Yes it is recognized bcoz the degree is conferred by the partner medical school. For Singapore, the IMU twinning is recognized as long as the partner school is recognized by our medical council. Which country are you from? Beware that for citizens of those countries, they are not eligible for twinning at partner schools of their country ie. if you are Australian citizen, you cannot twin with med schools in Oz. Also, be prepared for a highly demanding curriculum in IMU phase I.

Dear Jack,

Thanks for your interest in the IMU medical programme.

The IMU (MBBS) - 5 years in Malaysia is not registrable in Singapore.

The partnership programme whereby 2.5 years in Malaysia and 2-3 years
overseas is registrable in S'pore. Sometime last year the NHG came to
IMU to recruit our future doctors to work in Singapore. They recognise
the twinning programme from UK, Ireland, Australia, NZ and US. however
the Canadian degree is not recognised. We have several Singaporean
students currently studying in Singapore.

To get the latest and most accurate information on this matter, you
should contact the Singapore Medical Council.

Who is Jack? Is there a Jack in this thread?

Hi I'm Devi. Yes, you are right. The IMU-Seremban (5 yrs) is not recognized by SMC. In my cohort, there are 4 Singaporeans including myself. All of us are in the twinning program, not the one with Seremban.

Grads from IMU twinning programs who want to come back to S'pore to work have to follow a slightly different registration procedure. Check with SMC directly, or alternatively email to me to find out more.

Only 4!!!???

Hows the teaching? Are the lecturers good? Wats the timetable like? Do u get to choose ur own timetable?

jack is a fake name i give myself in australia.

i think something is wrong with the IMU system, singapore has on average more than 1000 over applicants to the NUS MBBS program and only 200 gets the slots, the rest either study something else or go australia, UK to study medicine. why do they not seek out the IMU and study MBBS with them? bear in mind singapore has a very stringent requirements on medical students and their respective school.

IMU may not be the best place to go to partly bcoz of its location in M'sia. Logistics & facilities wise, it may not be up to match with the other med schools. But bcoz of its limited resources, the students work even harder to compete for their choice of places in the partner schools & prepare for more hostile environments to come. Its a tough challenge for the Singaporeans over there, but a valuable learning experience.

Hey Kickbutt :)

I've applied to IMU -- originally a Malaysian here although I've practically studied abroad my whole life. I finished up my undergraduate at Emory down south and now I'm doing some research at Harvard; so why am I going back? Well once reason is cost (why should I be in $120,000 more in dept when I already have loans to pay back during my undergraduate years?), family and it would really be great to get to know my culture after having been gone for so long (16 years!). If I get in I have no idea which partner medical school I would like to 'twin' with -- the USA is out of the question (I hold a greencard) so I'm looking towards England & Australia.

Do you think you could elaborate on your experiences at IMU? Do you think it would be difficult for me to match back to the US for residency?

Oh, and if I do get interviewed.....how should I best prepare?

Thanks

The fact tt s'poreans aren't flocking to IMU has NOTHING to do with it not being a gd sch! Its becoz the SMC has NOT YET added it to its list of recognised schools, although it has recently been recognised. Go check out NHG's website, they're welcoming grads from IMU n PMC to apply to work wif them.

Microsoft was once a cheap share to buy, not because it was lousy, but becoz it was YOUNG. Same goes for IMU...

omni,
How's it going down south. I did BME down south too. Well, if you are looking at somewhere cheap, Baylor in Houston costs about hte same as IMU and it is one of the best med schools out there. IMU is lacking in facilities, but i think if you do come down here, you'll manage. If you have a green card, isn't it cheap if you go to a state school? I came back because i didn't have a green card and its gonna cost me an arm and a leg to go to school there.

True -- its super cheap, and also super competitive, lol. Everyone over here is trying to get into UMass -- I betchya there are even some individuals that would gladly swap their Harvard acceptance for a place where it won't cost them an arm and a leg. I've got my interview coming up in a couple days (they gave me 4 days notice!!) so I gotta start prepping for that. I would appreciate any tips for the interview process!

Thanks for the help.

The interview should be a breeze for you. Just make sure you know exactly why you want to be a doctor. lol. Not much prep involved. Good luck and see you around school sometime.

Hey -- the interview was pretty straight forward -- kind of shocked how short it was; 25-30 minutes...I guess they didn't want to burn the wire? lol.

The only question that I wasn't really prepared for was (and this is to help future applicants): Do you think physicians have done a good job?

I misintepreted the question -- should have read it along the lines of: There are many undiagnosed cases (e.g. hypertension, depression) -- are physicians doing all they can to help?

So now its just the waiting game. Any idea how long before I hear? Do they usually alert applicants via e-mail or regular mail?

Thanks -- and hope to see you on campus.
