Iowa State c/o 2023 applicants

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I will be re-applying, this is my third cycle, but I haven't given in to defeat yet!
I'm already in the process of retaking general bio, because I'm old and it's a pre-req that will be over the limit to expire for many schools for me.
Aside from that I will be finishing my thesis for my MPH which will help next cycle as well. And of course continuing with gaining experience.
This is also my third cycle. I will reapply for s fourth time if not accepted! I’m always taking additional classes, retaking classes, and have two jobs at vet clinics.

Im hoping that I dont have to because at this point I cannot afford to work as a tech. I need to make enough cash to pay decent rent and utilities. I would still try to get weekend hours if possible 🙁

This is also my third time applying, second time to Iowa state. I did my masters there and fell in love with the cvm. Hopefully we hear some good news in two weeks!

I just finished my masters at UF but ISU is probably one of my top choices.

I’m under the impression that we get our admissions decision through us mail and that we all get results on the same date in the middle of February. So all will arrive on the certain date??

You’ll find out on the portal first. If accepted, then theyll probably call and then you’ll get something in the mail. But everyone finds out their status at the same time.

I think phone calls are reserved for scholarship offers and when they finally start to accept people off the waitlist, since they want a timely answer for those. For the initial Feb 15th deadline, you get a portal notification followed by a snail mail offer of acceptance, you have plenty of time to decide whether you want to keep your spot. And then you don't really hear much until after graduation, which is when you can start ordering books, getting your ID, signing up for rabies vaccines, etc.

Hi! ISU CVM Ambassador here 🙂 You'll get a notification via your portal/email on the 15th, and then those accepted will receive a call a week or so after that from the admissions office to extend their congratulations and address any questions accepted applicants may have. Best of luck to everyone, I hope that each and every one of you get to join the ISU family!

Thank you! Could I ask you why you chose Iowa State/what is your favorite thing about the school?

Absolutely! I'm a 1st year and OOS (AZ). I chose Iowa primarily for the large animal caseload and the opportunity to receive scholarships throughout my education. I'm interested in pursuing a career in large animal/equine medicine and have thought about specializing someday, so having the opportunity to see a greater number of cases during my clinical year was very appealing. Additionally, ISU is America's first veterinary school (est. 1879), and this has helped them establish a really good scholarship fund. Typically only a handful of students receive first-year scholarships, but many of the upperclassmen I know have been able to cut their debt pretty substantially with scholarships. And they're not only academics based! Many are given based upon your experiences, socioeconomic background, home state, etc. This long history also means that ISU has one of the nation's largest alumni bases which can help with externship, internship, and job placement in the future.

After being here for a little over a semester I can honestly say it is the best choice I've ever made. Our teachers are incredible, the community is extremely supportive, and there are so many opportunities to get experience. Like I mentioned, I'm a first year and this weekend I got to observe and assist during a colic surgery! They don't hand you opportunities but if you go looking for them clinicians will be happy to have you tag along. Additionally, if you want to work to get a little money on the side, there are a great deal of jobs specifically for students all around the school with very flexible hours. Some may be in the library, bookstore, etc. but many are in the teaching hospital such as my job as a technician in the Equine ICU.

Anyways, sorry for the long-winded response, I just have so many good things to say about Iowa State! If you have any more specific questions please let me know 🙂

I’m sitting at the last 45 gpa but below the science gpa based on last year’s stats. I feel like all of this stress has taken 10 years off my life expectancy. I just want all of us to get in!

Same im sitting at or above the science but 3.5 instead of 3.6 for last 45.

Remember that they're not just looking at your numbers! Whether you're above or below previous class stats, your fate isn't sealed based on your numbers. They are looking just as much at your experiences and your essays. They're looking for people who they believe will be a good fit at the school, not just someone who is at or above their averages.

Thanks @sheltermed , I second this!

