Iowa State c/o 2024

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Do they give you a placement number on the waitlist or is your place not known? Was that for oos, is or both?

1. Does anyone know how many applications they got this year? Edit: found the answer on thread
2. Do they have any sort of accepted students day once statuses come out?

apparently they went to like over 100 on waitlist last year?
I can’t speak for last year but two years ago they definitely did. I was over 100 on the waitlist and was accepted

They do give you a number when they put you on the waitlist! I was given a number two years ago as OOS and my friend was given a number last year as IS

The bulk of the waitlist movement occurs after April 15th, and that’s when your numerical position will be released on the portal if you are waitlisted. No personal experience with the waitlist, myself, so don’t quote me on this... but if you’re very high up, you might get called earlier, though I wouldn’t count on it. Some people are removed and receive an acceptance well into the summer and even in the weeks leading up to classes starting.

Yes, ISU has historically gone quite far (easily 100+) into the waitlist. So don’t lose hope if that’s how the chips fall for you when decisions go out next month!

Current first year, I got accepted on Feb 15 but a lot of my classmates were on the waitlist. The waitlist moved a lot between April and May, and then slowed down a bit. In past years, their waitlist has gone through at least 150 people I believe.

If anyone has any questions regarding what its like being a first year at ISU feel free to PM me.

Rooting for all you class of 2024! Go Cyclones!

They will have 2 visit days for accepted and waitlisted students. March 28th and April 4th are the days that us tour guides have been told to expect everyone here.

It’s not uncommon to hear that people have applied more than once in a row trying to get into vet school. Do a significant amount of people get accepted on their first try?
also, do they contact people from your application?

Ok don’t panic but they started uploading the class of 2024 info packets to the vet med website This could be OUR infortmation.

But they don’t know who will accept their offer? This seems strange
It’s just the packets on the website. Not personalized. It’s the schedule of events, computer and book info, and other pieces of info updated to class of 2024. I assume they’re prepping it for when decisions go out in two weeks. I’m just excited for any progress lol

Not sure if this has been asked before, but I’ve seen in previous years ISU’s science GPA averages around a 3.5-3.6. If ours is below this but our app is still in committee review, should I even get my hopes up? :/

Averages are averages. Some students will have a 4.0 others around 3.0. No need to worry if you’re at the lower region. Keep your hopes up until decisions are made!

Does anyone know approximately how many applicants they are still looking at? Or how many people were rejected with the first wave they did?
The first wave of rejections are the people who didn’t meet minimum cutoffs. The number probably varies by year, but it’s not going to be a large percentage of applicants. Most people still have to wait until the February deadline.

T-10 days guys!!
I can’t wait to see who the class of 2024 will be! I’m one of the student ambassadors for the school and will be there during accepted student days! Please reach out for questions about the school, Ames, Iowa in general.

I also am from Los Angeles, so if anyone has any questions of the move I’ll be more than happy to answer!

I’m SO interested in the fact that they don’t do interviews. It’ll be cool just to see if my stats alone are enough to get in or not! I hope everyone gets the news they want! 🙂

10 days until we hear back? Won't that be on a weekend?

One more week guys!!!
Seems longer why does time move so slowly?!

Also, anyone who's toured the ISU, any opinions on facilities, academia, etc? And if you have also toured Ohio State, WSU, or U of Minnesota - any comparisons would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!

Current vm1 at Iowa state! If anyone has any questions or needs help let me know!
I actually have quite a few but here is a smaller list of questions 🙂
1) when does hands on experience begin? I know some universities start year 1 and that is extremely attractive to me!
2) Do you guys use lecture capture for all classes?
3) Are there any study abroad opportunities?

Hope this isn't too much haha. thanks!!

I know the answer to #2 is yes. I just finished my master’s degree in the vet school & every lecture was recorded & usually professors wear microphones so they can be easily heard throughout the whole lecture hall.

1) Hands on experience begins year 1 with clinical skills.
2) Lecture capture is done for all of our classes but professors have discretion on if they are released to everyone and the length of time they are available. Most professors leave them up the whole semester but certain ones/discussions aren't posted.
3) There are some study abroad opportunities.

Sorry if it's already been asked, but does ISU use email or snail mail for acceptances/rejections?

Looks like a couple others already got to your questions, but just to expand on #3, there's an entire section of the ISU-CVM website dedicated to the study abroad stuff: International Programs/Study Abroad | Iowa State University

What's your area of interest? Is there something in particular you're wondering about?

Both small and large animal hospitals are fairly new. They are attached to the academic building, which is both a blessing and a curse because you don't really have to leave the vet school complex for anything. There are three main lecture hall classrooms that you spend most of your time in for years 1-3, with smaller rooms for lab sections. There are opportunities to spend more time in the hospitals through clubs or jobs if you want to. I know they recently redid their cafe space in the academic building to make it roomier and provide more study space, but I'm not a student anymore so I haven't seen it.

the cafe is pretty nice. I loved studying here when i did my master’s degree because it’s completely surrounded by windows so it’s by far the brightest spot in the vet school (compared to the library which has like 3 windows🙁). Lunch time can be kinda hectic as I think all classes have lunch at the same time. It can be sometimes hard to find somewhere to sit if you don’t get there early. The cafe itself is really good, well priced with a great selection of food and drinks.

I left ISU before the new café was completed, so it's nice to hear that it's bright and that there are a good number of windows. The lack of natural lighting was actually one of my big complaints about the vet school; the whole place felt darker and more somber compared to a lot of other vet schools I'd interviewed at/visited.

Oh I misunderstood I thought it meant you would hear at least by that date. Thank you for clarifying that for me! Now I won't be checking my email like a crazy person. Best of luck to everyone!
So we’ll get an email with the decision on Friday?
