, so definitely wasn't too cold

For anyone who has gotten to the point where you are considering declining (or have already declined) interviews, how did you go about deciding which ones to decline? I don't really have a set "rank" of which schools I would like to attend since I like different things about all of them. I realize I am very fortunate to be in this predicament, so I really hope this post doesn't come off as insensitive to those who are still waiting. Any advice is appreciated!

Tuition cost/cost of attendance would be my main factor

I'm in the same situation. I'm coming from Florida, so I am ecstatic for the invites, but I don't necessarily have the funds to get to all of these interviews. In retrospect, I probably should not have applied to all of the schools that I did, but I did not think I was going to have the option to decline some interview invites.

I applied to five schools that interview, and I've gotten four interviews so far (the last is my IS which hasn't announced yet). I'm definitely not declining anything until I get an actual acceptance (I'm also waiting on two schools that don't interview), and luckily nothing overlaps yet.

I should hear from two schools within the next four or five weeks, and luckily one is my most affordable option, and I think I'd really like it! If I get in there, I might just cancel everything else 🙂 At the very least, I'll cancel two with schools that are more expensive and that I think I'd like less.

Since you don't have a set rank, if I were you, I'd make one including tuition as the most important criterion. If you haven't looked at it already, the "Factors when picking a school" tread, which is stickied at the top of the forum, might be helpful.

Congrats on all of the interviews!! Thanks for the advice. I have a spreadsheet with all of the information I was considering in it (including tuition which is my #1 factor), so I guess I will just look into them more. I already eliminated the most expensive option.

I guess I am just having trouble because I probably won't know if I get WICHE funding until late January. So right now I don't really know how much money I will be spending for tuition. If I get funding, I already got into the cheapest school I applied to.

Yeah, agree with other posters about price. Beyond cost of attendance, I'd also consider cost of flights/travel to and from the interview.

For more personal preference things that are irrespective of cost, you might think about:
  • Class size and composition (not only in regards to what you're comfortable with, but also in regards to your relative likelihood of acceptance - interviewing for a school you only feel okay about that only accepts 10-20 OOS students may not be a great choice compared to a similar school that has more OOS positions)
  • Location
  • Academic nuances (PBL vs non-PBL, 2+2, 1 vs 2 semesters of anatomy, that sort of thing)
  • Type of interview (I love MMIs and think I would have done those over open file interviews any day)
Again, these are just some things to think about, though I still think your first and foremost consideration should be cost of attendance. But, if weeding out for price leaves you with a few conflicting schools that are very similar in cost, these might help you sort out which interview to choose as well.

I wish you could do my MMI's for me 😉 Thanks for all of the advice!!

WICHE definitely complicates things a bit! Especially because many WICHE schools are quite affordable when WICHE sponsored, but absurd if you don't get WICHE.

If you ever want MMI advice, feel free to PM me! I liked them a lot because they worked well with my preference for impromptu speaking and I liked being able to switch to different interviewers. If you messed up a station, the next interviewers didn't know that, and if you did well on a station, you could ride that confidence wave through the next station!

I definitely might take you up on that offer. Thank you 🙂

This is off topic, but aren't there usually official acceptance and rejections threads in addition to the official interviews thread? Y'all are slacking this year. 😛

Your right...someone who has been accepted already go start one!