I used to wish being above the stats got you in. I'm above most schools stats but was turned down without an interview last year from my IS. Things are looking better with other schools this time. I have a lot of experience 1000+ research, 2000+ small animal vet, 200+ food animal vet, 200+ zoo vet, 2000+ zoo animal, 800+ farm animal, 2000+ customer service. But I have always had a hard time with writing. So, even though I had numerous people go over my essays you never know what each school is looking for.

The best advice I've gotten is, be yourself in your writing and your interviews. You want a school to select you for who you are. If you are rejected for your essays or your interview than that class at that school that year was not a good fit. You want to be in a class and a school that is the best fit for you. I had visited my IS school many times and thought it was a good fit but after going through the interview process with them this year I realized I was lucky I didn't get in their last year, it's program isn't what I'm looking for. I have found what I think are good fits at other schools, I just now have to wait and see if they think I'm a good fit. I have faith that I will end up in the vet school that is best for me.

My issue is somewhat this. I have a lot of hours 3500 plus in vet and animal ( not owned animal) plus research/extension. I am frustrated because I feel like im putting my life on hold for applying .

I can see February 15th in my 10 Day forecast now. I hear February 15th in the news (potential government shutdown date). I feel February 15th when my heart beats fast. I'm just glad I can't smell or taste the date. I think at that point, I'm tripping from anxiety and should see a medical professional.

Does anyone know how many OSS acceptances Iowa sends out and how long the waitlist is?
From what I heard they go through a huge amount of waitlist.

Theres like 75 non Iowa/nebraska spots theres 54-56 is and 26-27 nebraska, the rest of the 157-158ish is OOS.

This year we have 27 from Nebraska who go to UNL for the first two years and then join us for the last two, and then we 58 Iowa residents so we have 72 that are OOS/not Nebraska. It probably depends on the year though because once acceptances go out they combine IS and OOS students for the waitlist and just pull of the one waitlist.

This explains things but does not explain the two cycles they took a huge amount from Connecticut :joyful:

They used to have contract seats with the state of CT but sense CT is economically failing the state has pulled its funding to provide instate tuition for its students at ISU, so they are now paying out of state tuition again.

CT resident hereyeah a lot of CT residents apply because UCONN still hasn’t updated their website so it still says we have contract seats...I had to do a lot of digging to actually find out they were cut from the budget

When I was a freshman at UConn they had that program, wish we still did lol

Yo complain to your school and tell them to update the website. They likely don’t realize it’s out of date

Yes 157-8 seats total and a certain amount is IS/nebraska
Have they increased class size again? They used to aim for around 145-150 total students. Before that it was 120.

But you're right about ISU going through a lot of their waitlist historically. They accept so many OOS, and lots of those get IS offers that they accept instead. Or bigger scholarships elsewhere. Or silly people who want to take out a larger amount of loans just so they don't have to endure the polar vortex in Iowa. After these past two weeks, I might agree with that logic.

Im from Florida and I've never seen snow before..trust me if ISU accepted me I'd endure another iceage to go to vet school.

We have just under 150 students

My class incoming was 155. Things happen and we are currently sitting at 151 between students dropping down a class or transferring. I know the current first year class was larger than ours when they started. They are still sitting at 156 according to their class list.

Hi. Regarding financial aid, what have you guys heard? I have always heard that you are given a loan amount and can pull out as much as you want from your awarded amount. After the webinar last night, I was confused how they mentioned that Aid would only cover cost of tuition and not housing? Can someone help me understand this please because I absolutely don’t plan on working during get school to focus well. If admitted, I would be OUT OF STATE. So moving and getting a place would need to come from my loans. So until I get instate my loans would be higher.

It works just like regular undergrad loans. They award what they deem you need for tuition etc. based on your FAFSA. I was out of state my first semester and I did end up paying in plus then having to pay for housing out of pocket. You're always able to take out private loans if needed to cover the difference. Below is what my bill looked like before 1st semester started. Loans weren't put in for whatever reason but they totaled $23534. upload_2019-2-7_12-24-35.png
