I 100% believe it's the culture of where I am not being a great fit/learning environment. I love what your vet said. When I worked as a zookeeper I always did my best to mentor interns with a similar mindset. I think it is difficult in the animal field to find an effective mentor, and I want to be one for others. To be honest, it's hard to be one when you can't find one of your own. That was one of the reasons I decided to apply to vet school. Thank you for your insight, that is very helpful.
I can't agree more that the culture you surround yourself with can influence your feelings of veterinary medicine. I am also a non-traditional applicant applying for Fall 2018. I've been in many situations where veterinarians told me it's a huge mistake to go to veterinary school and casted a very negative light on my career aspirations. I ended up listening to them and found an alternative career, which made me realize even more that veterinary medicine is where I want to be. I've found a new clinic to shadow at with fabulous mentors that are making me all the more excited about my decision to return to school. And from a financial perspective, I am someone with already 100k plus in student loans so I understand where you are concerned. However there are many ways to work out the debt. I don't ever expect to be well off (or really retire for that matter) as long as I'm doing something I truly enjoy. There are various avenues of veterinary medicine... Don't let one experience deter you away from something you truly want to work towards. It's all in what YOU make it. Hope this helps!
